Radio Crystal Blue is my pride and joy and it’s a true joy to receive both from those of you within the music industry along with the common listeners. I don’t know what I’d do without this major creative…er…snowball. What else do I call it? It’s gained momentum from its earliest days, strengthened by people that many of you probably don’t know. I’m speaking about radio promoters like Lisa Grey, Tracey Delfino, Jenni Finlay, Erik Balkey, Chip Schutzman, Mike Farley, along with artist managers from just about everywhere. Their clients and their music strongly fuel the content of Radio Crystal Blue. Once in a while, they publicize my own efforts. This very show is the subject of a press release by Trespass Music, based at Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Read the full story here http://www.trespassmusic.org/2014/01/03/rcb100/

Via Twitter, the word came mid-afternoon on December 26 that Aztec Two Step, the 40-year-running duo of Rex Fowler and Neal Schulman, won the Artist of the Year title. They had been leaders in the 2nd quarter and always near the top in the other 3 quarters. Tom Principato had one of the better EPs and ranked high in the 2nd half. Davey O received the Best New Artist title. The Steel Wheels won for Best Album, while Long Island’s Aqua Cherry scored the Best EP title. An easy choice for Best Concept/Compilation came from Reimagine Music, with homage to Jack Kerouac’s novel “Tristessa”. In particular “She Has To Come Down”, by Peter Bradley Adams is magnificent. In a snap decision before compiling chart results, I opted to change the all-time rankings…having ignored all but the top 25 of the annual charts in the last 11 years the charts were compiled, and determined rank by who had the highest cumulative rank score across the years. I also took artists off the list who have not received airplay in years. Sirsy, the amazing duo from upper NY state, have gained the #1 ranking all-time, usurping Natalia Zukerman. The big chart page with this year’s results and a snapshot look at award winners from prior years, are at http://www.radiocrystalblue.net/chart-page

Outside of radio briefly, I’m still interviewing occasionally, often having to do so outside the city simply to find more opportunity. Recently I came into extra money via a sports contest, and that will help keep me afloat another month or so. There is always the threat of eviction, tho I have no plans to go through that situation anytime soon.
I also lost a number of personal items this past week, including my debit card. A bill for my website is due and I won’t be able to upload any files to the server until the bill is paid. Hopefully I will have the card in my hands by Thursday, which is a fair amount of time to get a show in anyway. Don’t expect me to have the podcasts ready before then.

I’m also blogging again via my sports/stats site http://www.idealistic.wordpress.com I present my thoughts on different sports, usually about money, the Internet watching experience (I’ve no TV), and my own, yes, idealistic viewpoint about how sports really should be. I will post a general series of thoughts a bit later on Sunday (today, that is)
Oh, I also wrote a poem, with a melody and instruments in my head. It was inspired by some drama on the homefront, some aspects of which were too close to my heart and sense of common sense not to spew about on social media or elsewhere. I still feel there is an injustice about it all. That was the impetus to write. And sometimes I write and type in a certain poeticness. I may not win the battle but at least something creative comes from it. When am I publishing it? Maybe later this week.

Radio Crystal Blue chart update

The names read like indie royalty:
Amy Speace
Nadine Goellner
Jenn Lindsay
Rachael Sage
Vance Gilbert
Mark Erelli
Natalia Zukerman
Andy Friedman
Hungrytown

Each of these artists have received my year-end #1 ranking as top artist from Radio Crystal Blue over the past 10 years. Every year I publish the top 100, and similar lists that include top albums, and top industry names associated with these as well. I also had published an all-time RCB list, based on the cumulative scores of rank from year to year. As I type this, I am strongly considering redoing the aspects of this chart, and also eliminating those whom I’ve lost touch with or otherwise haven’t appeared on my show in over a year.
With that, the announcement for the 2013 titles are most interesting. I’m just putting the finishing touches on the quarterly charts, which will set in place its companion charts, and will be set to publish. But first……

The big event this week is not a podcast but a Twitter event! On December 26, noon ET, I will gently invade your Twitter timelines, and present, one by one, the top 100 artists of 2013. Use the hashtag #rcbtop100 if you want to get in on the chat and guess whom will be #1 this year.
Note that the chart page is updated as of October: www.radiocrystalblue.net/chart-page The page is set to be redone the moment the countdown is unveiled to the world via Twitter. Those of you on Facebook will likely get the syndicate feed as my posts on Twitter do synchronize there. Also, if you see the Fall 2013 quarterly chart, I indicate the ten artists who are mathematically eligible to win this year. So…from those ten, can you guess who will win? The answer really depends on how well you listen to my podcasts and track who is getting more airplay and exposure.

So…..I’ve a lot to do before the big announcement, and that also includes getting some more of my finances in order. I’m still afloat tho I’ve really no extra $ to do any social events. That’s why I haven’t done any reviews of live events in a very long while. My plan is to work and earn enough to pay the bills, plus have extra so that I can cover events, plus feed into the vision I posted the link of earlier.
RCB REWIND:

RCB proper: A number of artists sent great new and recent holiday tunes and I thank each of them for doing so! Along with these I included some classic and irreverent holiday tunes, plus the penultimate segment, where I shared, once again, my ideal holiday songs. Also part of the RCB tradition is to recite Jack Kerouac’s ‘Home For Christmas’, with the setting being Jack’s boyhood home of Lowell MA. Brand new and original holiday tunes courtesy of: Antigone Rising, Calico (Manda Mosher in this California folk-rock trio), Ronnie Fauss, Margo Rey (an MHP client), and Ian McGlynn. Larry Saklad, a member of Alan Mann’s Free Arts Band in the 80s, mixed an updated version of the recent classic “Christmas On The Block”
