PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about October 16 and will be available for
about 1 year. I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as possible
thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 8 songs, one each from a brand new
recording. I spin the music and give you the backstory of each artist.

_____

PROGRAMMING UPDATE: On the way to RCB HQ is a concept album that I’m very interested in for you to hear. According to the radio promoters it’s getting coverage from ABC News and The Huffington Post
“This new project features songs inspired by, or using the prose as lyrics for one of Kerouac’s darkest works,Tristessa, about a morphine-addicted prostitute with whom Kerouac falls in love.”

“Esperanza: Songs From Jack Kerouac’s ‘Tristessa’ features a select group of critically acclaimed indie rock artists including:William Fitzsimmons, Gregory Alan Isakov, Peter Bradley Adams, Alela Diane,Wintersleep, Marissa Nadler, Joshua James, Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth), Hey Rosetta!, Willy Mason, Matt Costa, The Low Anthem, and Tony Dekker (of The Great Lake Swimmers). “

Folks, as a devoted Kerouac aficianado, I can’t wait to unveil this album for my ears and yours. I’ve just requested a disc today. If it arrives by Tuesday, it will be part of the programming for the next show. If that’s the case, I will announce on my RCB Facebook page first. When it does debut I will likely air 2 or 3 tracks a week and retell the story of Tristessa. I have portions of the book myself from The Jack Kerouac Compendium, published by Penguin.

_____

Let’s start here with the rewind of the 10/9/13 podcasts:

RCB Novus Ordo: Iron Bridge Band starts us off with a wonderfully recorded song called “Petticoat Road”. You’ll definitely hear much more from this band. Yarn we’ve certainly much of in the last year and they resurface with their 2nd album. John Oates (yes, that John Oates) is featured vocalist on 2 songs, one of which I’ve included here. Lydia Warren brings about rock and blues, much like Wanda Jackson and Rosie Flores do. Spectral Lines are a new New-Wave/post-punk duo act, with both members well experienced in the Philly music scene. They made their very debut this week at The Fire, in Philly.

RCB proper: Having spun De Stijl’s tune with Peter Hook at the lead, and then airing Spectral Lines’ tune on RCB Novus Ordo, I was thoroughly nolstalgic for New Order and related sounds. I spun one tune for an intro, that’s the timeless “Crystal”. Hearing the album Get Ready on Spotify, I must also give credence to “60 Miles An Hour”, the other great song from a solid 2001 album. Second airing of Lara Ewen’s new album begins Segment 1, followed by the newest album from renowed songwriter Suzie Brown. Segment 2 includes music from Swedish rock band The Plastic Pals, and Baltimore’s The Last Year, itself the newest rock project from Niki Barr. Segment 3: More new material from Sara Petite and Krista Baroni start the mix here. Segment 4; Dan & Faith, and Beth DeSombre are part of a Rhode Island Songwriters Association ‘in the round’, in the big city of Providence, 10/13.

_____
Big change this week, as my temp job ended very suddenly and I’m up against it again. I might be OK this month, tho still one month behind in paying rent. If it gets to 2 months in November, I surely will face eviction proceedings. I intend to build income in some way, preferably with a job similar to the one I did in the last few weeks.
Of course your donations will help make a difference. You can do so via the Paypal link at the home page.
I’ve again cancelled my social calendar, meaning that I won’t be attending live events until I’m more financially stable.
_______

While I was still working, I planned to and did attend an event at The Fire, a notable music venue in the Fishtown section of Philly. My full review, plus pics from the new camera I bought are at https://radiocrystalblue.net/2013/10/11/the-fire-10813/

I didn’t take the time to edit the pics further at the time of releasing the gallery but that misstep was only done in haste of getting them out to you. The next ones I do will be properly edited.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about March 14 and will be available for
about 4 months beyond. Owing to schedule demands, I usually aim for noon
Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter.
You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground
songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each
artist.
CD FOCUS:Little Blue Egg by Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. This is a disc
with 11 long-lost recordings found by Tracy 2 years ago,
I will spin 2 tracks from this compilation. www.redhouserecords.com
www.tracygrammer.com
**********************************************************************************
Sorry for the lateness in sending this one out. Sporadic Web access today.

I want Radio Crystal Blue to be your go-to radio source for
indie/underground/DIY talent, as I give you not just music but news and info
about each artist; where the ey play next, what they’re planning to record,
projects, and much more. Why follow the 3- and 4-letter radio stations
with their limited selection of artists and more limited song choices?
With Radio Crystal Blue you’ll get the artistic value that many fail to pick
up on in radio.

I never like to give you info about just what you’ll hear on the next show
but I’ll tease this much: Considering that SXSW is next week, you’re likely
to hear music from artists who are performing on official (and non-official)
SX events.
Also, as it’s the middle of March, there’s a certain theme that I begin my
show with. Longtime listeners will know just what this is. For those who
don’t, keep tuned in!

Solar flare (and lunar activity) have me physically edgy, tho I’m now
recovering. Computer, not so much. I’m geared more to getting holistic
health and related practices done for myself as well as for others.
**************************************************************
I promised I’d deliver on some further thoughts on genres and slots of
artists that are often taken quite generally. Here are 3 that seem to be
intertwined at times. So let’s start the untwining with…
INDIE…as in ‘independent’. Indie is anything that has the backing of an
indie label, or otherwise is more of a DIY approach. Indie types might have
their own vanity label and studio.
ALTERNATIVE: Alternative to what? Alternative to the majors, Billboard, and
the like. That’s about it, really. There’s no ‘alt’ sound, just the level
of exposure that’s given. An artist can be both indie and alternative but
once one flirts with a major or is on the charts, there goes the alternative
cred.
UNDERGROUND firmly suggests what you think it is..bands and songwriters who
are generally unsigned, performing in venues that don’t advertise very much
and generally doesn’t have the name recognition as their alternative peers,
much less your true household-name types.
*************************************************
TWITTER FIVE TO FOLLOW will return with 10 next week. Persistent Web issues
are preventing my computer to access Twitter. It’s been out all of Friday.
*****************************************************
COVERAGE:
I do audio interviews, photos, video, and audio of live events. You can see
and hear evidence across my Facebook and YouTube channels, plus the field
recording FeedPlayer.Time, location and expense will be taken into account
before taking on a job.
Next show I’m attending is on 3/10 at The El Bar in the Fishtown section of
Philly. I don’t know any of the bands except that it’s mainly a rock/punk
kind of night. Plus they have a neat take on happy hour. And it’s really off
the grid. Just my style. Sometimes, you have to get off the grid.
********************************************************************
RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.
On RCB Novus Ordo: Enjoyed the ‘campire-folkpunk’ of The Heart Pills.
Octopus Jones is a NC band that played a local open mic (after having a
venue cancel on them that very evening). They absolutely bring the rock n’
roll. Food Will Win The War I’ve been a fan of for years, with a great
sensibility to their sound. I had seen them last summer at a First Friday
event.

RCB proper: Segment started with songs referencing some sort of anger; the
second half of the segment were more reactive. Opening songs from Fortch and
Deni Bonet are rather similar in its pop-rock approach. As we get closer to
SXSW, I spun music of artists who are performing events there. One
unofficial event is Brooklyn Country Cookout, helmed by mombers of The
Defibulators. The Sweetback Sisters tune I spun is a throwback Western swing
tune. Alana Amram & The Rough Gems make theri RC debut here from their 2010
album Painted Lady. “Cream Sherry” is an absolute delight of a song.
Segueing from Andy Friedman’s tune about church, I spun one from Brother
Joscephus and The Love Revival Revolution Orchestra. Then a brand new one
from the mighty Demetra, plus similar rock sounds from Niki Barr and
Wormburner. Segment 3 was more folk oriented. Notice the ‘tree’ references
in lyrics (Mark Erelli, Gina Holsopple, Screen Door Porch, and a brand new
tune from the medieval folk of Sarah McQuaid). Segment 4 starts with the
delightful “Veselka” by Greta Gertler & The Extroverts. She shared a gig
with Noam Weinstein here in Philly on 3/7. Anders Holst and Eleanor Fye with
grown-up love songs. Then a Michael G. Rondstadt composition by Lisa Biales
off 2010’s “Closet Hippie” album.
