NEXT SHOW will be published on or about December 12 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
Each week through my January shows I’m airing tracks from The 1861 Project,
a series that touches upon the Civil War experience. We’re up to Volume 2:
From The Famine To The Front. This collection of original music recalls
those families with Scottish and Irish ties who fought in the war. From the
liner notes “Every singer, player and writer on this album has a strong
connection to Ireland, by ancestry, birth, or just by heart”. More about
this fascinating series at www.1861project.com

Also: Another NEW MUSIC SAMPLER will be heard. Initially I had felt this would be a one-time revival. But I’ve decided to reintroduce the segment on demand whenever I feel the need to add some extra programming on a show that might seem unusually short compared to others. This segment will definitely not air the week of 12/16.

I’m just about at my limit with accepting HOLIDAY music for the final show
of the year, the week of 12/16. Thanks to everyone that submitted and
suggested tunes!

I’ve begun attending a course in Final Cut Pro 7 at PhillyCAM, the
public-access network which I’m a member of. I’ve already completed courses
in production editing and management. So I can now freely borrow field
equipment for use around the city. I’m pretty excited about this. Now I want
to get involved in productions by other members, and eventually muster up
courage to follow-through on one of two project ideas I have sketched out.

RCB REVIEW from this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: Long Island NY’s Revel 9 (formerly Gee Davey) have resurfaced with a harder, edgier sound. Galen Curry from Michigan delights with his own brand of love songs. The song “Last Man Alive” includes a kazoo solo. Beth Whitney’s tune “Seattle Rain” sounds like a cafe/coffeehouse favorite.

RCB proper:

Segment 1 includes brand new music from Shane Cooley, who is now focusing on duo gigs with Rosa Wallace. Inside this week’s New Music Sampler are The Blakes and The Young Evils, two touring bands from Seattle who played here in Philly a few months ago. “Dead Animals” by the latter is a very catchy song. Segment 2: Included another recent released song from NYC’s Downward Dogs and Spanking Charlene. Segment 3: One word personal subjects color this one (Dan May, Joy Kills Sorrow, Carolann Solebello). Carolann, with Meg Braun, perform December 9th, at the First Unitarian Church in Brooklyn NY. New Music Sampler #2 introduces us to veteran songwriter Jimmy LaFave among others. Final segment includes brand new music from mystical songwriter Cosby Gibson.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
For this and the next several weeks I am bfeaturing a Nanci Griffith tribute album
released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The
Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from
artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also
contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album
benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at:
www.paradiddlemusic.com www.maginternational.org

NON-PROGRAMMING NOTE: In past years I’ve done a loose Halloween and end-of-October flavored show. I want to continue the tradition this year, but I had not requested any holiday songs for the upcoming show. I will likely choose appropo songs from the rotation of albums I have and use them as extra segments. If you or an artist would like to suggest holiday songs, please suggest/submit by Tuesday 10/30. I plan to determine airplay for the next show sometime tonight outside of these extra songs.
NEW addition to the submission process: This week, Radio Crystal Blue became an affiliate of MusicClout, a site that provides services and
industry-related opportunities for musicians all across the world. I have a page on the website to receive submissions from at www.musicclout.comhttps://musicclout.com/contents/opportunity-1438-radio-crystal-blue-seeking-new-music-for-airplay.aspx
I have 2 more weeks with the classes at PhillyCAM, the city’s public-access cable network. It’s going fairly well, as I’m learning about lighting, cameras, action (even took starring role in our class production). Next I think we’re learning about Final Cut Pro and all things editing. Exam in 2 weeks as well.
Handicapping gains a presence in my life next weekend as the big Breeders Cup races are upon us. I tend to do my best work in the biggest events, so I’ll be relatively silent while I have my focus there. Follow my weekly Saturday selections at www.cblue456.tumblr.com******

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo:

Best music from this edition includes a band from The Netherlands called Vast Countenance, also John Orsi of It’s Twilight Time, who presents experimental music.Russ Seeger, whose album is on the aforementioned Paradiddle Records, debuts here. Jeff Brown with some solid songwriting in his tune “Rain” that ends this show.
RCB proper: Gabrielle Roth had been a presence on this program since about 2005 upon my receiving her prior CD effort “Still Chillin’ “. I don’t quite recall how our paths linked, except that I had a contact from Valley Entertainment, the record label addition to the long-running syndicated radio program “Hearts Of Space”. That particular program, which I recommend to all of you, has served as a mild influence to my show. At some point, Gabrielle’s people sent me her dance/trance album. This and it’s follow-up, which became her last full-length album, often were used as intro and outro music to both RCB and RCB Novus Ordo. So, it can be said: Gabrielle is still. At the same time, that soul is freed. I never knew her, but I will miss her. Onward….
Gabrielle’s music figured in the intro and outro of this week’s programs as well, with selections I hadn’t spun before. First segment for this show was songwriter-oriented, speaking on love’s complications (Daniel Goodman’s tune here especially in focus, amidst the cold weather upon us). Segment 2: The Steel Wheels and The Waybacks (long time no spin!) are performing at the Riverhawk Festival in early November, in Brooksville, FL. We hear another new song by These City Limits also. The Nanci Griffith tribute CD kicks off with Sara Hickman, the Official State Musician of Texas for 2010-11. The Kennedys, Pete & Maura, produced this entire album, and they are heard on several songs as well. Segment 3: Hungrytown and Gregory Douglass. Doesn’t exactly fit as a segue, but I say it does. Why? They share billing at someplace called Rockwood Music Hall, 10/28. Final segment was rather reflective, especially with the timely “Late October”; this is from a collection of piano instrumentals by Heather Pierson. As you know, Danielle Miraglia and Katie Barbato share billing at Sine Studios in Philly on 10/3. Further, Danielle and Craig Bickhardt are sharing billing on 11/4 and 11/11. Katie and Craig and other songwriters perform at the Heart Strings Music Festival on 10/27, with proceeds to create the Heart Strings Scholarship for the Variety Club Children’s Charity.

@ Ortlieb’s Lounge 10/22/12

Granted, outside of the bands in Seattle I had worshiped, from Hendrix to Nirvana and beyond, I truly claim little knowledge of the music scene there. Last night I do believe I had such knowledge increase manifold, as I saw two bands from that city perform at Ortlieb’s Lounge in the Northern Liberties section. Two bands were touring together for the first time, and had been part of the CMJ Music Marathon experience.
Before both bands performed there was an appearance by local songwriter Anjuli Josephine, whom I had last seen with her band at The Fire this summer. She performed a 6-song solo acoustic set, plus one new song. Her voice is what drew me in all over again…languish, tempting, careful all at once, a bit like Ingrid Michaelson’s own style. Anjuli’s lyrics reveal something of herself as being vulnerable but a strength somewhere in there, masked well in her mid-range voice.
The Blakes are anchored in simple 4-4 drumming for the most part, featuring slick guitars and domineering echo-y vox that all the kids like. One song had a ‘hey’ chant between verses. Most of their songs have a danceable groove which could have been lifted from an early Kinks songbook, or perhaps the fun indie style of The Strokes.
Snow Keim, lead guitarist and principal vocalist for The Blakes, chatted with me before the gig, talking about Seattle’s present scene. Their CMJ experience included shows at Cake Shop and Santos Party House among the five they played this past week. With 9 years together in the current formation, The Blakes present great vocal harmonies and a willingness to groove. They had released 5 proper full-length albums. Further, they showed off an older one to me that got quotes from luminaries no less than SPIN Magazine and Iggy Pop.
The Young Evils are five strong, with 2 lead guitars in Troy Nelson and Cody Hurd, vocalist Mackenzie Mercer, bassist Michael Lee, and drummer Eric Wennberg. When not touring with the band, Troy is DJ for tastemaker Seattle radio station KEXP. Their songs are equal elements of 80’s-90’s indie rock and 70’s power pop. The small audience enjoyed the accessible song “Dead Animals” along with a song that included handclaps in the verses (this might have been “Darker Blue Bayou”). The band kept to a strong uptempo groove. They also were big on the duel harmonies with a bit of solo on guitar. One could hear dark undertones in the sound. Each band member were comfortable in their stage presence. Michael in particular angled his bass like a protruding trident, dueling with Eric, while the 2 main guitarists were side-by-side. On the last song they truly tore it up with a punk-tinged number. Most of the songs check in at around 3 minutes in length. And before we knew it, the set was over. They had CDs and precious limited edition vinyl for sale (500 or so, which indeed is limited). Talking with them afterward, while enduring some old Joe Walsh and Stones songs overhead, Mackenzie tells me the band was seeking a cheap room in the city to stay in, and also were taking a pilgrimage to South Street and Jim’s Steaks. They also planned to find evidence of Toynbee tiles,  a  particular type of street art, whose story has been made into a film.
During the set i met an older gent, Greg Dear, who was in a band called L.S. Wilkinson many moons ago (don’t look for it; you won’t find it) , and does freelance reports and reviews of live events in Seattle. He is a fan of both bands and was in town this week for a relative’s wedding. He also is quite enamored with whatever projects Scott McCaughey is up to; also a band called Manooghi Hi, who have the Seattle rock sound plus Indian polyrhythms.
I had 2 soft standard tacos with just the right amount of spice, plus a Yards, for $4. Such is happy hour here!
I wish there had a bigger audience to enjoy the energy of the music, for both The Blakes and The Young Evils have a sound that’s radio-friendly along with being danceable. As I type this, I instantly recall the oft-quoted remark from “American Bandstand”: “It’s got a good beat, and I can dance to it”.  They have announced shows right through Halloween night, with gigs across the East Coast and then halfway home, stopping in Chicago.for a few media appearances.

Lots more photos at my latest Facebook gallery.
