Red Molly took the top spot in the quarterly Radio Crystal Blue airplay chart. I measure artists based on progressive amounts of airplay and exposure in 3 month and 12 month periods. That is to say, artists receiving more airplay in the last 3 months as opposed to more a year ago get higher marks. About 25 artists have now appeared on both 2012 quarterly charts, and so they are most likely to win the Artist of The Year title at the end of the year. Full chart at www.radiocrystalblue.net I don’t have a proper template to display a table with my free WordPress account so the page does look a bit ‘off’.

I attended the Midsommar Day celebration at the Swedish American museum close to home in South Philly. Lots of good food and Swedish music filled the afternoon. I’m one-fourth Swedish-American, tho most of the customs from the homeland were left behind there when my great-grandmom’s family emigrated to New England and thence to NYC. With a hearty dose of smorgastotar and Bordeaux I took in most of the celebration, inclduing singing in Swedish. Not as easy as I thought it would be! But fun? Oh yes.

Last night I was at the nearby Italian Market to lose myself in the masses of locals sampling all sorts of food (mainly Mexican, Vietnamese, Italian and the classic summer treats). I also hung out at the Ellsworth Street stage to see The Discount Heroes, with members that own Connie’s Ric-Rac, within the vicinity of the big Night Market Philly event.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Among the standout tracks from this edition is Annie Gallup’s “Poets”, spoken-word with programming filling out the background. Joy Mills (The Starlings) embarks on her first solo album. A return to RCB airwaves by Tall Tall Trees. The Harmonious Five, a quartet (!) with mucho live performance experience, present rare oldies gems. I included one by Andre Williams that I guarantee you never heard before, original or cover.

RCB proper: Longest show in terms of songs spun this year. The collection of festival gigs in the near future seems to be the big influence. I certainly don’t mind, so long as I know you’re listening. Even better, if you’re attending a few of the shows that I mention with the airplay. Segment 1 includes a new song by Jessie Kilguss & Radio Gold, along with Justin Levinson & The Valcours. Mood was rather sunshiny for this segment. 2nd segment focused on artists performing the New Bedford (MA) Summerfest. Mood here went from dreams to alcohol (and morphine, as Peter Mulvey sings a Jolie Holland cover). Then a rather long segment which I divided into 2 on paper but actually it was one segment. 4 artists sharing bills and festival duties, all in Canada (Calgary Stampede, Ottawa Bluesfest in particular). Then the Caramoor American Roots Festival was in focus in the next segment. Segment 4 includes a new song from a new EP by Churchill. My Pet Dragon, Vintage Blue and Avi Wisnia all perform at the Milwaukee Summerfest on 7/6. Segment 5 kicked off songs with similar vibes by Steven Graves and Roger Silverberg, and a new song from Patricia Silverberg. Final segment started off with a heart-rendering tune by Dan May.

Radio Crystal Blue 2nd Quarter Airplay Chart

The chart has just been published to the site.   Songwriter trio Red Molly are the leaders this time around.  They received the most airplay in the last 3 months, covering a period from April to June 2012.   Combined with a 30th place spot in the 1st Quarter, they are one of 24 artists who have a mathematical edge in being the top artists of 2012.  Vance Gilbert, last quarter’s leader, and the reigning Artist Of The Year (2011), landed 2nd place for the 2nd quarter.   In 3rd is folk ensemble Spuyten Duyvil, reigning RCB New Artists Of The Year. 57 artists made the cut across 3 sub-categories: amount of airplay across the last 3 months, airplay in the last 12 months, and a self-designed formula evaluating largest increase in airplay and exposure in the last 12 months.
9 artists have extended their airplay-quarter streak to at least 10 quarters.

My quarterly CHART page will be updated in the first week of July, as I reveal who the most popular artists on my show are. I base stats on progressive amounts of airplay and recent exposure via the show. What’s the chart like at this moment? Read up at the chart tab of http://www.radiocrystalblue.net

Reminding you all that any compelling compilation/concept CDs can be sent
here directly. I’m seeking material that can be featured, song-for-song, in
my CD FOCUS segments. It’s been a while since the last feature.

I composed a short essay re the matter of album sales and the stances of several DJs and artists. I aimed to take an outsider perspective on the huge debate that took place on the Web this week. By now you know about what two DJs at NPR did, for the sake of honesty and space-saving (digital footprint if you will). One prominent artist spoke out against them on his blog. I give you my take in the latest post to my website: Mythical Album Dollars At Stake: Beyond Lowery vs. White. Read on at http://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/06/21/mythical-album-dollars-at-stake-beyond-lowery-v-white/

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.

RCB Novus Ordo: Jo Wymer presents an album of hard-hitting rock n’ roll. Fire On McGinnis bring a thoroughly modern rock touch to traditional and Celtic tunes (the song I spun, “Nancy Whiskey” mixes the sounds of bagpipes and guitars very well). Chantilly (Waryck) from Brooklyn has resurfaced musically with a new dreamy EP. A long call-response tune from the heartfelt songwriter Devirose rounds out this edition.

RCB proper: With a busy schedule and overall tiredness I got this show out to all of you on Thursday. I got my first Spotify signup in the process! Marina V and Manda Mosher perform at Molly Malone’s in Los Angeles on 6/24. Started with sunshiny pop in the beginning of segment 1, and then the clouds came in. Is there such thing as cloudy pop? Maybe so. Segment 2 presented another new song by Changing Modes, and a 2009 song from Brett Gleason, who makes his airplay debut for my show here. Segment 3 relies a lot on good harmonies. In particular is the change in harmony and mood from Ryan Tennis’ “Wicky-I-oh” and Emily Pinkerton’s “Negra”. The latter song stems from Emily’s study of Peruvian huaynos, mixed with a WV traditional song. Segment 4 starts with a brand new album by Anna Dagmar. Lucy Kaplansky is heard on backing vocals. Anna opens for Lucy at Tupelo Music Hall, Londonderry NH, 6/23.
