PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about June 5 and will be available for about 1 year. I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 10 songs, one each from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you some backstory of each.

In case you wonder: I usually take out some part of Friday (or Saturday at this rate) and figure who to give airplay to. Artists and their reps are contacted by email days before airplay is granted.
5 YEARS AGO: Guess what music I spun 5 years ago this music? Among the notable that aired in late May 2008 are those remain on my current radar: Devon Sproule, Nerissa & Katryna Nields, Garrison Starr, Catie Curtis, and Arlon Bennett. I don’t have the audio of that show but I can give you this old playlist and more if you surf on over to http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/radiocrystalblue/message/2463
***
DONATIONS: Concerned about my financial footing but I remain somewhat hopeful in the opportunity of finding work on a regular basis here in and around Philadelphia. In the meanwhile, you may donate to Radio Crystal Blue via the PayPal button at the home page.

IDEALISTIC SPORT on hiatus: I’m putting aside Idealistic Sport, the sports/stats/music podcast for now. I have felt myself filtering content based on pressure from some areas in my life, enough to limit the quality and amount of content that would make a podcast viable in my own eyes. I will instead turn to small amounts of audio by using Chirbit, an audio-tweet service. It’s a service more people ought to use.. I’m there www.chirbit.com/radiocblue For posterity’s sake I’m keeping the podcasts active on my site so you can listen to the history being made. I can’t promise just now when it will return but I have no desire to take it down.
As always, all info is repeated on the Idealistic Stats blog, with occasional posts, further repeated at Glipho, Facebook and Twitter. The blog has the final answer about all stats/sources/analysis and opinion www.idealisticstats.wordpress.com
********
RCB Novus Ordo: Jan Seides received exposure on this program way back in 2003 and that continues to this day using the same formula as before, and with some awesome Austin-area studio personnel. Racing Rain is a noir-sounding band I saw at Cape May earlier in the year. Amy Lynn & The Gunshow I had seen several times. She is absolutely captivating with her voice. Grown Up Avenger Stuff I met at a GoGirlsMusic event here in Philly last year, great hard rock sound. Rachel Schain’s career I’ve tracked for a few years now, and was proud to attend her CD release event this year. Dar Williams. What else can I say? (Except to type that she is musing on mythology for her latest album).
RCB proper: I feel like spreading out the summer songs through much of the year and giving you a few songs at a time right at the beginning of every show. I have a larger-than-average appreciation for Shonen Knife. “Ramones Forever” is a faithful homage. Naturally I gave you two songs from Forest Hills, NY’s finest…creating something of a Cali summer segue. Earlier in the week I asked folks on social media to name their favorite humorous California-centered rock song. My answer “Dick’s Automotive” by The Rugburns. And if you like those apples, see Steve Poltz’s solo version of this tune on YouTube. You’re welcome. Congratulations to Ellis, Honor Finnegan and Paul Sachs among those who were among the winning 6 in the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Music Festival. Segment 1: Spun songs from those who are scheduled features in this week’s portion of the 18-day event. I included a song from a new album by Buddy Mondlock. I also hear that Butch Morgan and Jaime Michaels are planning new albums. Segment 2: Jessie Killguss & Radio Gold with a summery song here. Majority of songs here are reflective, idealistic in nature, taking life in perspective. New tune here also from veteran Chicago blues performers John Primer and Bob Corritore. Segment 3: The Wyld Olde Souls get a long-waited debut here. I’m in love with David Rogue’s sound, not to mention his vocal strength. That’s the kind of voice I want to have when I grow up. Aqua Cherry with a new EP, the title track far and away the best of the bunch. Boy + Kite from TX also return with a new EP, a nod to classic indie label stuff from the 80’s-90s (think My Bloody Valentine, Boo Radleys, 4AD label, etc.). Segment 4: Marci Geller, Lara Herscovitch are part of the Herland Music Festival on Sunday 6/2, Stafford Springs, CT. Marci, along with Steve Chizmadia are among those performing at the NERFA Capital Region 1-Day Mini-Conference. This takes place on 6/9 in Rockville MD. Buskin & Batteau, along with Noel Paul Stookey and other great songwriters will gather on Saturday June 1, for a benefit concert in College Park, MD. The concert benefits the World Folk Music Association. Final segment: Heather Maloney was debuted 2 weeks prior on RCB Novus Ordo, and we hear more magic from her s/t album kicking this segment off. A slight theme about the elements at play here. Heather, plus Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem are part of the Asparagus Festival, Sunday 6/2 in Hadley, MA. Raina Rose is about to unveil a new album. Yours truly had the opportunity to air a track before the official release date. She and Rebecca Loebe are part of the CD release event on 6/13 at Austin’s Cactus Cafe.

THE ALTERNATE ROOT:
I’m proud to announce here that I’m joining the folks at The Alternate Root. I am assisting with advertising sales for the top music magazine devoted to American Roots, both worldwide and in the Internet world. At the heart of my own choices of genre (and I like just about all of them), some of my favorites do comes from Americana, roots, alternative-country, and close-knit sound-alikes to these. Sounds that should, and do, feel familiar, fresh, broken-in like your favorite pair of jeans or boots.
The Alternate Root operates a weekly magazine in print and online, along with a weekly airplay chart, a TV program that reaches millions nationwide along with its presence on the website, and of course, the latest in newly released material. In fact, this week the website lists their top 35 artists based in East Nashville.
As a reporting station to their Roots 66 Airplay Chart, I’m well-versed in knowing who are new and breaking to their radar, and some of that info translates to Radio Crystal Blue. Building upon this knowledge and with my years of experience doing radio and connecting with industry people over time, this alignment is a new and important step in my professional growth. There are a number of areas The Alternate Root provide for advertising and I’m happy to shed more light on this if you are willing to inquire. http://www.thealternateroot.com

RCB Novus Ordo: There’s a good buzz here in Philly about indie-pop rockers Looseleaf Trio, whom debut here. Fallen Riviera also debuts; they were first heard about a year ago on this program. Scranton, PA’s Silhouette Lies have a post-hardcore rock thing going on which I’ve seen in person and I’m now a convert. I was thoroughly impressed by the musicianship and production from Steph Barrak. Her music is easily the best I’ve spun from this program.

RCB proper: It was several years ago that my usage of music from the Grassy Hill New Folk Competition, part of the long-running Kerrville Folk Festival, served as the prototype for airplay features. I would spin the music of whichever finalists I had music of (or permission at least to spin of at least). From here I expanded to doing likewise with full showcase events and similar festivals. The idea was simply to be more inclusive of those who were not in direct focus for my airplay but who happened to share billing for an event or a festival or similar circumstances. This year, 7 finalists at Kerrville were aired on this week’s podcast. Also here I aired Pat Wictor’s ode to the campfire experience at Kerrville. In the opening segment, I included 2 short pieces with the now late keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and iconic Beat poet Michael McClure. From here, naturally, a Doors song came to mind..and then a gently intro to summer, saluting graduates and the sun alike (a well-produced piece by Baz Luhrmann, and NYC underground rockers Heth & Jed). Segment 3: Spuyten Duyvil & Bobtown share billing at Urban H2O in Yonkers NY on June 8. James Hearne, who fronts Philly’s own The Way Home takes a solo turn with an absolutely new song. Segment 4: Jo Wymer & Danielle Miraglia bring the blues in this one. Both songwriters are at the FMCU Coffee Beanery on June 8 in Media, PA. You also get to hear more new music from Polarcode, making bigger splashes in the Midwest. Segment 5: More featured performers at Kerrville in focus here, including brand new music from the almighty Amy Speace. Her songs on the album “How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat” are prefaced in the liner notes with Shakespearean references (“Hesitate” which I spun, aligns with the end of “Romeo & Juliet”. Listen and figure why) plus a fun tune from The Sweetback Sisters, and a rather engaging song from Nels Andrews (who really should be aired more often). Segment 6: Mary Gauthier. What more to say? This: Debut of a new album, her first live album at that, and twinned here with The Steel Wheels, who have a new album and a good late spring song. Both perform at Roots On The River, Bellows Falls, VT on 6/9. Final segment presents a new version of the matthew show’s “Bring Me Safely Down”, along with brand new music by Craig Sonnenfeld. The songs in this segment hope more than anything else. Closed out with Heather Pierson’s piano composition, as she reflects on the Midwest weather.

IDEALISTIC SPORT aired music from these artists this past week: Annie Wenz, Theopolis James, Song Dogs and Fellaheen. I’m continuing to seek music that would befit a sports theme or otherwise be something upbeat to fill in the time, so as not to make the show a sermonette.

While I fight some depressive moments in the midst of a job hunt (I’ve been out for months, people), avoiding a lot of extracurricular activity, I am bravely going out tonight to cover an event, first one in nearly 2 months. The Miners, whom are part of the 5/12/13 podcast, are performing at Milkboy Philly, in the heart of Center City. http://www.minersmusic.com I aim to provide a review plus photo and video.
It’s also a very busy week handicapping/investing, as, yes, I am also focused on the horse racing action at Pimlico and the Preakness Stakes. Later on Friday I will publish a podcast that covers some of the action here and other sports. The podcast is called Idealistic Sport http://www.idealisticstats.wordpress.com Idealistic Sport podcast is available in its own FeedPlayer on that blog page.

********
RCB Novus Ordo: Edgar Breau was the founder of 70’s Canadian rock band Simply Saucer. He returns with his latest solo effort kicking off this show. Couple of strong voices and songwriting are heard on this show, from both Heather Maloney and Zoe Mulford (a loose concept sort of album “Coyote Wings”).

RCB proper: I came into permission of spinning songs of some top artists from several genres and so you hear a few new names in the mix. Kevin Russell of The Gourds leads his own Americana/roots project Shinyribs. Also new are Texas songwriters Javi Garcia and Dustin Welch beginning segment 1. Both roots songwriters are sharing billing at the Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos on May 18. Jack Grace Band and Miss Tess also sharing billing at something called Skunk Funk. It’s happening at the Nelson Odeon in Cazenovia NY, May 25. Love the song by M’Balia referencing guys’ names and their shortcomings in “YooHoo”. Chastity Brown’s music impresses me the more I listen to her grown-up soulful sound, a sound not unlike M’Balia’s tho less pop-oriented. Segment 2: The aforementioned Miners finally get their debut from an album released earlier in 2013. I had first seen the Philly roots band 2 years ago. Late Cambrian returns with a new album. Segment 3: Coming out of depression is a personal theme for me this week, and it made manifest in this segment, notably from new music by Durham NC’s Jon Shain. This was paired with Vance Gilbert and Liz Longley (Vance is a capital F fan of Liz’s). And speaking of, Liz, along with Nerissa & Katryna Nields and Sloan Wainwright are some of the principal performers in this year’s Muses In The Vineyard, May 18, Belvidere NJ. Final segment was extended as I honored a request for a couple of songs (Geoffrey Armes, Hank Stone). What arose was a seafaring theme for the first 6 songs. Included is Debra Cowan, from a UK folk club recording, singing in a capella form both a Rudyard Kipling poem and a John Connolly song. The much-lauded songwriter Jess Klein debuts here in the mix as well.

Outside of radio, even outside of job-hunting, where I’m averaging about one interview a week, I’m still very involved in horse racing, and this is one of those very busy weekends where handicapping is at the forefront. I’ve already made selections for those big races happening at Churchill Downs. You can hear me talk about them on my sport-based podcast, titled “Idealistic Sport” at www.bigcontact.com/idealisticsport with the same options as with Radio Crystal Blue to stream, share and download all material. ********
RCB rewind:
RCB Novus Ordo: Great way to start this show is with the superb songwriting and musicianship of Susan James, introducing a ‘California Hybrid’ sound, something perhaps not fully explored since the days of Linda Ronstadt and sound-alikes. Vinyl Soup explores rock via electronics and universal peaceful messages. NC’s Jon Shain returns with his 8th solo album. Lizanne Knott, whom I recall being part of Dan May’s most recent album on backing vocals, resurfaces for her latest solo effort. Hudson Valley’s own Steve Chizmadia, whom I last saw some 10 years ago in NYC also has a new album which is heard on this program.
RCB proper: First segment includes music from artists perCraftforming on this weekend’s Crafts at Lyndhurst event in Tarrytown, NY, presented by the folk community of Tribes Hill. Within the segment we hear brand new music from Susan Kane, and the LeVins, whose album is mainly inspired by 13th-century poet Hafiz. Segment 2: Having met the sainted Ellis Paul last month in Cape May, and receiving his 2010 CD “The Day After Everything Changed”, I aired “Dragonfly” which I believe he performed during his keynote speech. Ellis, with Rebecca Loebe, perform at Club Passim in Cambridge MA on 5/16. Adrienne Pierce is also reintroduced with a new album. Segment 3: Spun another new one from Sirsy. I say again, they have never sounded better! Spun an older tune from Philly’s own Prima Donna, who reunited with original lead singer Kelly Werkheiser late last year. She is on vocals on the song “No Compromise” which I aired. Segment 4: Antje Duvekot, after many moons, returns to the RCB airwaves, with a new album titled “New Siberia”. She and David Wilcox, heard before her in this segment, will be performing at The Towne Crier in Pawling NY on May 5. More thoughtful love songs in this segment from Buskin & Batteau and Elaine Amherd continue the theme. Segment 5 was devoted to artists who are part of the RiverRoots Music & Folk Arts Festival in Madison IN May 17th and 18th. Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin, newly engaged are heard in this segment. Final segment are mostly quiet, reflective songs here. Beth DeSombre performs in Dan & Faith Senie’s new songwriter series at the Harvest Cafe, Hudson MA, 5/8. Instrumentals by John Roy Zat and Heather Pierson close out this long edition of RCB.
