Lots to look forward to this week as I will be making up for much lost time, attending 3 music events. I’ll do my best to cover these shows and review right on my website.
I was at an orientation at PhillyCAM.org tonight in Center City, exploring the wide world of public-access TV, and to see where I might fit in. Workshops are beginning in late summer, with some free workshops very soon to be announced. I am finding an inner note sounding when I think about working the equipment. I desire to be a filmmaker, taking some of the work and ideas I’ve done in the past (and present) and bridging them into this medium. I’d also, ideally, like to further my study into photography. Along with exploring the career of community media I’m continuing to seek work matching my varied background. Typing this, I’m reminded that I have 2 resumes that should be linked onto my site. I will figure out how to do this shortly. It goes on the list.
Not for nothing I was at the opening of the latest Shake Shack branch, as it debuted in Philly at Sansom and 20th. Photos of the experience and some landscape photos of the area at
I revived my online ‘paper’ at http://paper.li/radiocblue/1333586729 It’s a good read, generated by keywords of subjects that fascinate me most and also pulls in URL’s from my social media feeds.

I will be attending at least one more show before the end of the month.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Eric “Roscoe” Ambel and Phil Cimino help contribute to the roots rock sound of DL Marble. Venice Sunlight is an earnest, honest, enjoyable duo to listen for in Philly. Darius Lux brings the vintage R&B and the funk. Moot Davis and Penny Ney with some contemporary nods to classic country as well.

RCB proper: Segment 1 started off with Daniel Goodman and Paul Sachs, both of whom share gigs in NYC this week. Paul didn’t win at Kerrville for the New Folk competition; nevertheless you should hear this album “Oil Town” which continues to grow on me. Flo Anito, My Pet Dragon and Andy Hawk (and those Train Wreck Endings) are part of Celebrate Fairfax, June 8-10. Segment 2: Started a run of steampunk and modern folk. Spuyten Duyvil and Roosevelt Dime are part of XFEST in Telford PA on 6/9. Matt Turk, The Chapin Sisters, and Putnam Smith all perform at the Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival, the largest annual environmental celebration in the US. Matt’s tune is a Taj Mahal cover. Segment 3 includes another song from Ashley McBryde. It could just be my weathered radio ears, but her song “Whole Damn Thing” sounds an awful lot like Garrison Starr’s 90’s hit “Superhero”. Give a listen and compare. More songwriter fare in segment 4, featuring intimate songs from duos Adler & Hearne and Buskin & Batteau (listen for the warm Hammond). The Nields, sisters Nerissa and Katryna, have released a new album, which I debuted for you. It oriented segment 5 into songs about home. Continued the theme with the beloved Boxcar Lilies, who share personnel in Dave Chalfant. “Feels Like Home” is a Jenny Goodspeed composition. The Boxcar Lilies share stage with Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem, performing a benefit concert on 6/17 in Northampton MA. Piano and guitar fuel jazzy songs by both Jon Regen (busy touring in Europe) and Allison Scola. Allison performed at Caffe Vivaldi in NYC on June 6, her first solo show in 2 years. Spun another one from Marc Black’s latest CD. Closed with Beth DeSombre (Dave Chalfant on her album too) and Shanna Underwood, who are in the round with a new Kerrville New Folk winner, Alicia McGovern on 6/9 (tonite!) in Portland, ME.

I’ve added SPOTIFY to the audio arsenal for Radio Crystal Blue. I don’t have to instruct you on this music service, do I? Well you can now hear the 4 most recent editions of my shows, all from the month of May, on the big website. That’s IF you have Spotify. Here’s the playlist link:

There’s a larger playlist connector also but I think WordPress is quashing the HTML. The above site will definitely get you in. Or just look inside Spotify itself.
Physically I’m recovering quite well, and the pendulum swings back. Biorhythms were mainly positive this week. Almost overdid it the day our temperature reached 90 first time this year. What am I talking about? Read more about biorhythms at www.facade.com/biorhythm
I’m composing notes on a project that will be remotely related to Radio Crystal Blue, tho it will NOT be in radio form. It’s too precious to share online with anyone yet. I want you to be surprised when it’s unveiled. I have a lot to learn before I get to this but it’s all in the works, starting this month. I don’t know if it will profit or not; I just know that it will reach more eyeballs and more people that appreciate my approach with music and radio.

6/8 Ryan Tennis www.ryantennismusic.com hosts the Clubhouse Concert series, a house concert in South Philly, about a mile from my own dwelling. I was there to see Carrie Elkin last year and was impressed by the performance space. Griz (Chris Grunwald), a fixture here for Philly folk fans, is the featured artist.
6/12 Just found out that Benyaro, the beloved NYC/WY act, are performing at The Fire this evening. I haven’t seen them since they were a 4-piece and still mainly an emerging NYC act. I understand they are a duo now, and as strong as ever musically. www.benyaro.com

6/14 M’Balia, another wonderful Philly artist, performs a free show at LOVE Park, in the heart of Center City. www.mbalia.com********************
RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Outstanding music here includes very personal and new material by Tom Goss, Bakelite 78 with their mix of country, blues and rock, and Fred Arcoleo’s songs of social justice.

RCB proper: I barely announced a summer theme to this show, which is my custom in the weekend of Memorial Day. I found myself airing songs that had both a summery feel as well as distorted. Summer is the time to have loud songs, even electronic pieces. It’s simply a time to turn the radio up; there’s more daylight to do so. Why not? So it’s a rare day I actually cue up favorites from 90’s acts like Catherine Wheel, Boo Radleys, th’ Faith Healers, Ride, etc. Yes, I have weird tastes, and often reaches across to Europe. As for the indie segments: Mostly songs about memories and longing filled segment 1 (Ryan Tennis, Catie Curtis prominently). Segment 2 gives us more spacey music from Heth & Jed and Kmang Kmang. Sylvia Platypus, a band I first encountered 2 months ago, give off a Velvet Underground-type sound amidst their modern psychedelics at times, especially on “Hush Now”. Segment 3: Justin Roth and Claude “Butch” Morgan, share billing on the main stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival tonight (6/1). Speaking of, congratulations to Edie Carey for being one of the 6 New Folk competition winners! Hard times were also sung about in week 3 (Randy Stern, Evangenitals). Segment 4

First airplay ina while for Christine Havrilla’s rock-oriented project Gypsy Fuzz. Patricia Silverberg has resurfaced with a new EP. Katie Barbato also debuting here with a track from “The Millay Tapes”, her take on some of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poetry. A couple of good night/good mornings from Eleanor Fye and Helen Austin round out the show.

This week’s show was recorded on Wednesday and released yesterday. In the last week my health took a bit of a setback, as I monitored some vague pain in my chest. It’s not in my heart, nor my stomach, but it’s enough to give me some concern. It almost feels like it gets any worse when I think of it. Maybe it’s pure anxiety. Maybe it’s something else. Honestly my mind is pretty sharp but the bod is not quite corresponding at this moment. I’m taking life very slowly right now but I do expect to put out a show next week as scheduled. I might attend a showcase on Monday if my health and the weather cooperate. Outside of that, I plan to stay close to home this long weekend.

As hinted here previously, I’m planning a career in film, primarily behind the camera. I won’t mind taking a turn in front of the camera as well. There’s an orientation to aspects of film production and editing next month, along with workshops, at the city’s new public-access cable network.
Radio Crystal Blue is also a reporting station to The Alternate Root’s Roots 66 (Roots/Americana) chart. Of course, I spin much more than Americana, but any songs that fit this genre and the chart’s guidelines get reported to the chart and website. 4 artists from the chart have received recent airplay here. http://www.thealternateroot.com/chart

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Changing Modes are back with their 6th album of idiosyncratic pop-rock. Doug Folkins also returns with country-infused Celtic music. Another favorite here is songwriter-thespian Dan McCormick’s take on NYC in song. Beggar’s Ride (songwriters Claudia SanSoucie & Kate Maguire, plus David Goodrich) introduce a heartfelt song; I love the twang in their voices.

RCB proper: This time last year I began formulating the programming in such a way that you’d hear more artists appearing in festivals or sharing an event with from the CDs I have here, alongside those I’d plan to give airplay to. This tactic has opened up airplay a lot more and greatly for the better. It all started with how I approached the Kerrville Music Festival’s New Folk competition. Every year there would be 4-6 finalists that I would give extra airplay to, because I had their music and because Kerrville is one of the big festivals of its kind in the country. The YaYas, who are consecutive year finalists, share billing with Brother Sun on June 2 in Brooklyn. I had spun Brother Sun’s song “Shine”, a Joe Jencks composition. Contemporary pair of songs followed by Jann Klose (opening act for Vonda Shepherd in NYC), and Meghan Cary (just back from Ireland). Segment 2 started more along the lines of Americana..or is that Canadiana? Blue Rodeo are now Canadian Hall of Famers. South of their border, I spun another from Yarn’s fine urban-country album. Vintage Blue checks in again from Chicago. The Happy Problem also here with a song that reminds me a bit of Nirvana’s “Breed”, tho that could be just my loose interpretation. The Roots On The River Festival is in early June. I spun music of some artists who are part of the festival, including The Steel Wheels. They, and fellow Americana ensemble Molasses Creek headline the Ocrafolk Festival on Ocracoke Island, NC next weekend. Barnstar!, also part of Roots On The River got spun here, with a new version of Mark Erelli’s “Troubadour Blues”. Red Molly in this mix too, with a Dolly Parton cover. Segment 4
was more songwriter-oriented, with another airing of Daniel Levi Goans’ tune “Silver Tongue” as a highlight.
