Radio Crystal Blue 1st Quarter Airplay Chart announcement

Vance Gilbert, on the heels of being named Artist of the Year for 2011 back in January, continues his presence on Radio Crystal Blue as the leading artist for the first 3 months of 2011.  Carolann Solebello, herself in 3rd place for 2011, also finished very strong as the 2nd place artist in the same 2012 time period.  Avi Wisnia gathered momentum to finished 3rd.
Ten of the RCB All-Time Top 25 are in this chart. Fifty artists in all made the list. These fifty will have the best chance to be named Artist of the Year for 2012 in 10 months.
The chart is built from a combination of progressive amounts of airplay (more frequent and airplay from past 3 months than prior quarters), and exposure (airplay plus artists I see in person and interact with in some form).
Vance led everyone in pure airplay over the past 3 months, while he and Carolann led out in 12-month airplay (April 2011-March 2012). Carolann led in top exposure.    The Trews, not on the chart, did have one of the better exposure scores.
Brother Sun make their chart debut this quarter, as do Christina LaRocca, David Wilcox, Garrison Starr, Helen Austin, and Randy Stern.

Have a look at the Chart tab on the site for full details.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about March 21 and will be available for about 4 months beyond. Owing to schedule demands, I usually aim for noon Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands. RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

You’ll also hear: CD FOCUS:”Little Blue Egg” by Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. This is a disc with 11 long-lost recordings found by Tracy 2 years ago, I will spin 2 tracks from this compilation. http://www.redhouserecords.com http://www.tracygrammer.com **********************************************************************************

Firstly I was under the weather much of this week, tho am emerging from whatever is ailing me, and also learning a few things about responding to people, emotionally and otherwise. I promised and delivered music from a number of artists that appear this week and weekend at SXSW. An entire segment was created around Megan Slankard, who was performing on several showcases along with fellow songwriters based elsewhere around the US. After remarking that it was time I got off the grid in terms of live local music, my computer chose to follow suit for a brief while. Web issues are largely resolved, tho I’m likely to get the PC an upgrade in RAM and maybe an external hard drive. New monitor also. I also want to continue bolstering the RCB idea to more folks, tho it all comes down to realistic expectations re the finished product, along with how much time and $ to devote to it. I still seek a day job within reasonable commute time of Philly.

REVIEW: I was at El Bar on 3/10/12, seeing local bands of some renown, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. When I say ‘go off the grid’, I mean seeing bands/songwriters I’ve never heard, in a place I’ve never been to before. I recommend doing this once every few months. Have a look at what happened in my latest review at http://www.radiocrystalblue.net

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.

On RCB Novus Ordo: The smooth modern rock of Tom Fuller Band started this show. Spanking Charlene appears here with a song about a Brooklyn nabe (Steven Van Zandt in the producer’s chair). Secret Skwirl, a project borne out of remastered lost recordings and an unknown band is one to watch for. I’d love to see whether the guys behind that music will resurface. Wes Tucker & The Skillets with an album recorded live at Alene’s Grocery in NYC (you non-NYC denizens should know that Arlene’s Grocery is on the former site of a grocery). Folklore also debuts here with (classically) epic tales of dinosaurs, robots, apocalyptic matters (unless I’m confusing them with a certain UK band. Nah).

RCB proper: RCB tradition is for me to spin Iggy Pop’s “Caesar” and also some Celtic music. This year I reintroduced the music of Philly-area group RUNA. Avi Wisnia & Rachael Sage performed an SXSW event already this week, and Avi’s back to the East Coast touring as usual. Nice to have Remember September on the radar again here in segment 1. Segment 2 includes a brand new song by Schwervon!, a song recorded in Memphis. They are about to move to Kansas (and I feel like I’m among the last to know somehow). I’m used to MAKAR rocking out on earlier albums, tho I do like the groove on their new CD, which I spun from again. Remember September and Talking To Walls are playing a week-long music festival somewhere in NYC’s Upper East Side; my online notes don’t indicate who else is in the festival. TTW’s tune has bagpipes in it! My Pet Dragon shares billing with 3 Kisses and Manda Mosher at a Go Girls Music SXSW event on 3/17. As mentioned earlier, Megan Slankard’s appearing at various SXSW shows practically inspired a whole segment in itself. Again I spun from Jeff Campbell’s CD, the song he wrote with Megan. From there, we hear the lovely partnerships of Sproule/Curreri and Elkin/Schmidt, plus extra music from TX’s own Raina Rose (who’s now a mom), and a magnificent song from Rebecca Loebe, plus a new one from Sarah Blacker. Further segment includes some righteousness in song from Andrew McKnight and Sean Kershaw (listen for Pat Wictor on lap steel and vox). More SXSW love for Christina LaRocca and Casey Desmond. Carolann Solebello and Pat Wictor co-bill tonight (Friday) at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA.

RCB Novus Ordo returned this week. This show is one where I spin one song from as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you background of each artist.
**********************************************************************************
Hi all! (You too, Bueller.)  What’s new?  For me, diet is better and I’m getting back to some old patterns and changing out what doesn’t work.  Radio work is just fine as I continue to field inquiries from many folks across North America and a bit from Europe.  The other day I received requested material in the form of chill/breakbeat/deep house from the UK. It will likely make for background/intro/outro music for the show. Yes, tho I don’t spin this genre in the rotation, I do like my share of electronica. Years ago, I used music from The Orb for such times.  Maybe it’s time to trot it out again .
Next week I’ll be at Milkboy Coffee in Ardmore for the first time. This will be my third attempt at attending, as my bod just didn’t have it in me to travel long distance. Now I’m a lot better and looking forward to seeing two songwriters: Meghan Cary, who’s releasing a new CD, and Marybeth D’Amico, who returns to her PA/NJ/NY roots after being in Germany for a number of years.  I plan to interview Marybeth prior to the event.
I did feel healthy enough to attend Sine Studios‘ first invite-only public event, featuring Lisa Biales, and Ronstadt Generations.  I also attended an acoustic showcase hosted by James Hearne at Lickety Split on South Street.

I have a full blog post on my website about both event, so point thy browser this way:

@ Sine Studios and Lickety Split, Philly, 2/15/12

RCB REVIEW:
On RCB Novus Ordo: Two bands that I saw the last time I visited the now-closed Tritone were North Lawrence Midnight Singers, and Shane Dodd. Both headed the airplay on this program.  Justin James returns to my airwaves. He splits time between various Caribbean points-of-call, and sunny places on the road in the US.  Meg Braun also returns with a new album, produced by Tom Prasada-Rao. The song is inspired by Joan Didion’s book ‘The Year Of Magical Thinking”.

RCB proper:  Relatively short show, this one was. Andrew McKnight & Mark McKay share a bill on 2/26 for a songwriters festival in Frederick, MD. I spun social commentary songs of theirs that kinda rocked.      The young sisters von Grey from Georgia get second airing of their music.    More recently released music from Fallen Riviera and instrumental band A Ghost Like Me are heard in segment 2.   Finished the run of songs from the Vermont compilation CD. Thanks publicly go to Glory Reinstein & Bluebird Promotions and Maletts Bay Records for the opportunity to spin all the music from the disc.   Honor Finnegan heard for a second oonsecutive show the uke diva shared billing with Carolann Solebello on 2/15.  Any segue involving Benyaro is a darn good one. They’re preparing a covers album, and a disc of original ones to follow that for 2013.  I almost forgot they’re based in WY now.  They were in NYC for a number of years.   Spuyten Duyvil and Kath Buckell were on a bill 2/16 in Piermont, NY. Spuyten Duyvil’s tune is a traditional one, while Kath’s is one about an Australian herder, or ‘drover’.    You’ll be hearing a lot more from Kath and Honor in weeks to come.     Looking ahead to Fat Tuesday, spun one from Tom PrincipatoMarybeth D’Amico makes a return to the Philadelphia area next week; I spun a wintry tune from her recently released CD.
