PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about March 13 and will be available
for about 1 year. I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as possible
thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

Listen for some special seasonal songs for this week and next. Long-time listeners may know what to expect. The rest of you, be prepared for a few surprises.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 6-8 songs, one each from a brand new
recording. I spin the music and give you the backstory of each artist.

Lately, with my library running rather low, I’ve taken to spinning 4 a week but giving you 2 songs from each artist on that show instead of 1 per.
*****
Feeling better physically these days and I was able to get both shows in without much difficulty, tho am still having to manage work stress. The job itself will last 4 more weeks as per my contract. Meanwhile, I’ll keep to my altered programming idea for RCB Novus Ordo so as to give you more music from artists that I’ve approved. I want to put the programming rules front and center here:
Keep physical packages of reasonable size and weight, as this is a
residence. Please indicate release date. No material released before May 2013
accepted. Material released before then will be added to RCB’s loose rotation instead.
Compilations or great concept albums, ones I can feature track-for-track,
are highly encouraged.
Digital albums are acceptable if media is not available in other formats.
Artists are also advised to add my email address to their general email
list.

EPK (those are what we call electronic press kits) submissions can be sent via one of these companies.

LIVE EVENT REVIEW:
I attended a showcase at The Fire, in Philadelphia on 3/4/14. My review of the event is at this link:

PHOTO album:

VIDEO of Tall Tall Trees (my first attempt at HD video with the new camera):

RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo: Already I’m up to the 3rd EP from the sisters von Grey, whom no doubt you’ve seen already on Letterman and Conan’s programs, and this very show before those major TV debuts. We also hear new music from The Portraits, easily the best and most consistent set of artists from outside North America in rotation here. As mentioned above, with the small library, I am spinning 2 songs per artist.

RCB proper: Segment 1: Jason Myles Goss & Arlan Feiles were part of The 9 Songwriter Series in NYC on 3/5. The 9, if my info is correct, is basically 9 songwriters doing 2 songs each. Debuted more new songs from Luke Dowler and Laura Berman. Red Molly covered 2 from Mark Erelli’s discography on their 2011 album “Light In The Sky”. Mark for a few shows becomes the ‘fourth Molly” for several shows later in March along with special guest status. Segment 2 includes more new music from Roi & The Secret People, and the red hot blues from the Halley DeVestern Band. Segment 3: Spun a brand new EP from Daniel Christian. I also have a new live album of his, but the CD broke at some point before I could air it. Hoping I can get this replaced! Loretta Hagen shared billing with Danielle Miraglia on 3/9 in Sharon MA. Coming up on 3/23, Loretta does likewise with The Levins at The Turning Point, Piermont NY. Segment 4: Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer return to the rotation, as Anais is now a mom, and back touring solo. A song from their “Child Ballads” album, won a BBC award. I also air new songs from Lowland Hum and Molasses Creek.

*****

Every so often I hear of another new or established program like myself in Philly take to bigger audiences in whatever way and actually reaching those masses and continue to market fairly well in this melting pot of a city. I keep thinking, why not me? Why can’t Radio Crystal Blue compete? Do I even want to compete?
The truth is, the money hasn’t been there for me to do marketing campaigns or logos or any such device to give this program a bigger and more ‘legitimate’ presence. Is my place in the music industry illegitimate then? I say no. Sure, I want a true studio presence. I want better organization of the music that comes in here. I wish I had more time to produce shows, to interview artists more, to review more shows. To take chances that represent the best of Radio Crystal Blue. Enough people know about this show. It’s existed for 13 years, all on the Web. That’s a big statement right here. I have built trust, and people trust in me and my message. Don’t I want to grow the show? Live events and such? Sure I do. I don’t know how, tho. I don’t know if I want to compete with other ‘radio’ programs. I wish that I would be the program that people turn to when there is new music by indie, underground and national touring acts. Not your commercial radio station. Not even your well-heeled podcasts. Not your online magazine either. I want Radio Crystal Blue to be first on your online block. Every 3 months I publish a chart that tells you who is getting the most airplay, the most exposure via my show. These are the names you will want to know about and listen to.
If I am ‘destined’ to be an alternative, fine. I believe that one commercial or alternative radio or TV presence should NOT, repeat, NOT, be the voice of a city. One or two music venues should NOT dictate what is legimitate music talent. I DO NOT support those companies and will never mention them. People, you have choices. The dive bars, the venues that don’t have the big marketing dollars, the radio stations with weaker signals (LP ones, and veteran podcasters that will ultimately represent the truth about what really is popular in music. We must stick together. And, together, we represent artists that you should pay attention to. Shows like Radio Crystal Blue will often spin music from artists that are local to an area as much as the nationally touring. Artists like Paige Allbritton here in Philly. Daniel Christian across Nebraska. The Modeens in Phoenix. Spanking Charlene in and around NYC. Who else is going to spin these artists on one program? Guarantee you there will be none besides me.
RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo: Checking in from Cleveland, Winslow is a 6-piece rock band with horns that brings a ton of soul. We hear more brand new music from Korea’s Love X Stereo..heavy on the synth (but do they call it K-pop?). I’m quite fond of this trio, and they’ll make their return to the US next month. Lowell Levinger, known as “Banana” from the 60’s band The Youngbloods (remember “Get Together”?) introduces an acoustic album, with special guests including Ry Cooder and David Grisman.

RCB proper: With the announcement of Joy Kills Sorrow’s breakup, I decided to give you a few songs from their 3-album repertoire. Hearing them for the first time back in 2005, I recognized something unique between the strong songwriting and all their stringed instruments. Something sophisticated as in classical, but also a sense of realism, much like what the genre of folk brings. And the approach musically reminded me just a bit of Sons Of The Never Wrong, and Crooked Still. The group will be missed. Segment 1: Kicked off with a song about Dale Earnhardt Jr from Chuck Schaeffer. And why not? Dale Jr. just won the Great American Race, the Daytona 500, last week. Loves It is a unique acoustic duo from Austin. Segment 2: How can I not spin something from Brother Joscephus the week before Mardi Gras? I actually spin a live track of theirs that’s available on their website. Von Shakes, a NYC/Dublin modern rock band whom I first saw in Philly last year, return to the rotation. Segment 3 includes music from Tall Tall Trees, whom I’m reviewing a show of later this week. Songs of devotion, of sorts, in this segment. I still get a kick out of Jill Cagney’s sarcastic song “If You Leave Me”. Segment 4 includes another new song from Paulo Franco and Shane Cooley. Stefilia’s Stone and Marci Geller share billing on 3/7 at The Buttonweed Tree in Middletown CT.

*****

There are a number of albums I have yet to review and also sort through before they get into rotation. I actually have few CDs left but that means I haven’t been busy checking in with those who send EPKs. I’ll make the time tonight to knock those out and meanwhile keep watch on those who are close to releasing new albums. Can you listeners be my ears and eyes and let me know what’s new that you’d like to hear?

The true place to start is with a REWIND of last week:
RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo debuted the newest alfbum from blues/rock veteran Halley DeVestern. Halley had received airplay from me since 2003, when “Superhero Killer” was released. The formula and the personnel have changed little since. Dirt Road Angels released a 15-song album as a debut. The 5 songwriters that make up this supergroup contribute 3 songs each. “Unsatisified” is by Dahlia Wakefield, whom I’ve aired music of once before. The man behind the Yahoo! yodel, Wylie Gustafson, has returned with his latest album, and a nod to older, classic country sounds. The vintage clip of Wylie teaching Conan O’Brien to yodel is not on Youtube but available as a WMV link on his own site, and it’s pretty amusing.

RCB proper: With Folk Alliance International’s large annual gathering taking place in Kansas City this past week, my task was to spin music from a number of artists playing there during the week. I gave you 2 full segments of music, the subjects all invited showcase artists. I spun 15 out of the dozens or so that were nominated. A few others were in the rotation itself. Graham Nash delivered the keynote address; I open this week’s show with a relatively seasonal choice, something from his 3-CD collection “Reflections”. Segment 1: Meg Braun and Elisa Peimer shared billing on February 21 at the Bronxville Women’s Club, Bronxville, NY. Carolann Solebello, The YaYas and Karyn Oliver make up the No Fuss And Feathers Roadshow, who tour March 7-9. Segment 2: Jim Patton & Sherry Brokus, Brian Kalinec, and Matt Harlan & The Sentimentals are part of the Arhaven House Concert series in Austin, March 9, just before SXSW. Segment 3: Jeff Campbell shares billing with songwriting partner Megan Slankard at Room 5 in Los Angeles on March 8. Jeff was part of a triple bill with Clarence Bucaro and Griffin House on February 23 in San Francisco. Tom Principato and Carsie Blanton were among 50 artists that were part of the Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival this past weekend, in PA.

Both shows were done with yours truly coughing and wheezing, with a decent voice but the head cold truly had its way with me. I fell sick on Monday amidst work stress. The situation took all week to improve. As I type this, I’m just beginning to find my strength again, and I’ve just about stopped sneezing, tho I’m about to trudge into work again, so we’ll see if I’m truly stronger. It wasn’t easy to edit the show after the fact, and that takes enough concentration by itself. The situation at work turned a better corner on Friday and things look even better as I type this on a Monday.

Received an insightful comment on the website about my description of genres, and folk in particular. Penny for your thoughts? Comment away.
