Spring’s just about blooming all over, the space heater is mothballed, and my leather jacket is just about off for good, while the tshirts get their first proper laundering. Yeah, it’s warm out. Last night I was at The Legendary Dobbs to see Song Dogs & The Nightjar along with a few other bands on both floors. Read about the whole experience at my latest posting to https://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/03/23/legendary-dobbs-32212/
I might attend the Cape May Songwriters Festival next weekend. I don’t exactly know how to get there, being that I’m of the non-driver sort. Any ideas?
Next RCB shows will be the final ones counting toward my 1st Quarter Airplay rankings. Artists are ranked based on progressive amounts of airplay and exposure. Chart will update 4/1 or 4/2. Who’s on top right now? Have a look at the chart tab at www.radiocrystalblue.net

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.
On RCB Novus Ordo: The Dirty Names have swagger for days. If you like The Rolling Stones (of course you do), you will like this band that I debuted this week. Sons Of The Never Wrong return with more originals, all in a gospel flavor, while they celebrate 20 years of existence. Kirsten Opstad’s intricate songwriting also delights in this show; she’s performing here in Philly next week.

RCB proper:

Segment 1 contains new music by a band I’ve known close to 10 years called Yarn. I vaguely recall spinning music of theirs early in that time frame; now they are breaking big within the Americana rock genre. Spun a couple of tunes referencing the season (Joy Kills Sorrow, Hungrytown; the latter referencing a natural disaster from the 1800’s causing extremely long winters). Segment 2 saw me debut a new one from one of my fave UK acts, MJ Hibbett & The Validators. If twee-pop is your thing, and you crave comic book fiction, you will like their tale of space dinosaurs and apocalyptic matters. Hard to segue out of that one for sure, but segue I did with more songs with violins…leading into a jazz/blues thing (BD Lenz, Tom Principato for original instrumentals). Segment 3: Sharon Goldman is opening act for Sloan Wainwright at First Acoustics in downtown Brooklyn on 3/24. Cary Cooper and Tom Prasada Rao peform some house concert and at a Unity church in the next few days. Debuted the new CD by Peter Buzzelle. Segment 4 brought reflections on hard times and with war as the backdrop (Manisha Shahane, Vance Gilbert, Mare Wakefield), leading to songs about old lands and dreams (Jean Mann, Dan & Faith, Fred Gillen Jr.)

@ Legendary Dobbs 3/22/12

It was my first time to see acts play the 2nd floor of the Legendary Dobbs. It’s a modest room, new brick, a series of soft chairs lining one half of the room. A nice wide stage to hold maybe 7 comfortably. Opening act was Derrick, who performed solo acoustic. He has an insistent fingerpicking style, looking very much an artist of confidence and ease.  “I hadn’t picked up a guitar in a while, so I won’t be doing all the fancy stuff I normally do”.  Derrick fronts a local ‘suburban hip-hop’ act, akin to the Beastie Boys. Tonight there was no hip-hop; more like choice covers of standards along with a few originals, a handful of vocals.  He did a medley of songs with some easy guitar chords.  “All you need is the right chord progression…there’s the G, the D, the C…then you can take over the world” before he launched into some Beatles songs.    Derrick’s band I couldn’t find reference of on the Web…he wrote it on one of my business cards but I might have actually given that card out already. It happens.

I ordered a Stone IPA at the upstairs.  6.9% alcohol, quite woody, definitely not a lightweight.  I looked at the monitor displaying the main-stage action. It looked like a hard rock band, a 5-piece, including an electric violin. I stole away to check the band out in person.
The band is Just A Memory, from Syracuse.  They definitely have a symphonic-rock sort of sound, and truly alternative in sound and appearance. Lead singer is Joey DiMaggio, and the violinist is Leila Dean. She is the  wife of the frontman, Kevin Dean in Brand New Sin; the band was borrowing Brand New Sin‘s large van for the drive down from Syracuse.  This was their debut gig in the Illadelph. They’ll certainly be back, probably in 8-10 weeks, according to Leila. Also, timewise, they had about 20 minutes to load in, plug in and start their set. They play a two-night stand at one of the hotels in Atlantic City this weekend before heading back north.

Back up north I went to the 2nd floor, in time to see Song Dogs and The Nightjar .Tonight they were a 4-piece; Miriama O’Brien, their percussionist had given  birth to 8-lb. Uma Theresa O’Brien on Wednesday.  The band showed off great guitar chops and shared vocal duties in the 90-minute set. One song referenced lead singer Ryan McCloskey’s hometown school in “Buffalo Crossroads”. Another song told a rather dark story called “Holy Ghost And Run”.   This was one of the first gigs with a new drummer, Dan Cooper.  The band keeps their on-stage stance simple for the most part, leaving the majority of the flashy stuff to lead guitarist/harmonica Michael Southerton (he was on harmonica for one song as well).  One of their staples is the Neil Young/Crazy Horse cover “Cortez The Killer”.  They also covered “When The Levee Breaks” (Led Zep, of course). Their sound can be filed as being faithful to classic rock as well as a modern spin on roots rock. I’d love to see them on a bigger stage, with more room to rock and roll to. They had played such a place, North Star Bar, earlier in March.  Upcoming shows for them include NYC’s Trash Bar, along with local shows at The Grape Room and Kung Fu Necktie.

Among those in the audience were Janet Bressler, lead vocalist for ‘psycho-Celtic’ rock band Sylvia Platypus. They will be at The Grape Room on 4/19.

Firstly I was under the weather much of this week, tho am emerging from whatever is ailing me, and also learning a few things about responding to people, emotionally and otherwise. I promised and delivered music from a number of artists that appear this week and weekend at SXSW. An entire segment was created around Megan Slankard, who was performing on several showcases along with fellow songwriters based elsewhere around the US. After remarking that it was time I got off the grid in terms of live local music, my computer chose to follow suit for a brief while. Web issues are largely resolved, tho I’m likely to get the PC an upgrade in RAM and maybe an external hard drive. New monitor also. I also want to continue bolstering the RCB idea to more folks, tho it all comes down to realistic expectations re the finished product, along with how much time and $ to devote to it. I still seek a day job within reasonable commute time of Philly.

REVIEW: I was at El Bar on 3/10/12, seeing local bands of some renown, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. When I say ‘go off the grid’, I mean seeing bands/songwriters I’ve never heard, in a place I’ve never been to before. I recommend doing this once every few months. Have a look at what happened in my latest review at http://www.radiocrystalblue.net

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of my shows.

On RCB Novus Ordo: The smooth modern rock of Tom Fuller Band started this show. Spanking Charlene appears here with a song about a Brooklyn nabe (Steven Van Zandt in the producer’s chair). Secret Skwirl, a project borne out of remastered lost recordings and an unknown band is one to watch for. I’d love to see whether the guys behind that music will resurface. Wes Tucker & The Skillets with an album recorded live at Alene’s Grocery in NYC (you non-NYC denizens should know that Arlene’s Grocery is on the former site of a grocery). Folklore also debuts here with (classically) epic tales of dinosaurs, robots, apocalyptic matters (unless I’m confusing them with a certain UK band. Nah).

RCB proper: RCB tradition is for me to spin Iggy Pop’s “Caesar” and also some Celtic music. This year I reintroduced the music of Philly-area group RUNA. Avi Wisnia & Rachael Sage performed an SXSW event already this week, and Avi’s back to the East Coast touring as usual. Nice to have Remember September on the radar again here in segment 1. Segment 2 includes a brand new song by Schwervon!, a song recorded in Memphis. They are about to move to Kansas (and I feel like I’m among the last to know somehow). I’m used to MAKAR rocking out on earlier albums, tho I do like the groove on their new CD, which I spun from again. Remember September and Talking To Walls are playing a week-long music festival somewhere in NYC’s Upper East Side; my online notes don’t indicate who else is in the festival. TTW’s tune has bagpipes in it! My Pet Dragon shares billing with 3 Kisses and Manda Mosher at a Go Girls Music SXSW event on 3/17. As mentioned earlier, Megan Slankard’s appearing at various SXSW shows practically inspired a whole segment in itself. Again I spun from Jeff Campbell’s CD, the song he wrote with Megan. From there, we hear the lovely partnerships of Sproule/Curreri and Elkin/Schmidt, plus extra music from TX’s own Raina Rose (who’s now a mom), and a magnificent song from Rebecca Loebe, plus a new one from Sarah Blacker. Further segment includes some righteousness in song from Andrew McKnight and Sean Kershaw (listen for Pat Wictor on lap steel and vox). More SXSW love for Christina LaRocca and Casey Desmond. Carolann Solebello and Pat Wictor co-bill tonight (Friday) at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA.
