@ Sine Studios and Lickety Split, Philly, 2/15/12

I attended  two music events on Wednesday, one in the historic Rittenhouse Square area, another on South Street.
A perfect cool winter evening it was, walking through theSquare, hearing vesper chimes from a nearby church, bypassing lxuury houses and hotels.  I arrived at Sine Studios on South 22nd Street.  The studio was designed by Obie O’Brien of Bon Jovi. There are 3 floors of activity, with the main recording room on the top floor and control room on the second.  It’s a warm environment with parquet floor and a few dozen seats of various types. There are soft lights overhead plus wide lampshade designs with bonus lighting covering part of the walls. Also on display were bootleg album covers of classic rock albums we’ve all heard of.
There were CDs of the nights performers, and some lovely sweet desserts, plus plenty of Yuengling beer. I took a brew and one of the brownies (no, kids, not the magic type).
Tonight was the first music event (invite-only) being held in the studio. Katie Barbato (The Sleepwells), wife of proprietor Matt Teacher, opened the show with five songs. One was from her latest CD “The Millay Tapes”. From that album she performed a “lesbian rock-anthem”, the name of which escapes me.  Assisting were two members of Ronstadt Generations: father Michael J. on guitar, and son Michael G. on cello  Katie is a heartfelt songstress, with music that is generally cinematic, putting the listener in a mythical time and space. Michael G. added some great fills on cello to Katie’s acoustic sound.

The featured performer tonight was Oxford, OH’s Lisa Biales.  Anchored with her trusty parlor guitar, Lisa performed about 10 songs including a few traditional ones and music from her 2010 album “Closet Hippie”. Katie was most curious about the song “Rainbow Jesus”. Lisa described it as a dream sequence in song (she attends a weekly dream workshop).  Lisa runs the Big Song Music House and hosts a house concert series there (Guy Davis headlines there in March). Along with this she is active in duo and trio shows across her native Ohio.  Lisa performed with great ease, a strong voice, and also was assisted by Ronstadt Generations for her appearance. They had just performed at the Arizona Best Festival in Phoenix (home to their family roots) plus a show in Tuscon before making the trek back to the East Coast.

I took the time to interview Lisa just after soundcheck.  She remarked how she’s looking forward to her newest album’s release, featuring more an electric sound alongside her acoustic blues based sound. Up until this album, Lisa had done all the work with putting together an album along with marketing and booking. This next album has an outside producer (EG Kight) and some help for booking and marketing.  I’ll have that interview available on the Web as soon as it’s fit to publish.
I stayed for two songs performed by Ronstadt Generations, who are Michael J.,  Michael G., and son #2 Petie (acoustic). They performed tight harmonies, both with a song referencing wagons (“Wagon Mound”), and a Spanish-flavored one, punctuated with foot-stomping on the chorus.
I ducked out on that note, said my good-byes and well-wishes to Matt and Katie, and took the #12 bus to Society Hill and walked over to South Street.  James Hearne, local acoustic songwriter, hosted an acoustic show at Lickety Split,  a 2-floor eatery laden with HD TV, a ton of exposed brick, comfy seating, and an impressive list of great food (not to mention some cocktails with G- and R- rated references!) I had a $3 Kensington brew, and a medium-heat small bowl of veggie chili accompanied with tiny white bread slices. The stage is shallow, probably holding 3 comfortably at best. It was a loose showcase affair, as James would play a few songs and let others join in for a few songs a time. I walked in while duo Venice Sunlight   did their thing. They performed mostly original songs, covering John Faye on one song (who was hosting his weekly open-mic at nearby Legendary Dobbs). The vocalist of the two has a strong voice, steeped in punk, and sings of everyday urban life and relationships. My favorite of the songs I heard was “Third and Washington”.   James performed songs from his own repertoire plus some from his local roots-rock outfit The Way Home. The band is are about to release a new album titled “On So Thin A Line”. They have gigs across NY, NJ and PA in the forthcoming weeks.  Another confident local songwriter, Douglas J. Lee, did a few songs (and gave me his 2008 CD). There was a young songwriter who did two songs, Tyler by name, who reminded me a bit of Mike Herrera and that guy from Dashboard Confessional.  Speaking of, I can imagine that the performers on the bill all grew up hearing those guys along with sound-alikes (thinking back to seeing Mike Herrera of MxPx back in April).  Perhaps this is the new Philly sound, along with the vintage roots-rock I’ve heard from a different camp of local artists.
Pictured below is the handwritten note warning bad tippers, and Venice Sunlight.

@ The Grape Room 2/10/12

Midwinter’s chill didn’t hold back many folks from attending The Grape Room on Friday night.  There was a decent breeze in the night air with rain just changing over to snow. Lovely if you’re a driver. Me, I take the bus.  The bus I get goes from Center City down Ridge Avenue, about 30 minutes to beautiful downtown upper-class Manayunk.  Train is quicker but also more expensive.  I risked some time in getting to the first stop at the bus and missed it…and had to endure a 45 minute wait. Basically one bus totally blew off the schedule and didn’t arrive while the 2nd one did very shortly after.  I got in around 845pm and had just missed seeing local folk-rocker Matt Spitko.
Tonight included bands that I had seen earlier in 2011.  Andrew Jude, who opened for Song Dogs & The Nightjar in December, was second up.  Andrew has some solid guitar-oriented pop songs…think Del Amitri or the more accessible of Luna’s music. I had chatted with their drummer, Don Brown, who has a powerful technique and great fills. He mentioned that, on Thursday, the band played at his alma mater of Philadelphia University for a Relay for Life benefit. Andrew and band was a trio tonight; Alicia, their violinist was out of town. I recall Andrew saying that she’s with the band on some regional dates depending on the locale.  Andrew received debut airplay from me on Radio Crystal Blue earlier in the week.

The Tressels did their thing all over the Grape Room stage….a 5 piece band that I covered for you in a prior post when they played at Legendary Dobbs. Pretty much the same script as before, some of the same songs, and much of the same kinetic energy . One guy handles maracas and tambos, another stands tall and quiet on guitar, another handles flashy lead guitar, and a drummer tucked in the back who keeps an understated but steady hand with the backbeat.  Exciting band to see; that is, if you like to see bands that make like The Who with all their craftiness on stage. Possibly the best local band I’ve seen since beginning my coverage of local showcases last summer.  Before the last song, lead vox Butch Tressels asks a hardcore Sinatra trivia question “What was the last song that Sinatra sang in his final concert?” I did know the answer was “The Best Is Yet To Come” but waited for a response from the audience. No response came. Instead there was the constant chatter of hipsters and folks just standing around gawking or gabbing with each other. No matter. They did launch into that final song, climaxing with  Mickey Reds (percussion, 2nd vocalist) delivering a mighty roar that would do whatshisname in the Who proud.    Outside while I caught my breath from the slowly packing venue (where did all those young ladies come from), I had met most of the band in post-show smoke. A doe-eyed brunette was waxing eloquent about the band’s set and how they’ll make The Grape Room a place they’ll attend time and again. I love when that magic happens. The Tressels didn’t really have much of a challenge with the stage doing all their shtick.  One bandmember (I believe it was Bruce) was mentioning have to do “the Bruce thing” (Springsteen, perhaps?), crouching low on guitar and maintaining rhythm and control while the others cavorted. They were to play on 2/11 at The Alphabet Lounge in the East Village section of NYC, then another date with Dobbs in March.

The Tressels shared stages several times before with another local act, Johnny Action Figure, and did likewise on Friday. This regional 4-piece sing out loud and enjoy being in the moment on stage.  No stage antics beyond the norm for them; they have 2 keyboards to work plus guitar and drums, plus a great original pop aesthethic that will continue to attract fans in PA.

By midway through the set, yours truly was having the worst time getting good camera angles thanks to the teeming dozens that decide to populate every square inch of the room.  I hightailed out of there just as Johnny Action Figure wrapped up.  Apparently the headline band, Kalob Griffin Band by name (State College by place), brought in a huge amount there.
Waiting for the last bus out of Manayunk (again, forgoing the nearby train and extra expense), I glanced in admiration at the folks walking up and down Main Street, underdressed to the eights and nines. Same time every night, from what I’ve seen, seems to present this scene.   The cold rain was a bonus of sorts.

Just fine.  Recovered very nicely from whatever was ailing me tho adhering to a better diet certainly doesn’t hurt.  Cutting out coffee and soda but getting back to some of my old ways soon enough.   I did skip one gig I wanted to go to, but am planning to go to one tonight; very shortly as a matter of fact. RCB REVIEW:
On RCB Novus Ordo: The aforementioned Andrew Jude with a song set in Philadelphia started this show. The Strange Heat had played a bill at The Grape Room and I debut them here.  Ditto for Glassboro, NJ’s own indie pop band Case Closed. Makar returns with newer material, slightly subduded, more piano than guitar on this disc than in previous ones.   Katie Pearlman, one of my very favorites, has a concept album “Girls Like Me” based on stories of the lives of women that touched her heart. The book referenced for her songs is “Note To Self: 30 Women on Hardship, Humiliation, Heartbreak, and Overcoming It All” by Andrea Buchanan.    The deep, dark, sultry bluesy voice of Lin McEwan closes out this show, Muzz Skillings producing her newest effort.

RCB proper:   Tony Mecca (and those Electric Heavy Mental Gypsys) playing a few shows while they ready a new album; I dug into their prior material for a tune.  Jeff Campbell and Megan Slankard  part of a songwriter-in-the-round 2/17 at Studio on 4th, Reno NV  Jeff and Megan composed and wrote the song I spun for you this week.  I spun Megan’s song directly after this one. I was moved by the depth and creativity of her songwriting. I’m actually reminded of Holly Figueroa (O’Reilly).  In fact I contacted Holly about Megan, and…well…I’ll let you read her response via Facebook.  Then a pair of CA-based songwriters (Giana Nguyen, Marina V) followed.    I did 2 segments of music featuring artists who are part of official showcases at this year’s Folk Alliance conference in Memphis. Heather Styka is a new name, gaining strong popularity in the folk category. I had used a quote from the matthew show and also the timely song “february” in posting the playist info.  Debuted a solo piano CD from Professor Louie, segued into West Coast Blues and then rockabilly (Rod Piazza, The Mad Tea),  Garrison Starr made a new EP for her fans; I took liberty of spinning from that one, following up with train-oriented songs (Vance Gilbert, The Nields). Closed out with songs by Lauren Adams and Ernest Troost. Ernest just released “Live at McCabe’s” recorded January 2011 at McCabe’s Guitar Shop.  Lauren reintroduces her Americana Music Circle at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles.
