NEXT SHOW: week of January 29, 2012. Look for a release date of January 30 or 31. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands, and also these:

CD FOCUS: VERMONT: VT Artists for VT Relief: http://www.mallettsbayrecords.com http://www.bluebirdpromotions.com

New Arrivals Volume 4: Artists Against Youth Homelessness http://www.mpressrecords.com I will spin 2 tracks each from these compilations. ********************************************************************************** Enjoying the new WordPress site so far? It’s getting more active tho not as interactive as I had hoped. I’ve replicated the site for the most part from the site on Google. I would like it to be more interactive tho! Maybe a new graphic theme? Let me know your feelings on this.

Birthday #42 comes up next week, and I likely will attempt to get my show done on Monday 1/30 instead of my customary Tuesday.

SHORTY AWARD voting continues into February. Give a creative Tweet as your vote for me in the radio category at http://shortyawards.com/radiocblue?category=radio

A part of my Brooklyn past is biting the dust. Southpaw is closing; the lease is up. The venue will be replaced by a tutoring school. I assisted in booking a few events there, and had the pleasure of seeing The Trashmen, Bettie Serveert, Jack Grace, Matt Mays & El Torpedo and a few dozen others over the years. And it had pinball! I will miss it terribly. I’m certain most bands that have played there will play Bell House or Public Assembly or the other notable hipsterish places. ************************************************* TWITTER FIVE TO FOLLOW: @Celeb_Traffic @CavalierArtist @marshallsplace @bradyoder @johnseeger2 *****************************************************

VIDEO: Dare Dukes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3uXGHlD0PI Tonight I am seeing and interviewing Lorraine Leckie at Milkboy Coffee in Ardmore. http://www.lorraineleckie.com

I’ve also planned to see 2 artists in February. Details coming. **********************

COVERAGE (see above): I do audio interviews, photos, video, and audio of live events. You can see and hear evidence across my Facebook and YouTube channels, plus the field recording FeedPlayer.Time, location and expense will be taken into account before taking on a job. ******************************************************************** RCB REVIEW: First on RCB Novus Ordo: Q.E.D. is a roots band from Manitoba. Sonni Shine & The Underwater Sounds provide rock and reggae from here in Philly. Heather Styka is a renowned folk songwriter making her debut here also. Veteran songwriter Craig Bickhardt closes the show with a sweet tune recorded at the Sellersville Theater

On Radio Crystal Blue proper: Segment 1 started out with songs of climate, then some polarizing feelings. Dare Dukes just released ‘Thugs And China Dolls”. Randy Stern is back on my radar now and is busy with shows in his new home of Austin. Debbie Miller’s ‘tippy toe’ is a moody and cute song. Segment 2 got country along with some jazz and rock in this mix. Tania & The Revolutionaries is the new project by Lani Ford, who led her rock band Stark for 8 years. I spun “Longing For London” as she was jouneying there for writing and for gigs. Her new band shares a bill with Sean Kershaw & The New Jack Ramblers this week in a new venue in Brooklyn. The Devyl Nellys are about to release a new disc and are touring cross country with 2 other bands. Spun another from the BYOB disc by Sirsy. If you’re keeping score at home, (or, as the joke goes, if you’re by yourself), next week will be the final one that I spin music from New Arrivals, Volume 4. I’m up to the final 3 songs on the disc. I can absolutely vouch for the food at Veselka, a real life place that Greta Gertler & The Extroverts sing about. 4 pairs of artists sharing bills were featured in Segment 3. Spuyten Duyvil’s tune is a 12th and bonus track from “New Amsterdam”. Red Molly’s tune is a cowerite between Abbie Gardner and Jonathan Byrd. Sharon Goldman with a wintry tune; she covers Simon & Garfunkel’s “A Hazy Shade Of Winter” elsewhere on her album. Raina Rose is now mama Rose, and is sharing a bill shortly with Red Molly. Segment 4 with jazz and rootsy songwriter material. There’s never a bad time to spin a Benyaro tune in this sort of mix. Joe Iadanza doing a couple of solo gigs while also fronting his new band, James B. Dukehouse. Carsie Blanton releasee a new album this month.

@ Kung Fu Necktie 1/26/12

Three multi-instrumental indie bands with folk/urban roots shared billing at Kung Fu Necktie . I was in attendance mainly to see Dare Dukes, a songwriter with insightful and thought-provoking lyrics. He presents a quiet and studious nature both onstage and off.     It was also my first time at the Fishtown dive populated tonight with many hipsters, and yours truly. No, I claim no hipster cred. I’m on the outside bringing you inside.   And inside were several dozen options for major and microbrews in pitchers and bottles. I had a $3 Kenzo.   Happilly, they are one of the few and proud local venues with the ‘citywide’ special.  Need I describe that? OK. It’s PBR and whiskey.  $4. The main floor space includes bumper pool (which I don’t ever recall seeing at a bar before); a wall display of classic beer cans (Blatz, Rheingold, Ballantine, and the like), plus a gold ‘hand’ that protudes upward from the display. Reminds me of the sentient gold ‘frog’ that rests in the main room at North Star Bar.
First up was  On The Water, a West Philly band with a charismatic lead singer Fletcher T. VanVliet.  Not exactly a Captain Beefheart band here. They are more like Tom Waits fronting an old-timey folk band complete with booming snare drum, toy piano, standup bass, accordion, and banjo.  Their 30-minute set was punctuted with humor & passion.  Fletcher is a good bandleader, literally stomping out tunes and battering a trusty acoustic.  He tore out one guitar string early in the set and did a quick change while Dan Martino on occardian led for one song.   Fletcher with Dan Timlin handle much of the stage banter..and several times insisted the audience wander closer to the stage. And there was a joke about doing a 6 minute song and requiring guitar tuning. Dan uttered “I think that’s the 6th Commandent..thou shalt tune thy guitar pre-6-minute song”.  Talking with Fletcher afterward, he cites another band, Pearl and the Beard, as an indie favorite.

Dare, with his band The Blackstock Collection have just released his second full-length, “Thugs And China Dolls”.. They had just played a favorite place in Brooklyn, Union Pool last night supporting Lucinda Black Bear.. Earlier in the week, the tour kicked off in Atlanta, the same locale where the album was recorded.  They will continue on the tour with a few shows in both the Midwest and along the southern half of the East Coast. Dare is from Savannah, GA and has a shared geographic connection with Jimmy Hughes, founder of the band Folklore who headlined this rainy evening.  Shortly before show time, bassist Jessie took a hit to her left eye with both her guitar strap and a wayward cable.  She took about 15 minutes to make a visible recovery and perform heroically during the band’s 30-minute set.  There is no typical Dare Dukes song; each song has several lead instruments, held together with Dare’s gentle voice, assisted by accordionst Gina.  They also sport a banjoist who occasionally played it with a bow. Keyboardist Phil worked keys and Korg in the far corner of the catercorner stage. For the last song they broke the fourth wall and peformed acoustic in arms length of the audience. Many people contribute their parts to the Dare Dukes sound; The Blackstock Collection’s touring group is a different one than is represented on both of Dare’s prior albums; notably, there are no horns on tour.

Folklore arises from Philly as well, tho hardly folk. One might expect them to be antifolk; their overt rock sound is tempered by clarinet (which was somewhat inaudible in the din), bass, violin (Andrew Keller, sporting a tie-dyed “Andrew Keller Experience t-
shirt) and Chad Arnett’s sweet-sounding lead guitar. Part of the songs center around a post-apocalyptic Earth involving all sorts of creatures.  I had mentioned to Jimmy afterward of a certain UK band who are doing much the same sort of concept. Fokllore’s songs were of medium-to-fast tempo, with one slower, droning song that recalled the proto-punk of The Velvet Underground and the modern rock of Yo La Tengo. Earlier in 2010 they supported Elf Power, and then did just a dozen shows 2011 while preparing their 13-song album “Home Church Road”

RCB REVIEW:
First on RCB Novus Ordo: First airplay of 2012 goes to Christine Havrilla. More specifically the airplay credited to Christine’s folk-rock band Gypsy Fuzz.  Damn Fine Gentlemen represent Australia with some blues-rock. May McDonough & Co. dazzle with fairly unique arrangements, right down to the percussion (not unlike a Tom Waits song). John McCutcheon closes this show with a song from his concept album reflecting on Woody Guthrie.

Starting 2012 a few weeks late, I wanted at least to represent January and winter in song if not New Year’s Day so much.  Brenda Kahn represented with a song going back to 1996, not from her album “Destination Anywhere” but rather a CMJ compilation, one of several dozen I’ve kept over the years.   Lily Wilson and HuDost share a billing at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles on 1/20. “Trespasser” by HuDost continues to mesmerize (as intended, I’m sure!). Also in segment #1, we hear The Kennedys once again, who are maybe the best artists I know without a Twitter account. They are preparing to release a new CD. So is Kris Delmhorst, who is heard in this segment too.  Ryan Tennis, my neighbor here in South Philadelphia, continues to host his Clubhouse house concert series and has unveiled a new website, with the intention of releasing a new album. Went back to Greg Klyma’s 2006 CD “Driver” instead of more recent releases. Schwervon! also working on a new album.  I spun Demetra’s “Don’t Wreck It” which became a sensation upon its release. She’s just releasing another new single of the same electro-rock genre titled “Quarter To Twelve” which, hopefully, will make it to my show.  Carrie Elkin & Danny Schmidt continue to split bills for the long-term.  Hungrytown presents a song for winter, the title track “Any Forgotten Thing”.  Hopefully they’re doing OK up there in VT.     Vance Gilbert, the now-reigning RCB Artist of The Year, is heard before two Katonah, NY citizens; they being Sloan Wainwright and Marc Black.  Marc’s tune “No Fracking Way” is a definitive protest song. Brooks Williams has just released a CD with Boo Hewerdine. The duo call themselves State Of The Union.  Stevie Coyle rounds out the show with a song from his concept CD “Ten In One”, referring to a sideshow tent at a carnival or circus.
