In other news, the rent is due again, and I’m not sure how to pay it, the money doesn’t appear to be there. I did get into a better financial program with one utility and that is helping.

The annotated notes of this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: Empire Circus is the standout from this program. An alternative pop-rock band that splits time between Dublin and NYC, 2 of their band members were in Stand, which had airplay on RCB for a number of years.
 
RCB proper: The tradition continues as Persephone descends to the Underworld, and we transition from summer songs to the occasional autumnal ones. All songs in the first segment have been part of this tradition in some form, save Katie Barbato’s tune, lifted from the poetry of Edna. St. Vincent Millay. Pamela Wyn Shannon these days is in Wales, is a mom for the first time, and active in purely creative art, not so much music these days. Segment 2: Meghan Cary & New Sweden take part in this weekend’s Haverford (Havertown PA) Music Festival. Segment 3: More new blues music from Tommy Z, and some new life-affirming rock by Darius Lux. Segment 4: Tae Phoenix’s “I Loved You Then” is an absolute tearjerker. A few male figures are celebrated (von Grey, Joy Kills Sorrow). JKS, along with The Howlin’ Brothers and Amy Speace are among dozens of artists descending upon Nashville for the American Music Association Festival later this month. I couldn’t figure oue the liner notes in The Howlin’ Brothers album, but the songs are of the best quality in folk and roots. Speaking of liner notes, Amy Speace’s latest all contain various Shakespearean quotes, one for each song. Segment 5: Ben Bedford’s ode to a veteran judge is compelling, setting the scene in 1973, the ‘Wounded Knee incident’. Also aired a song from a new album by Midwestern folk talent Andrew Calhoun. He runs the indie label Waterbug. One of his other songs is Moon and Sea, which is the English translation of a song I did spin (ha!) by David Garlitz (based in Paris) right after.

The annotated notes of this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: For the first time in a few years we hear from Jodelle, who has a new EP, and a slightly different sound. She’s never been quite off my radar, as she’s backed up Deni Bonet on her new album as well as in concert. Patricia Vonne’s new album, rife with Tex-Mec flair is also a standout.
 
RCB proper: Back to ancient music I turned. Again, I linchpinned from the prior week’s opening segments to create something a bit less psychedelic, and rather more electronic and experimental. Can’t do much better than a song that’s something of a guilty pleasure. “Paranoimia” by Art of Noise features 80’s relic Max Headroom. The Orb continues to keep relevant here. I’m actually being followed by Kris Weston, aka Thrash, who was very active in the furthering of The Orb’s sound early in their history. Touching upon that history I spun something of their first album. Then bridged to India via the UK (Cornershop, Kula Shaker). Segment 2: 2 big festivals are just ahead, the Storyhill Fest and the Sisters (OR) Folk Festival Amy Speace will be active teaching as well as performing. I anchored her music alongside others who are performing. Notable here is Liz Longley, whose musicianship matches her full-length album’s production just perfecty. Beth Wood gives us a thoughful traveling folk song. Shinyribs (Ken Russell of The Gourds) is heard once again here as well. Segment 3 includes more new music from Jamie Kent. Most of the songs here are ballads, tho the pace quickens on a few including one the aforementioned Deni Bonet. Segment 3 includes songs from the heart (Loretta Hagen, Joy Mills, Jamie Kent). Segment 4 features new music from Too Slim & The Taildraggers, along with another new rockabilly tune from Ryan Cain And The Ables. Segment 5 includes artists that are taking part in the Campfire Festival, Club Passim, Cambride MA. FIrst airplay for Craig Greenberg is included. Final segment: 1 song from Switzerland, another hearkening to Brazil, a pair of intimate songs (DK & The Joy Machine, Vance Gilbert), then a few Americana tunes.

Radio Crystal Blue Top Segue for August 2013 (survey)

This is the first time I’m doing any sort of survey since the years I hosted an annual online airplay vote. I’m not sure I’ll do that sort of vote again, but I did come up with an idea that does warrant your participation. 

At the heart of Radio Crystal Blue are the different segments, often heard in degrees of loudness, with a certain connection between each song. It can be as simple as a lyric, a word, the time of the year, an instrument, or a few artists playing the same festival.  You can’t always pick it up just from a playlist. You have to listen to Radio Crystal Blue to really understand this.

To that end, I’ve created what I intend to be an online vote, allowing you to vote for the best 3-song segue from the 4 weeks of shows in August.   You get one vote between now and September 5, 1145pm ET.  Check out the songs, the artists, and the associated links.  I encourage you to listen to the songs, of course. I didn’t secure permission for audio clips, else I would have enclosed such clips in the survey ideally, that would be the best way to present this. But chalk it up to spontaneity. This is an idea I should have thought up sooner.
