*****
This past week, I took some bolder steps in getting part of my vision out to the world. You know, the vision I posted above. It’s also searchable at my website if you type ‘vision’ in the search area. The different aspects of my life that I want to grow into and live aren’t going anyway. I still feel there are opportunities to do better, and to be more of the person I really want to be. Part of the vision is growing the radio presence to more people. With every tweet and post, I aim to reach new eyes and ears to my place online, and also to bring the sounds of true indie/underground artists to more listeners. Sports is another area that continues to unfold. Last week I submitted an essay to a leading baseball website for consideration. It’s stat-laden but also very original as I created my own formula and provide concrete examples despite its experimental status. Someone will put it to good use! There’s other areas of sport I want to make manifest, and I believe it means connecting with the right person at the right time and always being available.
The work situation remains unchanged. I am seeking better-fitting jobs and leads that will lead to the work I want to do.

Some news from some companies that I support here for a change. You know I champion the premier coffee alternative, Teeccino. They’ve just released a dandelion series of flavors. The root is applied to the standard flavors for Teeccino including their Dark Roast, Mocha and Vanilla Nut (my favorite so far). No gluten, no barley and no caffeine to mess up your innards (I speak from experience!). More at http://teeccino.com/category/73/Barley-Free-Dandelion-Flavors.html

The Alternate Root online publication, creator of the alternate roots genre, have been on public-access cable in a number of networks across the US. Last week they began their commercial TV network debut on WBIN, which directly reaches most of the New England states, and is also available on some of the satellite and cable networks. Alternate Root TV provides an hour’s worth of live performance and dialogue from the top names in the genre. Some of the names which have been heard on RCB include Patty Larkin, and The Howlin Brothers. Details here: http://thealternateroot.com/watch-alternate-root-tv

RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo: Laura Berman’s music, much of a pop alternative with an inspirational feel to it, returns to my airwaves. I’ve become a fan of Luke Dowler, who has his own spin on alternative and roots.
RCB proper: This edition had a good deal of editing in it, owing to technical issues. My CD player is just about toast now. I need a new one to keep airing any music. Meanwhile I did give a good show, starting in segment 1 with the closing track of The Kennedys’ album 2012 “Closer Than You Know”. “Winter Lies” bookends the album along with “Winter”. Brand new music from Molasses Creek also. This ensemble calls Ocracoke Island, NC, just off the mainland, their home. Segment 2 focused a bit on artists that performed in this year’s prime Light Of Day Foundation showcase events, all around Asbury Park NJ. Disappear Fear makes another appearance here. Followed this up with some blues, and a rather interesting cowboy/hiphop hybrid of music from the gentlman known as DP. Segment 3: South Florida Folk Festival in Walton FL was in focus here, as I gave you music from artists participating in the various showcases along with those in the songwriting competition. That competition strongly resembles the one that the Kerrville Folk Festival organizes. Glad to hear that Steve Chizmadia was one of the winners! Gathering Time were one of the headline acts. I aired a traditional tune from their new album. There was also the thread of travel here (Carolann Solebello, Marci Geller, Annie Wenz). I like Lou Dominguez’s song about a central NJ record store and his memories. Final segment: Red Molly and Antje Duvekot shared several billings in the past week.

I’m putting my digital hat in the ring once again, as I enter the 2014 Shorty Awards, which is a popular online vote honoring ‘the best of social media’ in 200 categories. I am in the Podcaster category. Essentially, for me to win the coveted trophy, I have to secure the most votes. Simple, right? We can do this! Just share and tweet out my profile on their site:

http://shortyawards.com/radiocblue When you fill in the reason for nominating me, be sure to select Podcaster in the drop-down area. See where I rank here: http://shortyawards.com/category/6th/podcaster

Only real drama this week was on the homefront as I lost some personal items and the pipes freezing here. It was a week where I had to go without a number of items that we take for granted. Further it actually delayed my podcasting for this past week, and I apologize that you’ve had to wait until Friday to hear the first show of the year.
I still have a lot to process, still waiting on $, still pursuing alternative means of income, and continuing to attract interesting people along the way. I remain a sort of hermit as I haven’t pursued thoroughly social activity since my financial situation became worse, which was also the state of things for the majority of 2013.
RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo was intended to be 8 artists in length, but the discovery of some older albums in the mix reduced it to 6.
As for RCB proper: My opening segment has changed over the years. You’ll recall I used to spin specific songs honoring the new year, and the end of the century, plus an underlying war theme that ran from novelty (“Snoopy vs. The Red Baron”) through anthemic (“New Year’s Day” by U2). This year I stuck to what I did last year, being decidedly wintry, both re lyrics and sound. Brenda Kahn’s tune “Yellow Sun” evokes the immediate aftermath of a NYE party. The song is from my collection of CMJ CD’s from the 1990’s. “Say Hello” from the new album by Sarah Rabdau & Self-Employed Assassinis, starts the first proper indie segment of the year. I was one of several folks who volunteered voices for the ‘hello’ you hear echoed in the song. Listen for new music by Shakeh and Spuyten Duyvil in this segment. Amy Speace’s tune “In Salida” is twinned with a passage from Shakespeare’s Richard III in the liner notes of Amy’s latest album . Segment 2 includes blues numbers from Too Slim & The Taildraggers, and Tweed Funk and another new one from Jack + Jill. Segment 3 focused on artists performing at the 5th annual 30A Songwriter Festival, being held in Walton, FL, January 17 through 19. This was the first chance I had to air music from John Gorka, who is soon to release a new album. Final segment includes more new music from Lowland Hum.

**
Outside of radio for a moment: I’m still dealing with heavy financial issues and am not sure I’ll have the most important of bills, the rent, paid this month. However there are some very positive changes afoot: I just landed some temporary work and have also begun to field some job interviews. Pending pre-employment matters, I might start in a week. All of this news built up on Friday. I’m practically mesmerized at the speed of it all! Top priority is getting all bills paid, and securing work in whatever form. My personal life will get a lot busier and that means a bit less time for radio work. But this is what I’ve asked for to get my life in order. These events could not have come at a more important time. Donations, of course, are certainly welcome. Your donations helped keep me off the streets before.
I’m not exactly in a celebratory mood. Moreover I am focused on getting the rest of the bills paid, and hoping to save money quickly. Until I find myself in more solid financial footing, I’m staying off the grid for any matters involving the music industry. The podcasts will continue on a weekly basis, time permitting.

********

The annotated notes of this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: Carolann Solebello’s fourth solo album is released this month, with her brand of urban-folk reintroduced with a newer level of maturity in the songs. Von Shakes is the other NYC/Dublin based band I saw last month at The Grape Room here in Philadelphia, a edgy alternative pop-rock outfit. DP (Daniel Perez) presents indie hip-hop in a style comparable to Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
RCB proper: I retold my story about 9/11 and my gratefulness to be alive to tell the tale. Chris Pan’s 2006 album “All A Dream” is about his take on 9/11 in 3 different moods. Chris has a public-access program on Manhattan Neighborhood Network expanding on some of these ideals. Segment 1: Debut airplay for Matt The Electrician, who also appears on Rebecca Loebe’s recent album. Matt shared billing with Nels Andrews at Don Quixote’s in Felton CA on 9/11, then with Shinyribs (Ken Russell of The Gourds) at Palm’s Playhouse, Winters CA on 9/12. Segment 2 includes more new music from Australian bluegrass outfit Mustered Courage and Russian-American songwriter Marina V. Segment 3: Ellis and Roy Schneider are headline showcase participants at the South West Regional Folk Alliance Conference, held in Austin, 9/26-29. I kept to a rough roots and blues influence with this segment, ending in inspiration (Rani Arbo, Lisa Biales). Segment 4: Terry Rivel’s tune “Angel In Darkness” sounds an awful lot like Buck Owens’ “Streets Of Bakersfield” (could be just my ears). Three songs followed with foreign voices (one each Polish, Chilean, French).
