RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.
On RCB Novus Ordo: Standout artists from this edition include Swinging Steaks who’ve shared stages with a ton of modern rock bands; veteran songwriter Jon McAuliffe who has just released his first solo CD (I spun an ode to Kerouac), and the legendary Aztec Two-Step, from a compilation of their songs titled “Cause And Effect”.

RCB proper:Just about the longest show I’ve done since the December holidays. Debuted another artist on the UK label Intelligent Audio, the veteran DJ Nigel Hayes with some disco house to start off this show. Segment went from blues (Bob Corritore, Eilen Jewell,) to more songwriter-oriented material, including new albums from Loretta Hagen and Clarence Bucaro. Segment 2 was the first of 2 where I featured artists performing in Cape May this weekend. Among them were The Way Home and their new CD “On So Thin A Line”. Also a new album from Meghan Cary, who debuted her CD on my birthday (1/31) Segment 3 includes Song Dogs & The Nightjar, a great classic-style rock band local to Philly, and Bound By Substance, who are part of a multi-venue event on Long Island to benefit the Long Island Crisis Center. This takes place on 3/31 www.longislandcrisiscenter.org Segment 4 is where I began with the matthew show (listen for “invocation” which precedes “Half A Man”. I know it’s not on the playlist. That’s why you’re encouraged to tune in and hear it!). The YaYas and Honor Finnegan (who is backed by The YaYas on her album) share billing at a house concert in Manhattan on 3/31. Segment 5 focused again on Cape May; included is music by Wilmington DE’s Rachel Schain and another new one from Katie Pearlman. Closing segment incldues music by New Englanders Craig Sonnenfeld and Patti DeRosa, who are part of a benefti for local veteran at the Holliston (MA) VFW post, taking place tonight (3/30). The aforementioned Jon McAuliffe also on the bill.

Radio Crystal Blue 1st Quarter Airplay Chart announcement

Vance Gilbert, on the heels of being named Artist of the Year for 2011 back in January, continues his presence on Radio Crystal Blue as the leading artist for the first 3 months of 2011.  Carolann Solebello, herself in 3rd place for 2011, also finished very strong as the 2nd place artist in the same 2012 time period.  Avi Wisnia gathered momentum to finished 3rd.
Ten of the RCB All-Time Top 25 are in this chart. Fifty artists in all made the list. These fifty will have the best chance to be named Artist of the Year for 2012 in 10 months.
The chart is built from a combination of progressive amounts of airplay (more frequent and airplay from past 3 months than prior quarters), and exposure (airplay plus artists I see in person and interact with in some form).
Vance led everyone in pure airplay over the past 3 months, while he and Carolann led out in 12-month airplay (April 2011-March 2012). Carolann led in top exposure.    The Trews, not on the chart, did have one of the better exposure scores.
Brother Sun make their chart debut this quarter, as do Christina LaRocca, David Wilcox, Garrison Starr, Helen Austin, and Randy Stern.

Have a look at the Chart tab on the site for full details.

A couple of show reviews to catch you up on.

2 individual artists showcased their music in the last 7 days. On 3/22, James Hearne and his band The Way Home, held a listening party and an unplugged performance at Sine Studios. I had met James at Connie’s Ric-Rac last year, and also at Lickety Split earlier this year. James’ quick exuberant delivery of songs about everyday life makes for an exciting performance. The party was absolute fun; most people seemed to know everyone else, making for a truly supportive environment unlike a standard music venue. Proprietor Matt Teacher led tours of the studio during the event. There was plenty of Naragansett and Yuengling lager along with Rolling Rock and your basic Coca-Cola. Pretty good food spread too (the salsa was delicious). James performed on acoustic, with newest member Henry Nam on the Rhodes, Dan Drago on acoustic (usually on bass for the band), and Nicklas Hughes on percussion. The Way Home performed most of the songs from the album. Aaron Stock, a longtime friend of the band and also of their precursor The Sobriquets) played vibes on 2 of the songs, tho I suspect this was more of a joke. Aaron also darted through the band in one song to get to the food, probably the funniest moment of the evening along with some generic debauchery, to coin a phrase. I’ll spare the finer details except this: a handful of folks tested the vibes, not aware initially that you have to have your foot on the pedal to give it the warm sound you’d recognize from it!
On 3/28 Boston songwriter Kirsten Opstad performed at Community Cultural Exchange, a small one-room storefront on South Street. CCE serves to be the living pulse of South Street, supporting all forms of art and culture for the immediate community. Kirsten had just canceled a scheduled performance at the aforementioned  Connie’s Ric-Rac to play this one. She was on acoustic and solo for this show. What gets me is not the voice, not so much the music, but the words. Kirsten brings the snark! It’s present in her tales of late-night and morning-after viewpoints, and reflections of female relationships in a thoroughly modern distracted age. Kirsten’s delivery is quick and simple, as is her delivery on her Takamine guitar. She performed a 40 minute set amidst the assortment of artwork adorning the walls and floor of CCE. She was a pleasure to as well before and after the performance.
Following the show I attended a poker game at O’Neal’s on South 3rd just off of South Street. I’ve done OK at their twice-weekly tournament games, coming in 4th this time around. I was kinda rusty after being away from the game for awhile. This is just about the best Irish bar I’ve ever been to.
Afterward I strolled by Legendary Dobbs, hearing a band perform some raucous call-and-response, audible for about a block away. John & Britttany run the open mic there every Wednesday. Brittany told me the name of the band, something..Potato. Anyone know?Walked down East Passyunk to give you this look northeastward.

Friday at noon I will update the Chart tab with the 50 artists I ranked for the first quarter of airplay.
