RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.

RCB Novus Ordo: The superbly creative NYC songwriter Alec Berlin kicks off this show. Gavilan, a roots-rock band from Philly, also debuts here. Another favorite here is Jenn Rawling & Basho Parks.

 

RCB proper: With the volume of material for this week’s show I did 5 segments worth. Segment 1 begins with John Batdorf, who is one of the official showcase performers at the SERFA Folk Alliance conference 5/18-20. Two others with this honor were heard in this segment: Marc Black (with a new CD), Honor Finnegan, and Emily Pinkerton, whom I debut on RCB Novus Ordo two weeks back. Ben Knighten debuts a CD in this segment, and a similarly titled song by Larry Saklad follows. Segment 2: Starts bluesy and especially in the matter of stimulants (Jack Grace, Rod Piazza, Terry Hanck, Tony Mecca). The Way Home and Automatic Children perform at this weekend’s Elephants For Autism Festival at Le Grand Fromage in Atlantic City. Montauk Music Festival is this weekend too (now you see why this show was longer than most). Here I spun music of Remember September, My Pet Dragon, debut CD by Kevin McWha Steele, and Deborah Lombardi, all of whom will be part of the 4th annual festival there on Long Island. Bryan Dunn’s new CD debuts on this show as well. Got more songwriter-oriented in the latter stages of this week’s show. Paired up songs about rain (Cary Cooper, Sarah McQuaid), and songs making a NYC reference (Natalia Zukerman, and a new album by Garrison Starr. Garrison sings on Natalia’s song “Brooklyn”). Garrison once worked with producer/multi-instrumentalist Neilson Hubbard on her albums; Amy Speace has Neilson in the producer’s chair for last year’s CD “land like a bird”. Amy and Ernest Troost are performing at this weekend’s Wildflower Arts and Music Festival. Ernest himself is a finalist in the festival’s songwriting competition. Out of segment 5: Sharon Goldman and Loretta Hagen peforming at Barrington Coffee House on 5/19.

@ The Grape Room 5/12/12

Another fun night at The Grape Room, with several local acts plus one from my NYC stomping grounds on the bill.
“Hi, my name is Paige, and I sing songs that I make up”….So began the set by Paige Allbritton, veteran singer/songwriter who loves life, loves to perform, and who had last released music in 2007. She performed in blue jeans, toned blue-square patterned shirt, with a red-heart sticker to show off her love for her mom (it would be Mother’s Day the next day) and a cherry-wood Ibanez acoustic. She owns a clear, strong voice (a bit of Joni Mitchell’s trill), and a stage presence that’s both serious and mirthful. Two of the songs in the set were especially well received, “Love Of A Lifetime” and “Secrets”. Both songs would fit well in TV and film. She closed with “The Killing People Song”, which represents a few of the themes in her songwriting, somewhat dark and reflective. One song I recall had references to Jack and gin tho I don’t recall  the title. Performing on standup bass was multi-instrumentalist Reverend T.J. McGlinchey.
  
Chris Schutz and The Tourists celebrated the release of their new CD “Summer In The Sun”, firstly with a handsome food spread on the 2nd floor, then following with a solid pop-rock effort on the main level. This is a 7-piece band with keyboards, drums, 3 guitars, and 2 backing vocalists. Their music style varies between the various members. A proud independent-music veteran, Chris told me before the show that all the members are classically-trained, conservatory graduates. And, indeed, Chris does have a firm hold on the band’s sound, orchestrating their sound and orientation on stage carefully. Their approach recalls Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, with guitars and keyboards ringing strongly in each song. For most of the show they kept to one principal vocalist (I believe her name is Steph Hayes), and their 2nd joined in on a few. Chris’s stage experience was evident, scoring well with his original material plus a cover of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers”. Chris was dressed in dark blazer and slacks, plaid tie, pinstriped shirt, and (keeping it rock-n-roll), green lace-up shoes, matching his greenish-blue Lakland bass.
NYC’s Paper Doll have consistently stuck to mainly the same band members in their 10-plus years performing, along with their own strong pop-rock style. It had been nearly 10 since I had seen the band myself, when Teresa was still in college.  They have toured worldwide with their efforts, including China several times. Tonight was their first gig in the Philly area. They previewed new songs that will appear on their forthcoming CD “Ballad Nerd Pop”  Teresa was contorting, strutting and constantly engaging the audience from the stage with a call-and-response moment from one song “You Can’t Stop It”. Teresa knows how to dress the part too; a yellow-green leopard-print off-the-shoulder number, and a black-white striped mini. She performed also on a Novation synth while Patrick Moloney produced great classic rock guitar. Rhythm section was manned by Jack Koch (bass) and Will Haywood Smith (drums)

With my schedule beckoning me back home safely, I stayed for just the first 10 minutes of Stonethrown‘s set. Judah Kim leads this band that has complex elements of rock, grunge and strong, emotive vocals between the 4 members. They’ve been around for 6 years and have a solid live following in Philadelphia. Earlier this year they released their latest EP “Chasin Me Around”. Among the items they had for sale were lighters with the band’s website and design.
  
Local punk-rock outfit 58 Fury were the headliners. I wasn’t around to see this band, but they were primed to play for a large audience tonight, as their audience was filing in starting from Paper Doll’s set, 2 hours before set time.

DREAM JOB?: It isn’t exactly radio. It’s more like film. I’ll never get away from radio, but I’m beginning to seriously explore the film industry, generally as freelance but also as a long-term career move. Next month I’m taking a class in this area, and we’ll see where it leads.TROUBLESHOOTING: One listener expressed some trouble accessing the show via an old Mac computer. Does anyone have suggestions on better listening to Radio Crystal Blue through a Mac?

In the area of handicapping, I’m exploring different variables to play, tho I only wager money now on the larger races in the year. In case you wondered, I did have the Kentucky Derby winner in advance, for the 2nd year in a row. I had selected I’ll Have Another in the 2nd of three Future Wager pools, and collected more for a win bet than those who waited until race day to bet him. RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Shupikai is NYC bluesman Bob Petrocelli’s instrumental group. New Riders Of The Purple Sage have resurfaced for a new album, out on Woodstock Records, the folks who bring you Professor Louie among others. Jim Allchin is known for his tenure at Microsoft as much as his role as a musician; I spun from his second solo album. Chip Taylor also receives airplay here. Chip is the composer of very famous songs made popular by Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Jimi Hendrix, and others. A great country/rock success story all his own. I spun the bonus track from his latest CD, which memorializes victims of a gunfire massacre last summer in Oslo and Utoya in Norway. Marc Berger’s album “Ride” celebrates his love of the American West. Listen for Eric “Roscoe” Ambel on backing vocals on the track I spun. The incredible Anais Mitchell is also part of this show as I aired a track from her new album, her first independently-released album, in fact.

RCB proper: Growing up in Brooklyn in the mid-80’s I fondly remember many a car radio blasting “Brass Monkey” tho I had little idea as to who were making that racket. Well I soon found out about the Beastie Boys and really took to the Check Your Head album all the way up through Hello Nasty, which I consider their magnum opus. Most people either love or hate Paul’s Boutique. I am not crazy about it but you can’t deny the beats they used. Meanwhile, I memorialized Adam Yauch spinning a few tracks from the group’s discography. Shambala features the chanting of Buddhist monks. I would close the show with “Namaste” off of Check Your Head, a moving tune with MCA on the mic. Segment 1: Sci-Fi Romance returns with a concept album about the John Henry legend. Stayed in a country/rock/jam/spirit vibe for the rest of this segment. The Kennedys, and Greg Smith & The Broken English performed at City Winery on May 8 for the release of the compilation “Occupy This Album” benefiting the Occupy movement. Segment 2: Spun another from the new album by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real, plus recently released music by Antigone Rising and Lisa Bianco. Both artists share billing at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ on May 11 (yikes, that’s tonight!). Segment 2 was mostly blues into rock, plus brand new music by Lisa Biales, sharing vocal duties with songwriter/producer EG Kight. Spun music of 4 songwriters who are performing at the Music In The Vineyard Festival, Belvidere NJ, May 19. Segment 4 kicks off with 2 very similar sounding songs by M’Balia and Roger Silverberg. Listening to the chords in the beginning. There were elements of bodies of water in just about all the songs. Carrie Elkin and Danny Schmidt continue to tour many shows, and their songs finish out this segment.
