PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about February 3 and will be available for
about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I record,
you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older shows. Owing
to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as
possiblethereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 10 (ten) songs, one each
from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you some backstory of
each.

LIVE EVENT COVERAGE: I’m planning to cover 1 or 2 events a month in Philly.I
do writeups of shows on my website, and share most photos on Facebook, plus
video on YouTube.
*****************************
INTERVIEW: I interviewed electronic-rock artist Alex Kelly on Skype this week. This 25-minute interview covered the gamut about her recent tours, her approach to music, the making of her exquisite video “Catalyst” and more Hear the interview in my Field Recording FeedPlayer at www.bigcontact.com/radiocrystalbluefield which has share/stream/download options. It’s also linked at the home and archive pages of my website.

Celebrated birthday #43 (yes I count them all) pretty quietly. 400 of you sent me nice messages on Facebook and just a few on Twitter did likewise. Thanks so much. I don’t exactly know what my year ahead will be like. I recall making goals at this time of the year and seeing many of the smaller ones come to pass. This year ahead, I want to build some income streams, and somehow find a way to get all the bills and debts paid. This may prove to be my most challenging year.
Also continuing to have slight stomach issues, enough to keep me from committing to some things. A few folks have extolled the virtues of aloe vera juice….What is also helping is regularly meeting and meditating with a marvelous New Age-ish group in Fishtown every month for 2 years.I’ve signed a 1-year lease to stay in my place in Philly. I honestly don’t know if I’ll make it through the 1 year but my intuition feels this is where I am to be. I do not have an exit strategy in the event something happens.

Assuming my health and finances are in great shape by mid-March, I might go to a certain conference/festival that March. As my friend Elaine Silver says, “Nothing is certain until the check is cashed”…so nothing to be said until I’m absolutely sure.
SHORTY AWARDS:The Shorty Awards honor the best of short-form content across
many expressions. This is the 5th annual awards. See who else have won in
years past here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorty_Awards You can vote for
me to win the acclaimed Shorty Award in the area of podcasting. Just surf
to www.shortyawards.com/radiocblue then tick the dropdown area to select the
category ‘podcaster’ (‘music’ is the default; this should be changed!).RCB REVIEW (the annotated version):
RCB Novus Ordo: About is a band with 4 EPs being released over the course of 1 year, each one representing the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism. Flowerland’s EP is a re-release from the early 90s. Peaches & Crime presents neo-vaudeville-like sounds. Steven Graves returns with a new inspirational album.
RCB proper: Garrison Starr kicks off Segment 1. Don Gallardo has Neilson Hubbard in tow on “One Of These Days” on his new album. Neilson has worked with Garrison on multiple albums. A bit countrified this first segment was. Among the 2 new music samplers: Say hello to Ethan Farmer, a virtuoso on bass, who recently has toured with Lionel Richie on his Tuskegee Tour. Tip of the iceberg, folks. Motion Pictures with a fun pop rock song. Renowned sister act Moore & Moore give us some classic country. Brian Rogers Band with a catchy rock song here also. Segment 2: Aqua Cherry with the interesting rhythms on their song “Ripoff”. Wormburner’s “Peekskill” is another great road song, set during winter. I concluded a seven week long focus on the music of The 1861 Project. Segment 3: Rebecca Loebe & Raina Rose have played a monthly residency at the venerable Threadgill’s in Austin. Songs for the sad and downtrodden in this segment, notably from Evangenitals. Final segment includes an ode to Janis Joplin and a couple of political songs. Now that you’ve read about it, give it a listen!

Camera is back, all shiny and new, and totally worth the $32 plus round-trip bus to get to NYC and back. Yes, I trudged to Union Square, did a fair amount of walking, and caught my NYC stride without missing a beat. I put said camera to good use on 10/16 seeing 2 bands at The Grape Room. RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Kicking off this edition is music from Tora (Fisher), with a most unique
view on songwriting from the heart. We Are The Woods resurfaces with a slightly different lineup but continues blazing musical trails. Marci Geller is a Long Island NY artist with Vance Gilbert doing backing vocals on the song I spun “No Weather Down”

RCB proper: Even before programming this week’s show I knew that it would be full with music by artists who are participating at FAR-West this week…the Western states region of Folk Alliance International. Included within 2 segments worth is new music by Nels Andrews (in the same company of friends like AJ Roach, Raina Rose, et al.), and more new songs by Severin Browne and Chico Schwall. Severin’s tune “To The Light” has co-writing credit with veteran bassist/songwriter Freebo, also part of this special pair of segments. The K’s are breaking up, and for certain. I had followed their career since they began their initial radio campaign in 2005 and it was back in 2006 I had first given airplay to the first of their three albums. I will miss them. There was death and some elements of doom and gloom that came through the lyrics. Some of it happened in real life to them as well. That’s why I spun the songs I chose this week. From the standard segments: Tania & The Revolutionaries will release a new EP soon. Jeneen Terrana & Amateur Blonde share a bill 10/19 in NYC, part of the big CMJ experience. Hudson K & Avi Wisnia likewise with a CMJ show. Gave you some blues/rockabilly in my 2nd proper segment (Brother Joscephus, Vintage Blue, Voodoo Swing, Zac Mac Band). Patti DeRosa shares bills in the next month with Daphne Lee Martin & Beth DeSombre. I had built a whole segment around Rebecca Loebe, who also releases new material. She shares a bill on 10/20 wtih Curtis Becraft and Fred Gillen Jr, and later into November with Jesse Terry and Sarah Blacker (the latter two with new music). Final segment includes new music from Beaucoup Blue (who I saw earlier in October).Honor Finnegan and Anna Dagmar share billing on 11/3. This segment also has songs that feature danger, hope, longing for ease.

RCB REVIEW:

RCB Novus Ordo: David Leinweber returns to my airwaves with his latest acoustic album. Award-winning songwriter Lee Feldman is present here with his 4th album. Kati Mac, whom I had interviewed maybe 5 years ago, returns with her latest. You can hear Rob Morsberger on piano and backing vox on “Highway 100”. Rob himself is releasing 2 new albums very shortly and is fighting cancer.I had last met him about 10 years ago supporting Jon Herington.RCB proper: In mid-August I always start with The Velvet Underground’s “The Gift”. Out of this tragicomic piece I always seem to take different directions. This year, having absorbed some history on Serge Gainsbourg, I spun the opener to his 1971 concept album re Melody Nelson. From that lovely pastiche of symphonic rock and spoken word (aha), we go to the spoken word intro and the psychedelics of The Small Faces, then some early Eno, and then the Madchester scene circa 1991 with a long danceable jam from Saint Etienne. Segment 1 following: Two NYC songwriters beginning this one (Bryan Dunn, John Brodeur), then some soft songs through the rest of this segment. Segment 2 begins with MJ Hibbett & The Validators’ concept album Dinosaur Planet. Followed up with live songs by The StereoFidelics and Sirsy. This weekend starts the first ever Liberty Music Festival, centered around The Legendary Dobbs here in Philly, with 74 artists performing. I spun 5 of those artists in one dedicated segment. My favorites are the ones from Venice Sunlight and The Way Home, both with classic pop-rock leanings. Late Cambrian is heard once again here with a great electronic-fueled song that should be in the clubs. All three with songs that remain in my head for days. Beyond this, spun another from The Timid Roosevelts, who are just about to release their new CD. Segment 4: Greg Klyma shares billing with Danielle Miraglia at The Burren in Somerville, MA. You can hear Greg back up Danielle on “See The Light” which I spun following Greg’s tune. Greg, along with Kate Klim and Meg Braun, perform at the upcoming Cutting Edge Of The Campire Festival at Passim, in Cambridge MA. Of course, I spin Meg’s tune “August” here. On the same weekend as the festival in Cambridge is the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival, as I spun music by 4 artists who are part of the lineup (Cary Cooper, Raina Rose, Anna Dagmar, Brother Sun). Closed with Heather Pierson’s summer romance song, plus a Philly subway romance song by Vance Gilbert, and an instrumental from Bolton MA’s Dan & Faith.
