NEXT SHOW will be published on or about November 7 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
For this and the next several weeks I am bfeaturing a Nanci Griffith tribute
album
released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The
Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from
artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also
contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album
benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at:

First things: I’m OK. My home is OK. South Philly is way OK. If you followed my tracks on Facebook, I did indeed check into one of the 3 Red Cross emergency temporary shelters, as I had some concern about how things would hold up. Fortunately the place is not in a flood zone, no trees to be felled, very little property damage outside. Electricity stayed on as well as the VoIP phone and Web service. I had done an experiment on the spiritual level and shared this with Facebook friends. I’d like to think that this work helped turn the weather a bit and protect. I do believe in this power and believe it to be real. I have nothing but sympathy and love and good vibes to send to my friends and brethren all across the NY/NJ/PA/ area who have lost electricity and other power along with means of communication and transportation. We will all rise from this again.

This weekend sees me cover 2 live events, plus handicapping the big Breeders Cup weekend.I’ll be posting on my stat blog about that experience. I’m also finishing up a video production course next week, with an exam to follow.

There are a LOT of CDs coming in, so there’s no lack of talent that I’m debuting on a weekly basis. At some point in December I’m attempting to get more new artists directly in rotation, in order to save the long wait for debuting on RCB Novus Ordo. For real, most material coming in now are likely to debut in January. That is how busy it’s been here. If you or an artists you know or represent has already submitted music to me, be sure I’m on that artist’s non-regionalized email list.
OCTOBER STATS in brief: Set a new one-day access record during the month on 10/20. A number of people had caught link to the video that I shot of The City And Horses, at Milkboy Philly. My review of The Grape Room event from 10/16 also caught a lot of eyeballs. Also high on the list is the Ortlieb’s Lounge show review from 10/22. Canada, UK and Italy are showing the most love outside the US.
Thanks to these website for showing love online:

COVERAGE:
I do audio interviews along with photos, video, and audio of live events.
You can see and hear evidence across my Facebook and YouTube channels, plus
the field recording FeedPlayer.Time, location and expense will be taken into
account before taking on a job. I’ve done this work for free, but that may
change soon. Also, with the video skills I’m learning, I might do more
video oriented work in the future.

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: The Kennedys are back! They’ve just released a new album, with all of Pete’s guitar wizardry and Maura’s vocal and songwriting craft. Starring, on the Northern Spy label, are one of the leading lights in Brooklyn NY’s underground music scene via their brand of psychedelia-tinged rock. Gathering Time are a bit of a throwback to the folk groups of the 60’s and 70’s.

RCB proper: About the oldest traditions of this show’s history is to do a Halloween (OK, OK, end-of-October holiday) show…and there are many songs that are relevant to the holiday. So I lit some white sage, let the smoke linger, and recited Poe’s “Alone”, and the next voice you hear is William Dafoe, reciting “The Raven” which is on Lou Reed’s concept album based around the poem. Ramones? Of course. Always a staple to me for the holiday. I chose indie songs to add to similar holiday classics. Great punk from Chicago’s Voice Of Addiction, and Las Vegas’s The Gashers. New music from Margo Rey (client of Miles High Productions), Achilles Wheel, Wes Tucker & The Skillets, Schwervon! across different segments. Great segue also with Heather Styka & Devon Sproule, singing songs recalling childhood and bodies of water. Love and such dominates one whole segment, and we hear another new tune by Marci Geller there. Shane Cooley’s tune “Last Love” has an awesome guitar hook. The Nanci Griffith tribute album is amazing. I love Eric Brace & Last Train Home’s version of “I Wish It Would Rain”. Been in my head for days. Listen for me doing my best falsetto as I recall Bowie. This is why reading the words doesn’t compare to hearing the show.

RCB REVIEW: RCB Novus Ordo:
Arlan Feiles with a long-awaited return to these airwaves, with a new band (The Broken Hearted) in tow, still with his own spin on Americana. Two bands heard in this show sharing a drummer, both with rather idiosyncratic indie rock; these bands are Generator Ohm and EndAnd.
RCB proper: One evening in late summer 2002 (2003?) I was at NYC’s The C-Note for an evening of poetry, curated by David Amram and Casey Cyr. David Wallechinsky and Ron Whitehead were some of the performers along with the aforementioned. It was a night I will never forget, as it opened my eyes to this expression of art, and eventually led me to appreciate the works of the Beat poets, mainly Kerouac and Ginsberg, even more. For the majority of the years I’ve done this show, I would spin music inspired by the Beat poets in late summer. So it was that I start off with the dark noir of Morphine, and also Casey Cyr reciting an original poem with backup by Amram (he a collaborator with Keroauc many moons ago). I had recited a portion of Kerouac’s book “The Subterraneans”, with the sound of Thelonious Monk, solo piano style, in the background, as it may well have been for much of Jack’s own work in those early 50’s. Segment 1: Amy Speace with the signature tune for the show including the words “Summer’s gonna end before it begins, drive all night…”. Amy will appear along with Eilen Jewell and many others at this year’s Americana Music Association Conference/Festival (Amy herself is part of a Big Star tribute). Alongside the modern folk, more of the same from Natalia Zukerman. Greg Smith & The Broken English was spun with Darlingside, the latter just releasing a new album. Both bands are part of the Keene (NH) Music Festival on September 1. Segment 2: Retro rock from both The Mad Tea and The Modeens starts off this segment. Spun another from the strong Jo Wymer CD. Segment 3 is anchored around My Pet Dragon. They share billing with Just A Memory, A Little Affair, and Remember September at the Utica (NY) Arts & Music Fest, on 9/15. Then MPD share billing with A Ghost Like Me at CultureFest on 9/8, taking place in . Segment 4: I love D.B. Rielly’s “I Got A Girlfriend”; sounds like it could have been written by Buck Owens, with that Bakersfield sound and style well intact. Dan May and Tracy Grammer play a one-of-a-kind event, the Jamboree In The Pines, on a stage built and surrounded by pines. That will take place in Coatesville, PA, also on 9/1. Final segment includes music by Marianne Kesler, with just her second gig in in the last 10 months, plus an old traditional tune sung by Waterbug label founder Andrew Calhoun.

RCB REVIEW:

RCB Novus Ordo: Oustanding music includes Gigi Love with alternative country/folk from the Rockies, an instrumental piece from Brazil’s Lu Horta, and NYC’s At Sea (latest project by longtime airplay recipient Jason Brody; I first got to see the band last month)

RCB proper: Segment 1: Started with a new song from Jenee Halstead and a recent one from Sarah Blacker. Both songwriters are performing at Adam Ezra’s Ramble in Salisbury, MA, 8/25. The song I spun of Garrison Starr’s “Slow Crawl” will soon have a video by Garrison herself. Fellow West Coast songwriter Lily Wilson was heard afterward. Chris Riffle & La Resistance were on a showcase at Brooklyn NY’s Spike Hill on 8/23. Segment 2 includes music from a brand new EP by Voxhaul Broadcast. Val Emmich is about to launch a new CD. Spun another new one from roots rockers Whisperado. The Portraits (RCB Best Intertional Artists of 2011) will soon send me their new album. Segment 3 was filled with blues and country throughout, including another new song from Karen Collins & The Backroads Band (hearing either pedal or slide guitar through a number of these songs). Closing segment started with Parisian songwriter Hannah Judson and another from her unique-sounding album. A few summer songs also from Meredith Blis and Lynn Hollyfield.

RCB REVIEW:

RCB Novus Ordo: David Leinweber returns to my airwaves with his latest acoustic album. Award-winning songwriter Lee Feldman is present here with his 4th album. Kati Mac, whom I had interviewed maybe 5 years ago, returns with her latest. You can hear Rob Morsberger on piano and backing vox on “Highway 100”. Rob himself is releasing 2 new albums very shortly and is fighting cancer.I had last met him about 10 years ago supporting Jon Herington.RCB proper: In mid-August I always start with The Velvet Underground’s “The Gift”. Out of this tragicomic piece I always seem to take different directions. This year, having absorbed some history on Serge Gainsbourg, I spun the opener to his 1971 concept album re Melody Nelson. From that lovely pastiche of symphonic rock and spoken word (aha), we go to the spoken word intro and the psychedelics of The Small Faces, then some early Eno, and then the Madchester scene circa 1991 with a long danceable jam from Saint Etienne. Segment 1 following: Two NYC songwriters beginning this one (Bryan Dunn, John Brodeur), then some soft songs through the rest of this segment. Segment 2 begins with MJ Hibbett & The Validators’ concept album Dinosaur Planet. Followed up with live songs by The StereoFidelics and Sirsy. This weekend starts the first ever Liberty Music Festival, centered around The Legendary Dobbs here in Philly, with 74 artists performing. I spun 5 of those artists in one dedicated segment. My favorites are the ones from Venice Sunlight and The Way Home, both with classic pop-rock leanings. Late Cambrian is heard once again here with a great electronic-fueled song that should be in the clubs. All three with songs that remain in my head for days. Beyond this, spun another from The Timid Roosevelts, who are just about to release their new CD. Segment 4: Greg Klyma shares billing with Danielle Miraglia at The Burren in Somerville, MA. You can hear Greg back up Danielle on “See The Light” which I spun following Greg’s tune. Greg, along with Kate Klim and Meg Braun, perform at the upcoming Cutting Edge Of The Campire Festival at Passim, in Cambridge MA. Of course, I spin Meg’s tune “August” here. On the same weekend as the festival in Cambridge is the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival, as I spun music by 4 artists who are part of the lineup (Cary Cooper, Raina Rose, Anna Dagmar, Brother Sun). Closed with Heather Pierson’s summer romance song, plus a Philly subway romance song by Vance Gilbert, and an instrumental from Bolton MA’s Dan & Faith.
