Song traditions on Radio Crystal Blue

Have you wondered why I spin certain songs of certain styles at certain times on Radio Crystal Blue.  Here’s a primer for you!

For a number of shows including seasonal themes, I’ve delved into my collection of CMJ compilations I collected in the late 90s. So many true gems of songs emerged from there. Probably most notable was Garrison Starr, who has found a somewhat regular presence in the RCB rotation.
January: First show of the year always introduces the ‘new year’ element into the show….and the end of the old
The Ramones “End Of The Century (Do You Remember Rock N’ Roll Radio)” – End Of The Century  Why this song? Well there was the whole thing with the year 2001 the real end of the century and not 2000, or was it not 1999?
The Royal Guardsmen “Snoopy vs. The Red Baron” (parts 1 and 2)
The Animals “Sky Pilot” – The Twain Shall Meet
U2 “New Year’s Day” – War
Death Cab For Cutie “New Year” – Transatlanticism
The Breeders “New Year” – Last Splash

March: The week of St. Patrick’s Day and the equinox always bring out the Celtic and spring tunes.
For the week of the Ides Of March, 3/12-15 I spin Iggy Pop’s “Caesar” – American Caesar CD
Any number of Celtic or contemporary Irish tunes have found their way into my show the week of St. Patrick’s. Most notable are the Gaelic tunes from the band Capercaellie, off of their Anthology CD released in 2009. Years ago I had regularly spun music from the Celtic band Rise, situated on the Isle of Bute. The end of those shows always includes a Van Morrison, often “Into The Mystic” but lately different songs of his have found their way in. Also I’ve included music from Hearts Of Space compilation “Celtic Women 3”
For the spring equinox I have taken to Saint Etienne’s “Spring” from their first album “Fox Base Alpha”. I used to spring The Sprinkle Genies‘ “Spring”, tho that CD is no longer functioning.

Last show in May, coinciding with Memorial Day weekend here in the US I would always add a choice collection of summery tunes..some classic, some more indie. Just about every year I would spin these among the notable:
Spike Jones & His City Slickers “Dance Of The Hours” with the setting being the Indianapolis 500, run that very weekend.
Martha & The Muffins “Echo Beach” – Metro Music
Tangerine Dream “Too Hot For My Chinchilla” – Lily on the beach

Anything appropo by The Pixies,The Breeders, Dick Dale, Primal Scream (generally from the “Screamadelica” album) and The Ramones
Uptempo dancehall reggae and ska
This year I had spun more of the British rock s
Also on that show I would devote time to spinning music of the finalists in that year’s Kerrville Folk Festival ‘New Folk’ competition.

In mid-August, to open the show I would always spin The Velvet Underground “The Gift” from their White Light/White Heat album, for the setting of the song takes place in mid-August. In recent years I have followed it up with a psychedelic theme, sometimes accenting dub or rock, or even modest techno or trance-like music.

For a number of years in late August I would recite verse and spin music name-checking Allen Ginsberg or Jack Kerouac and related poets.
First show in September, coinciding with Labor Day weekend, I would add in some leftover summer songs, and always doing a ‘transition’ to autumn songs. Every year I’ve spun a long Dick Dale tune (mostly “Surfing Drums”), leading into The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Third Stone From The Sun” with the iconic line “And you’ll never hear surf music again”. Then a pause….and then….jazz…or some easy listening tune, or similar. When I lived in NYC I would always spin “Autumn In New York”, a different version each year. I would often add related music for the year. Most recently I’ve spun from Celtic songwriter Pamela Wyn Shannon to ease into the transition.

Yes I take this very seriously.

Late October, the oldest tradition in my annals, is to add a number of seasonal music for Halloween, or whatever you call the holiday. I’m very fond of Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Misfits, The Reverend Horton Heat, music from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Cramps and The Ramones (yes, again). Every show has ended with Lou Reed “Halloween Parade (AIDS)” from his iconic New York album.

November: Thanksgiving week has seen me spin Lara Herscovitch‘s “Tequila Over Turkey”, from her 2003 album “There”. Only this year I even gave a nod to a Thanksgiving staple heralded by many classic radio stations, Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restauraunt Massacre”, tho I gave you the updated version, recorded some 30 years after the original.

December I always take off the last 2 weekends of the year and do not publish new shows. In that last show, I do a loose holiday theme alongside the standard radio segments. I’ve spun any number of classic holiday tunes, focusing on Christmas, December, winter, the end of the year, and such. Some songs that continue to get aired over the years include

Each year on that show include the reciting of Jack Kerouac’s “Home For Christmas”, a short non-fiction story set in the 1930s of Lowell MA.
The final segment of the year always includes certain songs that are my personal ‘Christmas’/holiday songs:
Tom Waits “Alice” – Alice CD
Simon & Garfunkel “I Am A Rock” – The Sounds Of Silence CD
The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl “Fairytale Of New York” – If I Should Fall From
Grace With God CD
The Passengers “Miss Sarajevo” (with Luciano Pavarotti) – Original Soundtracks 1
CD
Jimi Hendrix “Silent Night/Little Drummer Boy” – Merry Christmas And Happy New
Year CD single
The music has changed a bit over the years but these are the staples.
In earlier years I would follow this up with some bagpipe music.

Now that you have the 411, why not listen to some of those shows at my FeedPlayer on the site?

And if you want to get detailed, this page is where I have listed playlists going back 11 years.

I am into the 2nd week of courses at PhillyCAM and enjoying both the challenge and process of learning video equipment and how to build a show on the city’s public-access channel. One class finishes next week, and the other in 3 weeks time.
As a last minute decision, I decided to check out Beaucoup Blue at Ortlieb’s Lounge in Northern Liberties on 10/6. This venue has reopened under this title and was previously known as Jazzhaus. It was my first chance to see the father-son duo in over a year. My review of this show is at https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/10/07/ortliebs-lounge-10612/

On 10/11 I was in attendance at Milkboy Coffee’s Center City locale once again, enjoying the music of The Way Home, Food Will Win The War, and The City and Horses, along with West Philly’s own On The Water. Review has just been posted to the site and you may read it at

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Bobtown and Jesse Terry both highlights this edition; the former a folk ensemble, the latter an award winning songwriter. You’ll also enjoy hearing the space rock of The Boxing Lesson and roots rock from Interstate Buffalo.

RCB proper: A technical issue caused to re-record the entire show from scratch. I still managed to deliver the show on Wednesday as usual. Once again I began with Pamela Wyn Shannon’s acclaimed and limited edition album “Courting Autumn”. First segment includes touring songwriters Ellis and Meghan Cary, plus Nerissa & Katryna Nields who formally release their new CD this week. There’s a line in the song “Back At The Fruit Tree” that cites the month of October. Yes, you did hear more about space dinosaurs and more of the story (and backstory) from MJ Hibbett & The Validators. Segment 2 was much more uptempo. Spun more new music here from Add Moss and EndAnd (the latter’s EP is slightly deceptive in description, as there are multiple titles for different songs. Most songs in this segment were somewhat dark. Segment 3:Chuck Schaeffer introduced here with the title track, a Craig Bickhardt cover. I stayed along the lines of pedal steel to present Marc Berger and Sam Otis Hill (complete with Sam’s take on elections). Lily Wilson and Mare Wakefield take part in a songwriter in-the-round at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles, 10/24. Final segment: The pride of Ocracoke Island, NC, Molasses Creek kicks off with a medley penned by Fiddler Dave Tweedie: “Scat Reel/Charles In Jeopardy, First Day Of School”. Two songs of similar vibe closes us out from Craig Sonnenfeld and Lynn Hollyfield.

TWITTER FIVE TO FOLLOW: These are the last 5 folks that I’m following who
follow back:

****************
I felt a real sense of outspokenness this week, and vented the old spleen in my kindest and most heartfelt way. I normally hold back, but this time around I decided to just let it all out. I didn’t care as to who would reply or how. I think the catalyst was actually having a temp gig which lasted all of 2 days, where my mind and heart did a 180-degree turn. I felt my intense sensitivity and at once the willingness to express it.
Not a day goes back where, at least in the online world, I touch minds, hearts, and funny bones. I recall the late Jim Valvano’s last public appearance, at the ESPY Awards, March 1993. This quote gets to me: “If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”
This isn’t a personal credo for me, but I find myself often either in thought, or emotionally aware of something in myself or others, and often come up with something so funny to me, that it registers just as funny to someone else. The trick is conveying those feelings, thoughts, and magic when typing it on Facebook, or Twitter, or…even, yes… on Radio Crystal Blue. I do more than just spin songs. I share some personal thoughts, some anecdotes, some scenes from my life (tho I will often hide specifics to protect the guilty), and just be real.
So, I further encourage you to listen to my show, and in the words of Philly legend Bill Cosby “…and if you’re not careful, you may learn something before it’s done.”

INTERVIEW:
The veteran Colorado-based songwriter/bandleader Chris Daniels chatted with yours truly on September 10th, via Skype. Chris and I talked about his band, the Kings, a bit about life, health, politics, and other matters. The interview went about 40 minutes and it was just awesome to hear his stories, including the making of his first solo album “Better Days”. Chris pretty much predates the Colorado music scene proper. You can hear this interview at my ‘field recording’ FeedPlayer, accessible in the same manner you can hear Radio Crystal Blue, tho at a slightly different locale: http://www.bigcontact.com/radiocrystalbluefield This player is also available through my website, and you can stream, share and download the audio from this and other interviews.

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Standout out tunes from this edition include roots rockers Cletus Romp from Cincinnati, uptempo rock from upstate NY’s Oxford Train, and lovely Brazilian music from Carla Hassett.

RCB proper: Second consecutive week I begin with Pamela Wyn Shannon’s music, digging into her 2007 release “Couring Autumn”. Segment 1 includes contemporary songwriters. Meghan Cary, Craig Sonnenfeld and Elaine Romanelli, spun consecutively, perform at the Haverford (PA) Music Festival 9/15. Segment 2 gives us blues (Bob Corritore, Rod Piazza & The All Mighty Flyers heard here; Bob guests on his birthday with Rod’s band 9/29). Shupikai is a jazz/blues instrumental project led by NYC’s Bob Petrocelli. The transition to louder rock came easy as I spun another by The Trapps, plus music by ‘glamwave’ duo Girls On Film (yes, they love all things Duran),and a newer tune by NYC’s PaperDoll. Segment 3: Justin Roth, The Steel Wheels, and John McCutcheon performed at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield KS on 9/13. McCutcheon’s CD is homage to Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday. Blue Coin have an intriguing folk sound, somewhat spacey tune spun here. Sam Otis Hill & Co., Greg Klyma & Sarah Blacker, perform at the New England Americana Festival at the sainted Club Passim, 9/15. Sarah’s tune is the title track of her new EP. Segment 4: Avi Wisnia & Arlan Feiles performed at Milkboy Coffee’s Center City location on 9/12 for the latest installment of The 9…9 songwriters on one bill doing 3 songs each. I just had to spin Aztec Two-Step’s ode to Olga Korbut and the remembrance of dark days on what’s been 40 years since the Black September incident in Munich. Songs of healing and hope close this out: Red Molly with one of Molly Venter’s own songs, and a live recording of Craig Bickhardt (Sellersville Theater, Sellersville, PA).
