NEXT SHOW will be published on or about July 17 and will be available for
the rest of the year.
Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as
possible thereafter.
You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground
songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you  background info of each
artist.

At this moment I’ve yet to post a review of last night’s showcase at The Fire, featuring my friends in the NYC band At Sea.  This review will be available later on Friday on my website.  Look for photos on Facebook and video on my YouTube channel. You know where.

I do have a review up from a showcase at The Grape Room, dated 7/10/12.  Read all about it at https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/07/11/the-grape-room-71012/

I’m doing 6-song versions of RCB Novus Ordo this summer to further stimulate the wait list for CDs that are debuting on  my podcasts. Supply has dwindled, and there is probably a dozen artists I know of that have yet to send new material.

I’m seeking a day job in the areas of support/admin/clerical/research, within a 15 mile radius of Philadelphia.   Contact me if you know of a job that befits my requirements.

Thanks for being friends on the usual social media sites and beyond, and, of course, in person. I’ve no desire to set foot in NYC again unless I’m working there or else if my life depends on it.   I might try nearby cities (Baltimore, DC, hello?) for jobs if need be.  But I’d rather be in Philly for now, at least while I still have some $ to circulate.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows, not to be confused with the
actual audio:
RCB Novus Ordo: Outstanding in this week’s 6-pack are Late Cambrian (whose founder had also led The Flying Machines and The Attorneys), and DE rock band Darkin, bringing out the vintage grunge.

RCB proper: Continued a theme of starting with Luna for this week’s show, the long bonus track which is a Serge Gainsbourg cover. Laetitia Sadler of Stereolab in duet vox with Dean Wareham.  I had Serge on the brain after seeing a feature of the man on a public access TV program.  Summer and driving songs were the main part of Segment 1 (notably Amy Speace, Elisa Peimer, and another new one by Garrison Starr).   Segment 2 contained music by artists who are in this year’s Great South Bay Festival.  Yarn and Molasses Creek are in the Floyd Festival later in July.  Professor Louie & The Crowmatix are back with a new album and they kick off Segment 3, featuring guitar from Michael Falzarano.  Also spun more new music here from Changing Modes, This Is She (proud client of Miles High Productions) and brand new song from UK’s JoanOvArc.  Segment 4 featured the major performers of this year’s Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. I did not find a list of the emerging artists, otherwise this show would be a lot longer! And in this segment, more songs relevant to driving. New music here from Nerissa & Katryna Nields plus a reintroduction to Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer from the recently released Little Blue Egg CD.  Closing segment was songwriter oriented, with some fighting words in a few, gently easing out with a song by Ryan Tennis that captures summer very well.

Lots to look forward to this week as I will be making up for much lost time, attending 3 music events. I’ll do my best to cover these shows and review right on my website.
I was at an orientation at PhillyCAM.org tonight in Center City, exploring the wide world of public-access TV, and to see where I might fit in. Workshops are beginning in late summer, with some free workshops very soon to be announced. I am finding an inner note sounding when I think about working the equipment. I desire to be a filmmaker, taking some of the work and ideas I’ve done in the past (and present) and bridging them into this medium. I’d also, ideally, like to further my study into photography. Along with exploring the career of community media I’m continuing to seek work matching my varied background. Typing this, I’m reminded that I have 2 resumes that should be linked onto my site. I will figure out how to do this shortly. It goes on the list.
Not for nothing I was at the opening of the latest Shake Shack branch, as it debuted in Philly at Sansom and 20th. Photos of the experience and some landscape photos of the area at
I revived my online ‘paper’ at http://paper.li/radiocblue/1333586729 It’s a good read, generated by keywords of subjects that fascinate me most and also pulls in URL’s from my social media feeds.

I will be attending at least one more show before the end of the month.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Eric “Roscoe” Ambel and Phil Cimino help contribute to the roots rock sound of DL Marble. Venice Sunlight is an earnest, honest, enjoyable duo to listen for in Philly. Darius Lux brings the vintage R&B and the funk. Moot Davis and Penny Ney with some contemporary nods to classic country as well.

RCB proper: Segment 1 started off with Daniel Goodman and Paul Sachs, both of whom share gigs in NYC this week. Paul didn’t win at Kerrville for the New Folk competition; nevertheless you should hear this album “Oil Town” which continues to grow on me. Flo Anito, My Pet Dragon and Andy Hawk (and those Train Wreck Endings) are part of Celebrate Fairfax, June 8-10. Segment 2: Started a run of steampunk and modern folk. Spuyten Duyvil and Roosevelt Dime are part of XFEST in Telford PA on 6/9. Matt Turk, The Chapin Sisters, and Putnam Smith all perform at the Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival, the largest annual environmental celebration in the US. Matt’s tune is a Taj Mahal cover. Segment 3 includes another song from Ashley McBryde. It could just be my weathered radio ears, but her song “Whole Damn Thing” sounds an awful lot like Garrison Starr’s 90’s hit “Superhero”. Give a listen and compare. More songwriter fare in segment 4, featuring intimate songs from duos Adler & Hearne and Buskin & Batteau (listen for the warm Hammond). The Nields, sisters Nerissa and Katryna, have released a new album, which I debuted for you. It oriented segment 5 into songs about home. Continued the theme with the beloved Boxcar Lilies, who share personnel in Dave Chalfant. “Feels Like Home” is a Jenny Goodspeed composition. The Boxcar Lilies share stage with Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem, performing a benefit concert on 6/17 in Northampton MA. Piano and guitar fuel jazzy songs by both Jon Regen (busy touring in Europe) and Allison Scola. Allison performed at Caffe Vivaldi in NYC on June 6, her first solo show in 2 years. Spun another one from Marc Black’s latest CD. Closed with Beth DeSombre (Dave Chalfant on her album too) and Shanna Underwood, who are in the round with a new Kerrville New Folk winner, Alicia McGovern on 6/9 (tonite!) in Portland, ME.

CONNECTION: Aside to artists reading this missive: Is my email address on your general email list? I ask because I sometimes hear about artists who have shows and I don’t know about them via their emails until they are immediately ahead or after the fact. To a degree, I determine airplay on when artists announce their gigs and when the gigs occur, along with other news announcements. Be sure you have cblue456@comcast.net in your general (not localized) email list.

I want Radio Crystal Blue to be YOUR go-to freeform radio program.  Share my banner (which needs upgrading, I know), my links, my site, my blood type, what-have-you. Yes, I will link back.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.

RCB Novus Ordo: The superbly creative NYC songwriter Alec Berlin kicks off this show. Gavilan, a roots-rock band from Philly, also debuts here. Another favorite here is Jenn Rawling & Basho Parks.

RCB proper: With the volume of material for this week’s show I did 5 segments worth. Segment 1 begins with John Batdorf, who is one of the official showcase performers at the SERFA Folk Alliance conference 5/18-20. Two others with this honor were heard in this segment: Marc Black (with a new CD), Honor Finnegan, and Emily Pinkerton, whom I debut on RCB Novus Ordo two weeks back. Ben Knighten debuts a CD in this segment, and a similarly titled song by Larry Saklad follows. Segment 2: Starts bluesy and especially in the matter of stimulants (Jack Grace, Rod Piazza, Terry Hanck, Tony Mecca). The Way Home and Automatic Children perform at this weekend’s Elephants For Autism Festival at Le Grand Fromage in Atlantic City. Montauk Music Festival is this weekend too (now you see why this show was longer than most). Here I spun music of Remember September, My Pet Dragon, debut CD by Kevin McWha Steele, and Deborah Lombardi, all of whom will be part of the 4th annual festival there on Long Island. Bryan Dunn’s new CD debuts on this show as well. Got more songwriter-oriented in the latter stages of this week’s show. Paired up songs about rain (Cary Cooper, Sarah McQuaid), and songs making a NYC reference (Natalia Zukerman, and a new album by Garrison Starr. Garrison sings on Natalia’s song “Brooklyn”). Garrison once worked with producer/multi-instrumentalist Neilson Hubbard on her albums; Amy Speace has Neilson in the producer’s chair for last year’s CD “land like a bird”. Amy and Ernest Troost are performing at this weekend’s Wildflower Arts and Music Festival. Ernest himself is a finalist in the festival’s songwriting competition. Out of segment 5: Sharon Goldman and Loretta Hagen peforming at Barrington Coffee House on 5/19.
