NEXT SHOW will be published on or about November 21 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
On the next show I will conclude the debut airing of a Nanci Griffith tribute album
released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The
Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from
artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also
contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album
benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at:
www.paradiddlemusic.com www.maginternational.org

I already have another concept CD that will debut on the show after next, which is the week of 11/25.

Also for the 11/18 experience, I’m briefly reviving the New Music Sampler segment, to give airplay to artists that have been on my waiting list the longest. It will be like RCB Novus Ordo tho in a smaller, even friendlier form.

HOLIDAY music is now being accepted for airplay, both in digital and hard
copy (preferred) for Radio Crystal Blue’s final show of the year, dated for
the week of 12/16. Anything appropo for the time of the year (doesn’t have
to be Christmas!!) from indie/underground/DIY/touring artists will be
considered.

I’m still pretty excited about working in new media and getting to work on projects that will be insightful and fun for Philly residents to view. I am a few ideas in mind, and yet there isn’t much I really can do until I take a few more courses and have a crew ready to assist. No clue when more classes from the public-access network will be ready yet.

COVERAGE: 3-4 times a month I go out to Philly-area gigs to do photos, some
video, and a write-up on my website afterward. I do this for free, tho at
some point in the future I might want to barter this work or be simply paid.

I was at a showcase at Philly’s Kung Fu Necktie on Sunday 11/12.

NEXT shows I’m covering:
11/23: @ M-Room, Philly: Grown Up Avenger Stuff, Lori Citro among 5 female-fronted bands in a GoGirlsMusic event, with proceeds to benefit Philabundance and Wreaths Across America www.grownupavengerstuff.com www.gogirlsmusic.com

I’m looking for at least 2 more events to cover in December in or around the Philadelphia metro area.

Outside of radio for a moment. I received a note from Nina Gray, who manages the folk-rock duo-led band of Buskin and Batteau. Nina received a phone message from Bethany Yarrow (daughter of Peter), who runs The Action Center in Far Rockaway, NY. Bethany reported on the living conditions of families in the area, and about The Action Center’s place in the community. It truly exists to help bring more creativity and postiveness to the area. Bethany says it’s the only place in the area that is acting as a supply distribution center. Soon it will also be a warming center. You can contribute to The Action Center at www.theactioncenter.com Nina’s full note on Facebook is here: http://www.facebook.com/notes/nina-gray/hurricane-sandy-aftermath-what-bethany-yarrow-is-doing-how-you-can-help-with-tha/10152271993140788

RCB REVIEW from this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: Among the notable, you’ll hear new music from Philadelphia’s pre-eminent Celtic-folk ensemble RUNA to start off, along with transgender songwriter-activist Ryan Cassata, and Paris-based Matthias Strum.
RCB proper: Segment 1: Loretta Hagen & Danielle Miraglia share billing on 11/17 in Macungie, PA (had to look that one up). Spun more new music from Sarah Blacker and Darlingside in this segment too. These artists already performed at the Red Door in Portsmouth NH on 11/12. Segment 2 includes brand new music from solid alternative rock band Mercury Morning. The original Red Molly trio are heard in this week’s listen to “Trouble In The Fields”, the Nanci Griffith tribute album I’ve aired the last several weeks. Segment 3 contained a rather depressive vibe sorts. Lorraine Leckie released new CD with co-conspirator Anthony Haden-Guest this week. I can only imagine what celebrity LL was referencing in the song I spun. Elaine Romanelli & Anna Dagmar to share billing at a house concert in Franklin NY on 11/18. Final segment: Along with Stevie Coyle’s “Penny Wishes” was a tiny preamble containing some banter from a carny advertising cojoined twins. You’d have to hear it, I suppose. I also segued Lara Herscovitch’s “From A Bridge” (inspired by the Grand Canyon) with Heather Pierson’s meditative piano instrumental, referencing her birthplace of Joplin, MO.

@ Kung Fu Necktie 11/11/12

I can’t remember the last time I was rocked and rolled on a Sunday. Such it was tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, as one local band and 2 touring acts performed lots of good, blues and experimental rock. Granted, I never cared much for KFN as a venue, owing to the weird feng shui of the place: the challenging sloping floor to the performance area, the stage area a bit askew, the decent view you’ll get for seeing the band unless you happen to be in the front section. Not only that, I suffered an ugly stomach bug in late January after my first time seeing the place (tho I’ve pretty much recovered). Nevertheless, the sound is generally good; you can hear most of the sounds quite well even from the front entrance.
I was made aware of a 2nd floor addition to the venue, with a free show by local bands, Birds Of Maya and Watery Love. I didn’t give myself the chance to go upstairs. Next time I certainly will.

The Mlkman’s Union from Portland ME, are trio that show off unique time measures, plus a thick groove between guitar and bass. My favorite song of the set incorporated programmed loops of the lead vocalist Henry Jamison’s sound at start and end. Very workmanlike in stance, no flash and dash, no posering, just standing and churning out songs with some interesting timings, mainly from Jeff Beam’s fretless bass. It’s a sound like your new favorite coffee: strong, loud, and some unexpected flavor.

Song Dogs & The Nightjar led me to this show, appearing as a six-piece with the reintroduction of Emily Southerton on keys, sister of guitar-slinger Mike. You’ve read my take on this garage-rock band before, and tonight was no different. There were mostly new songs in the set, with somewhat longer jams and spirited attitude. Mariama O’Brien, in one of her first gigs with the band since becoming a mom, took her usual role on conga and occasional tambourine; she stood up to jam more intently on the latter 3 songs. Mike, in relatively formal attire was fairly animated in his stance, crouching and leaping in place every so often, while everyone else kept to the strong rhythm and groove, Co-lead singer Ryan McCloskey was clad in blue denim and plaid, rather symbolic of the band’s music roots. Unlike their show at The Grape Room last year, Emily’s keyboard action avoided technical issues filled in the musical gaps pretty well this time.
The band is set to go on hiatus and get into the cycle of completing and marketing the new album, which is set to drop in January.

Here’s VIDEO of Song Dogs & The Nightjar:
Chamberlin hails from Vermont, proseltyzing a sound totally their own. There are elements of blues and folk within their brand of rock. They are winding down a long cross-country tour, sharing the East Coast dates with opener Milkman’s Union. Last year they supported Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (whose own guitarist had recored Chamberlin’s debut album in 2010). It’s a rather intense sound, with 2 guitars, drums, and an old organ, (the kind with tubes in them). There are some harmonies in the songs but it’s mainly their lead singer Mark Daly’s voice and words you hear. One song was a gritty, hard blues-rock version of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al”. Another song saw their rhythm guitarist grab an extra drumstick to strike their drummer’s crash in the chorus. Sonically there’s much that they share with Song Dogs & The Nightjar, along with a confident professionalism that I don’t see too often on stage. To that I recalled Canadian acts The Trews and Matt Mays for comparison. I chatted very briefly with their tour manager/drummer afterward. Seems that Chamberlin is preparing to work on a new album for 2013.

After the show I was introduced to members of local band Tin Horses, friends of Song Dogs & The Nightjar.

There are 2 events I have my eye on for 9/7, one local, one in Wilmington.
9/15: Lotus Hill releases a new CD at Milkboy’s Center City locale. www.lotushillband.com
I am seeking another event within the first 2 weeks of September.

RCB REVIEW: RCB Novus Ordo:
Arlan Feiles with a long-awaited return to these airwaves, with a new band (The Broken Hearted) in tow, still with his own spin on Americana. Two bands heard in this show sharing a drummer, both with rather idiosyncratic indie rock; these bands are Generator Ohm and EndAnd.
RCB proper: One evening in late summer 2002 (2003?) I was at NYC’s The C-Note for an evening of poetry, curated by David Amram and Casey Cyr. David Wallechinsky and Ron Whitehead were some of the performers along with the aforementioned. It was a night I will never forget, as it opened my eyes to this expression of art, and eventually led me to appreciate the works of the Beat poets, mainly Kerouac and Ginsberg, even more. For the majority of the years I’ve done this show, I would spin music inspired by the Beat poets in late summer. So it was that I start off with the dark noir of Morphine, and also Casey Cyr reciting an original poem with backup by Amram (he a collaborator with Keroauc many moons ago). I had recited a portion of Kerouac’s book “The Subterraneans”, with the sound of Thelonious Monk, solo piano style, in the background, as it may well have been for much of Jack’s own work in those early 50’s. Segment 1: Amy Speace with the signature tune for the show including the words “Summer’s gonna end before it begins, drive all night…”. Amy will appear along with Eilen Jewell and many others at this year’s Americana Music Association Conference/Festival (Amy herself is part of a Big Star tribute). Alongside the modern folk, more of the same from Natalia Zukerman. Greg Smith & The Broken English was spun with Darlingside, the latter just releasing a new album. Both bands are part of the Keene (NH) Music Festival on September 1. Segment 2: Retro rock from both The Mad Tea and The Modeens starts off this segment. Spun another from the strong Jo Wymer CD. Segment 3 is anchored around My Pet Dragon. They share billing with Just A Memory, A Little Affair, and Remember September at the Utica (NY) Arts & Music Fest, on 9/15. Then MPD share billing with A Ghost Like Me at CultureFest on 9/8, taking place in . Segment 4: I love D.B. Rielly’s “I Got A Girlfriend”; sounds like it could have been written by Buck Owens, with that Bakersfield sound and style well intact. Dan May and Tracy Grammer play a one-of-a-kind event, the Jamboree In The Pines, on a stage built and surrounded by pines. That will take place in Coatesville, PA, also on 9/1. Final segment includes music by Marianne Kesler, with just her second gig in in the last 10 months, plus an old traditional tune sung by Waterbug label founder Andrew Calhoun.

RCB REVIEW:

RCB Novus Ordo: Oustanding music includes Gigi Love with alternative country/folk from the Rockies, an instrumental piece from Brazil’s Lu Horta, and NYC’s At Sea (latest project by longtime airplay recipient Jason Brody; I first got to see the band last month)

RCB proper: Segment 1: Started with a new song from Jenee Halstead and a recent one from Sarah Blacker. Both songwriters are performing at Adam Ezra’s Ramble in Salisbury, MA, 8/25. The song I spun of Garrison Starr’s “Slow Crawl” will soon have a video by Garrison herself. Fellow West Coast songwriter Lily Wilson was heard afterward. Chris Riffle & La Resistance were on a showcase at Brooklyn NY’s Spike Hill on 8/23. Segment 2 includes music from a brand new EP by Voxhaul Broadcast. Val Emmich is about to launch a new CD. Spun another new one from roots rockers Whisperado. The Portraits (RCB Best Intertional Artists of 2011) will soon send me their new album. Segment 3 was filled with blues and country throughout, including another new song from Karen Collins & The Backroads Band (hearing either pedal or slide guitar through a number of these songs). Closing segment started with Parisian songwriter Hannah Judson and another from her unique-sounding album. A few summer songs also from Meredith Blis and Lynn Hollyfield.
