NEXT SHOW will be published on or about December 17 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

This will be my FINAL show for 2012. Also, please note that RCB Novus Ordo is done for 2012. Both podcasts will return for the week of January 6.
Further this coming show carries several RCB traditions. You’ll know them when you hear them. If you want to be clued into such traditions, why not read the newest page on my site?
https://radiocrystalblue.net/rcb-traditions/
PROGRAMMING NOTE:
Each week through my January shows I’m airing tracks from The 1861 Project,
a series that touches upon the Civil War experience. We’re up to Volume 2:
From The Famine To The Front. This collection of original music recalls
those families with Scottish and Irish ties who fought in the war. From the
liner notes “Every singer, player and writer on this album has a strong
connection to Ireland, by ancestry, birth, or just by heart”. More about
this fascinating series at www.1861project.com
On 12/26/12 at 2pm ET I will do a COUNTDOWN exclusively on Twitter, synchcronized to Facebook, as I will announce the top 100 artists of the year. I plan to also announce then the winner of the title of Best New Artist, top 10 albums of the year, and the updated charts for the quarter and for all time.

I want Radio Crystal Blue to continue to grow, to reach and touch minds and hearts, and to have more of a real presence. I also want a new logo for the show, and to work in a studio space to make this show a bit more tangible. Right now that’s the vision. Carrying that vision appears to be most challenging right now.
Meanwhile I have two video projects that are awaiting people to volunteer and help create. In the meanwhile I remain available to do some shooting myself, now that I have the means.

COVERAGE: 3-4 times a month I go out to Philly-area gigs to do photos, some
video, and a write-up on my website afterward. I do this for free, tho at
some point in the future I might want to barter this work or be simply paid.

NEXT shows I’m covering:
Going to two shows at Milkboy in Ardmore
12/14 (tonight): At Sea www.atseamusic.com
12/29 Ray G. Ward www.raygward.com

RCB REVIEW from this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: I have carried a head cold much of this week, and I did not sound nearly my best. But the music remained top-notch. Last RCB Novus Ordo show for the year went this way: Pine And Battery is fronted by Jeff Campbell, whom we’ve heard some songs of throughout the year. Intriguing authentic Americana sound via Northern Sweden, from Buford Pope. Strong debut from the eccentric yet accessible sound of Carla Bean.

RCB proper:Just before I was prepared to record, I learned of the passing of Ravi Shankar. I mused over the whole raga-rock thing and how it fused into rock in the 60s and beyond. I began this show with The Moody Blues and the spoken word “The Word” along with “Om” which close the concept album “In Search Of The Lost Chord”. A neat transition from there to a new favorite, spinning The Orb’s collaboration with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Segment 1 has elements of timeliness, the sense of time. M’Balia’s “Nobody’s Coming” is an insanely catchy pop song. Within the first of 2 New Music Samplers we hear from alternative pop rock artist Jason Masi as well as the multi-talented Sam Kulik. Sam I met while he was performing with art rock band Starring earlier in the year. “South Philly Daze” is what he calls a ‘song-poem’, a phrase and style he borrowed from Penn & Teller. Being based in South Philly myself, this had to be spun. Segment 2: Voodoo Swing, rockabilly from Arizona, are finally releasing the new material I’ve spun for you a few months now. WitchFeet’s sound is just lovely, recalling elements of The Beatles, Guided By Voices, maybe Alex Chilton. Segment 3: The folk collective in NY’s Hudson Valley known as Tribes Hill are doing their annual Solstice Concert on 12/16. Fred Gillen Jr.’s “Morphine Angel” has a Christmas reference in it. Susan Kane appears on this song. And we hear Susan in the song following, an ode to NYC and winter which closes her brand new album, with amazing studio personnel for the ride. In New Music Sampler 2, we hear from Philadelphia-area band Lotus Hill, whom I’ve seen perform twice. Also here is the strong Nashville sounds of Leyla Fences, with the funnest album title you’ve ever heard. Closing segment: Debra Cowan’s new album was recorded at a folk club in West Yorkshire, UK. I aired a traditional song she sung a capella, and followed it with a similarly titled traditional tune by Putnam Smith. It would have been too easy to spin a Ravi Shankar tune at the end of this show, or even the classic original of “Within You, Without You” by you-know-who. Instead I went with Patti Smith’s interpretation, which appears on her 2007 covers album “Twelve”

So you know the word by now: Vance Gilbert scored another #1 finish in the Quaterly Charts. There are about 20 other artists who mathematically have a chance to reach the Artist of the Year title. I’ll reveal that chart, and similar ones, just after Christmas. Quarterly chart is at the top of the Chart page: https://radiocrystalblue.net/chart-page/

Had a pretty good time at The Grape Room, seeing Jeff Campbell and his band for the first time. Review of the evening at https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/09/30/the-grape-room-92912/

This week I began courses in digital video production and production management. Digital video production is introducing yours truly to the Canon Vidia camera, which is what’s used for cablecasting.

change soon. Also, with the video skills I’m learning, I might do more
video oriented work in the future.

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: First 3 artists heard on this edition are music by Philly metro-area songwriters/performers, all whom I had seen perform at Silk City , a lounge/diner venue in Northern Liberties. Corporate Hearts I had debuted for you last year, a duo of brothers who had opened for MxPx’s Mike Herrera at The Fire last year. Black Light White Light from Northern Europe have a wonderful dance/rock groove. . The Universal Thump is a most unique orchestral-pop concept by Greta Gertler and Adam D. Gold
RCB proper: Officially ended the 3rd quarter of airplay with this show, startign with my annual airing of “Song X” by Neil Young & Pearl Jam. This was teh first song I aired on my show back in late 2000. First segment featured artists who are performing at this year’s Folk Alliance Region Midwest Gathering, specifically artists who are on Performance Line during the week. One such artist is Chico Schwall, new to the rotation on RCB and who presents a tradiitonal song here. Chico mentions the legend of John Henry in his song; in turn I spun Andrew Calhoun’s reworking of that particular traditional song. Segment 2 starts with Kirsten Thien’s newer rendition of “Treat ‘Im Like A Man”. The original appears on her debut album from 2001, which I certainly did spin at the time of its release. A song similar in songwriting and energy by Deborah Lombardi was heard next. Segment 3: Spun a brand new tune by Social Hero, along with another great song by Blue Sour. Segment 4 includes songs musing on facing death and despair. Marybeth D’Amico’s “Der Grenzer” focuses on a soldier at the Berlin Wall. Paul Sachs follows this up with “Poor Man’s Out”, with powerful songwriting which opens his album “Oil Town”. Segment 5 includes another new song from Lee Feldman and a song from a new EP by newlywed Daniel Levi Goans.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about March 21 and will be available for about 4 months beyond. Owing to schedule demands, I usually aim for noon Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands. RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

You’ll also hear: CD FOCUS:”Little Blue Egg” by Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. This is a disc with 11 long-lost recordings found by Tracy 2 years ago, I will spin 2 tracks from this compilation. http://www.redhouserecords.com http://www.tracygrammer.com **********************************************************************************

Firstly I was under the weather much of this week, tho am emerging from whatever is ailing me, and also learning a few things about responding to people, emotionally and otherwise. I promised and delivered music from a number of artists that appear this week and weekend at SXSW. An entire segment was created around Megan Slankard, who was performing on several showcases along with fellow songwriters based elsewhere around the US. After remarking that it was time I got off the grid in terms of live local music, my computer chose to follow suit for a brief while. Web issues are largely resolved, tho I’m likely to get the PC an upgrade in RAM and maybe an external hard drive. New monitor also. I also want to continue bolstering the RCB idea to more folks, tho it all comes down to realistic expectations re the finished product, along with how much time and $ to devote to it. I still seek a day job within reasonable commute time of Philly.

REVIEW: I was at El Bar on 3/10/12, seeing local bands of some renown, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. When I say ‘go off the grid’, I mean seeing bands/songwriters I’ve never heard, in a place I’ve never been to before. I recommend doing this once every few months. Have a look at what happened in my latest review at http://www.radiocrystalblue.net

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.

On RCB Novus Ordo: The smooth modern rock of Tom Fuller Band started this show. Spanking Charlene appears here with a song about a Brooklyn nabe (Steven Van Zandt in the producer’s chair). Secret Skwirl, a project borne out of remastered lost recordings and an unknown band is one to watch for. I’d love to see whether the guys behind that music will resurface. Wes Tucker & The Skillets with an album recorded live at Alene’s Grocery in NYC (you non-NYC denizens should know that Arlene’s Grocery is on the former site of a grocery). Folklore also debuts here with (classically) epic tales of dinosaurs, robots, apocalyptic matters (unless I’m confusing them with a certain UK band. Nah).

RCB proper: RCB tradition is for me to spin Iggy Pop’s “Caesar” and also some Celtic music. This year I reintroduced the music of Philly-area group RUNA. Avi Wisnia & Rachael Sage performed an SXSW event already this week, and Avi’s back to the East Coast touring as usual. Nice to have Remember September on the radar again here in segment 1. Segment 2 includes a brand new song by Schwervon!, a song recorded in Memphis. They are about to move to Kansas (and I feel like I’m among the last to know somehow). I’m used to MAKAR rocking out on earlier albums, tho I do like the groove on their new CD, which I spun from again. Remember September and Talking To Walls are playing a week-long music festival somewhere in NYC’s Upper East Side; my online notes don’t indicate who else is in the festival. TTW’s tune has bagpipes in it! My Pet Dragon shares billing with 3 Kisses and Manda Mosher at a Go Girls Music SXSW event on 3/17. As mentioned earlier, Megan Slankard’s appearing at various SXSW shows practically inspired a whole segment in itself. Again I spun from Jeff Campbell’s CD, the song he wrote with Megan. From there, we hear the lovely partnerships of Sproule/Curreri and Elkin/Schmidt, plus extra music from TX’s own Raina Rose (who’s now a mom), and a magnificent song from Rebecca Loebe, plus a new one from Sarah Blacker. Further segment includes some righteousness in song from Andrew McKnight and Sean Kershaw (listen for Pat Wictor on lap steel and vox). More SXSW love for Christina LaRocca and Casey Desmond. Carolann Solebello and Pat Wictor co-bill tonight (Friday) at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA.
