@ Ortlieb’s Lounge 10/22/12

Granted, outside of the bands in Seattle I had worshiped, from Hendrix to Nirvana and beyond, I truly claim little knowledge of the music scene there. Last night I do believe I had such knowledge increase manifold, as I saw two bands from that city perform at Ortlieb’s Lounge in the Northern Liberties section. Two bands were touring together for the first time, and had been part of the CMJ Music Marathon experience.
Before both bands performed there was an appearance by local songwriter Anjuli Josephine, whom I had last seen with her band at The Fire this summer. She performed a 6-song solo acoustic set, plus one new song. Her voice is what drew me in all over again…languish, tempting, careful all at once, a bit like Ingrid Michaelson’s own style. Anjuli’s lyrics reveal something of herself as being vulnerable but a strength somewhere in there, masked well in her mid-range voice.
The Blakes are anchored in simple 4-4 drumming for the most part, featuring slick guitars and domineering echo-y vox that all the kids like. One song had a ‘hey’ chant between verses. Most of their songs have a danceable groove which could have been lifted from an early Kinks songbook, or perhaps the fun indie style of The Strokes.
Snow Keim, lead guitarist and principal vocalist for The Blakes, chatted with me before the gig, talking about Seattle’s present scene. Their CMJ experience included shows at Cake Shop and Santos Party House among the five they played this past week. With 9 years together in the current formation, The Blakes present great vocal harmonies and a willingness to groove. They had released 5 proper full-length albums. Further, they showed off an older one to me that got quotes from luminaries no less than SPIN Magazine and Iggy Pop.
The Young Evils are five strong, with 2 lead guitars in Troy Nelson and Cody Hurd, vocalist Mackenzie Mercer, bassist Michael Lee, and drummer Eric Wennberg. When not touring with the band, Troy is DJ for tastemaker Seattle radio station KEXP. Their songs are equal elements of 80’s-90’s indie rock and 70’s power pop. The small audience enjoyed the accessible song “Dead Animals” along with a song that included handclaps in the verses (this might have been “Darker Blue Bayou”). The band kept to a strong uptempo groove. They also were big on the duel harmonies with a bit of solo on guitar. One could hear dark undertones in the sound. Each band member were comfortable in their stage presence. Michael in particular angled his bass like a protruding trident, dueling with Eric, while the 2 main guitarists were side-by-side. On the last song they truly tore it up with a punk-tinged number. Most of the songs check in at around 3 minutes in length. And before we knew it, the set was over. They had CDs and precious limited edition vinyl for sale (500 or so, which indeed is limited). Talking with them afterward, while enduring some old Joe Walsh and Stones songs overhead, Mackenzie tells me the band was seeking a cheap room in the city to stay in, and also were taking a pilgrimage to South Street and Jim’s Steaks. They also planned to find evidence of Toynbee tiles,  a  particular type of street art, whose story has been made into a film.
During the set i met an older gent, Greg Dear, who was in a band called L.S. Wilkinson many moons ago (don’t look for it; you won’t find it) , and does freelance reports and reviews of live events in Seattle. He is a fan of both bands and was in town this week for a relative’s wedding. He also is quite enamored with whatever projects Scott McCaughey is up to; also a band called Manooghi Hi, who have the Seattle rock sound plus Indian polyrhythms.
I had 2 soft standard tacos with just the right amount of spice, plus a Yards, for $4. Such is happy hour here!
I wish there had a bigger audience to enjoy the energy of the music, for both The Blakes and The Young Evils have a sound that’s radio-friendly along with being danceable. As I type this, I instantly recall the oft-quoted remark from “American Bandstand”: “It’s got a good beat, and I can dance to it”.  They have announced shows right through Halloween night, with gigs across the East Coast and then halfway home, stopping in Chicago.for a few media appearances.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about October 24 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as
possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground
songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
For the next several weeks I’ll be featuring a Nanci Griffith tribute album released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at: www.paradiddlemusic.com www.maginternational.org

Camera is back, all shiny and new, and totally worth the $32 plus round-trip bus to get to NYC and back. Yes, I trudged to Union Square, did a fair amount of walking, and caught my NYC stride without missing a beat. I put said camera to good use on 10/16 seeing 2 bands at The Grape Room. More on this event at my website, right about here: https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/10/17/the-grape-room-101612/

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Kicking off this edition is music from Tora (Fisher), with a most unique
view on songwriting from the heart. We Are The Woods resurfaces with a slightly different lineup but continues blazing musical trails. Marci Geller is a Long Island NY artist with Vance Gilbert doing backing vocals on the song I spun “No Weather Down”

RCB proper: Even before programming this week’s show I knew that it would be full with music by artists who are participating at FAR-West this week…the Western states region of Folk Alliance International. Included within 2 segments worth is new music by Nels Andrews (in the same company of friends like AJ Roach, Raina Rose, et al.), and more new songs by Severin Browne and Chico Schwall. Severin’s tune “To The Light” has co-writing credit with veteran bassist/songwriter Freebo, also part of this special pair of segments. The K’s are breaking up, and for certain. I had followed their career since they began their initial radio campaign in 2005 and it was back in 2006 I had first given airplay to the first of their three albums. I will miss them. There was death and some elements of doom and gloom that came through the lyrics. Some of it happened in real life to them as well. That’s why I spun the songs I chose this week. From the standard segments: Tania & The Revolutionaries will release a new EP soon. Jeneen Terrana & Amateur Blonde share a bill 10/19 in NYC, part of the big CMJ experience. Hudson K & Avi Wisnia likewise with a CMJ show. Gave you some blues/rockabilly in my 2nd proper segment (Brother Joscephus, Vintage Blue, Voodoo Swing, Zac Mac Band). Patti DeRosa shares bills in the next month with Daphne Lee Martin & Beth DeSombre. I had built a whole segment around Rebecca Loebe, who also releases new material. She shares a bill on 10/20 wtih Curtis Becraft and Fred Gillen Jr, and later into November with Jesse Terry and Sarah Blacker (the latter two with new music). Final segment includes new music from Beaucoup Blue (who I saw earlier in October).Honor Finnegan and Anna Dagmar share billing on 11/3. This segment also has songs that feature danger, hope, longing for ease.

@ The Grape Room 10/16/12

Earlier on Tuesday I traveled to NYC to get my point-and-shoot camera to get a general cleaning and to replace a battery door. The work took all of 10 minutes. Photogs, if you want solid service, please patronize the good folks at PhotoTech in Union Square.
Having mucho time to kill before my Megabus ride back to the Illadelph, I did a lot of walking, along with window shopping between Union Sq and Herald Sq. It didn’t take long for me to get my NY walking stride going, instincts fully in street-smart mode.
Suffice to say I almost couldn’t tend Tuesday’s show, had I not had the healed camera in my clutches. But the Fujifilm camera is just fine, and works like new. I was in attendance to see Brooklyn’s Freddy Hall & The Best Intentions, along with Denver’s Flashbulb Fires. There was a rather small but eager cheering section for both bands. Freddy is a young, humble songwriter with a Zen attitude to music. He’s equally capable of a an acoustic folk-rock Dave Matthews-like tune, and then turn the song inside out and bring in some audial pyrotechnics. Freddy’s guitar is versatile, between ripping up chords and being poignant on acoustic, changing moods within a song. He sports a clever use of words and lyrics, and a bit entertaining with the stage banter. Their drummer Marques Walls was particuarly hard hitting, and added occasional percussion with most of the song. Their bassist (name unknown to me at this moment) wailed away alongside through the show. Their next show is at Bar Matchless (whose performance space closely resembles The Fire here in Philly) is on 10/21, just after the CMJ Marathon madness.

Flashbulb Fires, like Freddy and the band, are a trio who are on a cross-country tour; they started this tour in Lincoln NE on 10/10. Their  CMJ gig is at the venerable Rockwood Music Hallon 10/20. The trio are Patrick on synth, Michael on lead guitar and Chris on drums. They kept the instrumentation relatively sparse but one wonders how they actually conceived and produced such amazing beautiful noisy sound for studio and on stage. I did spot an large aluminum pan between Michael’s stomp boxes, which he did use as extra sneaky percussion. I was immediately reminded of shoegaze types, those with a minimal of haunting words and a lot of strong chords and arpeggios plus a bit of electronics but not overpowering or taken away from Chris’s own strength there. Michael would bend forward at times getting into the music, Patrick would gesture with hands and slight wails as he involved himself at the lead. The synth was magical with a church-like Rhodes sound, and other times resembling Mark’s own guitar. There needed to be more of a light show with their presentation but they had plenty on stage, what with an amp decked out in Patrick’s synth whose front was covered in dark curtain and more flashbulbs.

Before leaving for the bus back to the civilization that is South Philly, I picked up CDs from both bands, plus a free one by local outfit The Defog, a rather conceptual, experimental band that had performed at The Grape Room on 10/6. Near the stack of CDs was a sports cap plus a sticky from an event promoter inquiring about gigs.
I had to dodge various wandering happy drunks on Manayunk’s Main Street. Is it a class thing? The idea that the higher in social class you are, the wilder and happier drunk you become? That’s how it appears to go in Manayunk.

Lots more photos on my Facebook gallery.
