CAPE MAY is in my immediate future. Next week’s news will be released on Thursday instead of Friday as I’ll be attending the 6th annual Cape May Singer-Songwriter Festival. The festival runs 3/22 and 3/23, with many different panels and workshops to attend during the day at Congress Hall, and then over a dozen establishments in this historic town featuring songwriters through both evenings. I will be MC’ing such a showcase at The Inn At Cape May on Saturday 3/23. The talent is presented by Tunes2ya www.tunes2ya.com I look forward to seeing you there. RCB rewind:

RCB Novus Ordo: The majority of the program was devoted to musicians performing at the aforementioned Cape May Songwriter Festival. Alongside this were the latest from my inbox of new material, including John Corbett, with a polished ready-for-radio country sound.

RCB proper: Some RCB traditions to point out: Every mid-March, at the Ides, I always spin Iggy Pop’s “Caesar”. Also I spin some Celtic music. Why not, right? This year I got deep into the Afro-Celtic sound, beginning with The Upsetter himself, Lee “Scratch” Perry, in collaboration with The Orb. It’s been a while since I gave you some Black 47 music! The tune by Margaret Brennan is my favorite from the Hearts Of Space compilation featuring Celtic vocalists. Couldn’t find anything on the Web about Sheoda, tho. As with last music, a good deal of airplay was devoted to artists who were either sharing promotional or venue billing at that SXSW happening in Austin. Among the notable: Jimmy LaFave name-checking Native American tribes in “Red Dirt Night”. Megan Slankard’s incredible songwriting. Vajra’s worship songs. The Pinz, once again, grace my airwaves with a song that could have been big 30 years ago. A flash back to Andy Friedman & The Other Failures and that hollerin’ voice. Fablecar & Flashbulb Fires, two bands also on the verge with some futuristic rock. Melissa Greener makes her debut here as well. Beth DeSombre’s tune “Fun Will Find A Way” has a line about a shantytown. Of course, I had to spin Aztec Two-Step’s “Shantytown”. Outside of SX: Danielle Miraglia & Craig Bickhardt are at the Lansdowne Folk Club on 3/21. On 3/22 David Wilcox & Catie Curtis are at City Winery in…wait for it….Chicago!

Beth Kaufman mentions that her band, the wonderful Spuyten Duyvil will be at Concerts at The Crossing in Titusville, NJ on 3/23. Sharing the stage that evening will be Pesky J Nixon. More info at www.concertsatthecrossing.com www.spuytenduyvilmusic.com

I was also at The Legendary Dobbs last night to see Changing Modes along other bands. I am still uploading all media and haven’t yet written a review. Look for those later on Saturday (today).
This is the last live event I cover for a while until April. I do want to get to some others, but I must be careful of my health. I’ve had some issue with my stomach and wonder if there’s more going on than I know.

OK so I’m not a 3- or 4-letter radio station. I’ve done a lot of things on behalf of this show that those stations do. Awards, online votes, interviews. I just cannot afford it right now. I also wonder if it holds any meaning to do so. I refuse to let people pass my show off as just one more notch on their radio bedpost. I strive to make this freeform program thoroughly unique and accessible. You don’t have to ‘get’ me. But I would appreciate it if you did. And if you do, thank you 🙂

RCB rewind:
RCB Novus Ordo: I had seen The Dan Sheehan Conspiracy, sans drummer the prior week, and debuted their second and new album on this show. Craic The Lens puts a subtle Celtic spin on their alternative rock sound. Astro returns with a new album as well. Hank Stone tells me that the untitled bonus track from his latest is titled “Nobody Cried (Invisible Tears)”.
 
RCB proper: Segment 1: Bluegrass-oriented supergroup Barnstar! make a live stage appearance this week, first one since last June, and I follow suit in kicking off the latest show. Stayed in a countrified theme to start. Sean Kershaw & The New Jack Ramblers, along with Jessie Kilguss share billing tonight at Red Hook Bait and Tackle in Brooklyn. Steven Graves gets another airing from his new album. Segment 2: As SXSW’s influence creeps in, I built a segment around Jeff Campbell, one of a number of artists performing near the MusicGorilla.com banner during next week’s big festival. I introduced new music from New Sweden (yes, from Delaware) along with more new sounds from The Pinz and Trapdoor Social. Segment 3: All rock for this segment. The Shipwrecks make their debut directly into my rotation. They are an interesting surf/jam band based in Long Island, NY. Segment 4 was more standard contemporary music. Marci Geller & Allison’s Invention will be part of one of the many showcases at that Cape May Singer-Songwriter Festival I keep telling you about, on 3/22. Carolann Solebello & Catherine Miles (The YaYas), along with Karyn Oliver share billing at The Towne Crier on 3/10. Carolann along with Bev Grant host Sharon Goldman at Two Moon Art House & Cafe on 3/15. Final segment got somewhat inspiritational in lyrics. Luke Potter’s uptempo sounds also debut within the rotation. He recorded a few songs with producer/songwriter Bleu, whom I last saw on stage maybe 7 years ago. Honor Finnegan and Anna Dagmar perform as part of the New Haven Folk Consortium House Concert series tonight (3/10)

Dan Herman emceeing showcase at 2013 Cape May Songwriters Festival

I have agreed to MC one whole showcase at the 2013 Cape May Singer Songwriter Festival. The March 23 showcase, part of a 2-night stand produced by Kat@tunes2ya, will be held at Aleathea’s Restaurant inside The Inn At Cape May, at the south end of the Jersey Shore.

The festival, now in it’s sixth year, will bring together 150 songwriters and some bands, with a decided accent on NJ-based artists. Inside Congress Hall, there are workshops and mentoring sessions scheduled, along with keynote speeches from renowned songwriters Tracy Grammer and Ellis Paul.  All of the performances will take place in 17 different establishments across this landmarked Jersey town.

It’s been several years since I’ve done any onstage MC work, but I’m already looking forward to the experience. You can expect me to spin the music of Kat@tunes2ya artists from both 3/22 and 3/23 on Radio Crystal Blue in the week of and prior to the festival.
