NEXT SHOW will be published on or about October 31 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
For this and the next several weeks I am bfeaturing a Nanci Griffith tribute album
released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The
Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from
artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also
contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album
benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at:
www.paradiddlemusic.com www.maginternational.org

NON-PROGRAMMING NOTE: In past years I’ve done a loose Halloween and end-of-October flavored show. I want to continue the tradition this year, but I had not requested any holiday songs for the upcoming show. I will likely choose appropo songs from the rotation of albums I have and use them as extra segments. If you or an artist would like to suggest holiday songs, please suggest/submit by Tuesday 10/30. I plan to determine airplay for the next show sometime tonight outside of these extra songs.
NEW addition to the submission process: This week, Radio Crystal Blue became an affiliate of MusicClout, a site that provides services and
industry-related opportunities for musicians all across the world. I have a page on the website to receive submissions from at www.musicclout.comhttps://musicclout.com/contents/opportunity-1438-radio-crystal-blue-seeking-new-music-for-airplay.aspx
I have 2 more weeks with the classes at PhillyCAM, the city’s public-access cable network. It’s going fairly well, as I’m learning about lighting, cameras, action (even took starring role in our class production). Next I think we’re learning about Final Cut Pro and all things editing. Exam in 2 weeks as well.
Handicapping gains a presence in my life next weekend as the big Breeders Cup races are upon us. I tend to do my best work in the biggest events, so I’ll be relatively silent while I have my focus there. Follow my weekly Saturday selections at www.cblue456.tumblr.com******

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo:

Best music from this edition includes a band from The Netherlands called Vast Countenance, also John Orsi of It’s Twilight Time, who presents experimental music.Russ Seeger, whose album is on the aforementioned Paradiddle Records, debuts here. Jeff Brown with some solid songwriting in his tune “Rain” that ends this show.
RCB proper: Gabrielle Roth had been a presence on this program since about 2005 upon my receiving her prior CD effort “Still Chillin’ “. I don’t quite recall how our paths linked, except that I had a contact from Valley Entertainment, the record label addition to the long-running syndicated radio program “Hearts Of Space”. That particular program, which I recommend to all of you, has served as a mild influence to my show. At some point, Gabrielle’s people sent me her dance/trance album. This and it’s follow-up, which became her last full-length album, often were used as intro and outro music to both RCB and RCB Novus Ordo. So, it can be said: Gabrielle is still. At the same time, that soul is freed. I never knew her, but I will miss her. Onward….
Gabrielle’s music figured in the intro and outro of this week’s programs as well, with selections I hadn’t spun before. First segment for this show was songwriter-oriented, speaking on love’s complications (Daniel Goodman’s tune here especially in focus, amidst the cold weather upon us). Segment 2: The Steel Wheels and The Waybacks (long time no spin!) are performing at the Riverhawk Festival in early November, in Brooksville, FL. We hear another new song by These City Limits also. The Nanci Griffith tribute CD kicks off with Sara Hickman, the Official State Musician of Texas for 2010-11. The Kennedys, Pete & Maura, produced this entire album, and they are heard on several songs as well. Segment 3: Hungrytown and Gregory Douglass. Doesn’t exactly fit as a segue, but I say it does. Why? They share billing at someplace called Rockwood Music Hall, 10/28. Final segment was rather reflective, especially with the timely “Late October”; this is from a collection of piano instrumentals by Heather Pierson. As you know, Danielle Miraglia and Katie Barbato share billing at Sine Studios in Philly on 10/3. Further, Danielle and Craig Bickhardt are sharing billing on 11/4 and 11/11. Katie and Craig and other songwriters perform at the Heart Strings Music Festival on 10/27, with proceeds to create the Heart Strings Scholarship for the Variety Club Children’s Charity.

I am into the 2nd week of courses at PhillyCAM and enjoying both the challenge and process of learning video equipment and how to build a show on the city’s public-access channel. One class finishes next week, and the other in 3 weeks time.
As a last minute decision, I decided to check out Beaucoup Blue at Ortlieb’s Lounge in Northern Liberties on 10/6. This venue has reopened under this title and was previously known as Jazzhaus. It was my first chance to see the father-son duo in over a year. My review of this show is at https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/10/07/ortliebs-lounge-10612/

On 10/11 I was in attendance at Milkboy Coffee’s Center City locale once again, enjoying the music of The Way Home, Food Will Win The War, and The City and Horses, along with West Philly’s own On The Water. Review has just been posted to the site and you may read it at

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Bobtown and Jesse Terry both highlights this edition; the former a folk ensemble, the latter an award winning songwriter. You’ll also enjoy hearing the space rock of The Boxing Lesson and roots rock from Interstate Buffalo.

RCB proper: A technical issue caused to re-record the entire show from scratch. I still managed to deliver the show on Wednesday as usual. Once again I began with Pamela Wyn Shannon’s acclaimed and limited edition album “Courting Autumn”. First segment includes touring songwriters Ellis and Meghan Cary, plus Nerissa & Katryna Nields who formally release their new CD this week. There’s a line in the song “Back At The Fruit Tree” that cites the month of October. Yes, you did hear more about space dinosaurs and more of the story (and backstory) from MJ Hibbett & The Validators. Segment 2 was much more uptempo. Spun more new music here from Add Moss and EndAnd (the latter’s EP is slightly deceptive in description, as there are multiple titles for different songs. Most songs in this segment were somewhat dark. Segment 3:Chuck Schaeffer introduced here with the title track, a Craig Bickhardt cover. I stayed along the lines of pedal steel to present Marc Berger and Sam Otis Hill (complete with Sam’s take on elections). Lily Wilson and Mare Wakefield take part in a songwriter in-the-round at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles, 10/24. Final segment: The pride of Ocracoke Island, NC, Molasses Creek kicks off with a medley penned by Fiddler Dave Tweedie: “Scat Reel/Charles In Jeopardy, First Day Of School”. Two songs of similar vibe closes us out from Craig Sonnenfeld and Lynn Hollyfield.

TWITTER FIVE TO FOLLOW: These are the last 5 folks that I’m following who
follow back:

****************
I felt a real sense of outspokenness this week, and vented the old spleen in my kindest and most heartfelt way. I normally hold back, but this time around I decided to just let it all out. I didn’t care as to who would reply or how. I think the catalyst was actually having a temp gig which lasted all of 2 days, where my mind and heart did a 180-degree turn. I felt my intense sensitivity and at once the willingness to express it.
Not a day goes back where, at least in the online world, I touch minds, hearts, and funny bones. I recall the late Jim Valvano’s last public appearance, at the ESPY Awards, March 1993. This quote gets to me: “If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”
This isn’t a personal credo for me, but I find myself often either in thought, or emotionally aware of something in myself or others, and often come up with something so funny to me, that it registers just as funny to someone else. The trick is conveying those feelings, thoughts, and magic when typing it on Facebook, or Twitter, or…even, yes… on Radio Crystal Blue. I do more than just spin songs. I share some personal thoughts, some anecdotes, some scenes from my life (tho I will often hide specifics to protect the guilty), and just be real.
So, I further encourage you to listen to my show, and in the words of Philly legend Bill Cosby “…and if you’re not careful, you may learn something before it’s done.”

INTERVIEW:
The veteran Colorado-based songwriter/bandleader Chris Daniels chatted with yours truly on September 10th, via Skype. Chris and I talked about his band, the Kings, a bit about life, health, politics, and other matters. The interview went about 40 minutes and it was just awesome to hear his stories, including the making of his first solo album “Better Days”. Chris pretty much predates the Colorado music scene proper. You can hear this interview at my ‘field recording’ FeedPlayer, accessible in the same manner you can hear Radio Crystal Blue, tho at a slightly different locale: http://www.bigcontact.com/radiocrystalbluefield This player is also available through my website, and you can stream, share and download the audio from this and other interviews.

9/15: Lotus Hill releases a new CD at Milkboy’s Center City locale.

10/11 Blag’ard, a classic rock duo from NC, play at JR’s Bar, not far from yours truly in South Philly

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Standout out tunes from this edition include roots rockers Cletus Romp from Cincinnati, uptempo rock from upstate NY’s Oxford Train, and lovely Brazilian music from Carla Hassett.

RCB proper: Second consecutive week I begin with Pamela Wyn Shannon’s music, digging into her 2007 release “Couring Autumn”. Segment 1 includes contemporary songwriters. Meghan Cary, Craig Sonnenfeld and Elaine Romanelli, spun consecutively, perform at the Haverford (PA) Music Festival 9/15. Segment 2 gives us blues (Bob Corritore, Rod Piazza & The All Mighty Flyers heard here; Bob guests on his birthday with Rod’s band 9/29). Shupikai is a jazz/blues instrumental project led by NYC’s Bob Petrocelli. The transition to louder rock came easy as I spun another by The Trapps, plus music by ‘glamwave’ duo Girls On Film (yes, they love all things Duran),and a newer tune by NYC’s PaperDoll. Segment 3: Justin Roth, The Steel Wheels, and John McCutcheon performed at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield KS on 9/13. McCutcheon’s CD is homage to Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday. Blue Coin have an intriguing folk sound, somewhat spacey tune spun here. Sam Otis Hill & Co., Greg Klyma & Sarah Blacker, perform at the New England Americana Festival at the sainted Club Passim, 9/15. Sarah’s tune is the title track of her new EP. Segment 4: Avi Wisnia & Arlan Feiles performed at Milkboy Coffee’s Center City location on 9/12 for the latest installment of The 9…9 songwriters on one bill doing 3 songs each. I just had to spin Aztec Two-Step’s ode to Olga Korbut and the remembrance of dark days on what’s been 40 years since the Black September incident in Munich. Songs of healing and hope close this out: Red Molly with one of Molly Venter’s own songs, and a live recording of Craig Bickhardt (Sellersville Theater, Sellersville, PA).
