@ The Fire, 4/28/12

Saturday’s show at The Fire was put together by Steve Quaranta, on the occasion of his birthday. Steve fronts a new band Language Problem, who made their debut on this evening. Language Problem is a rock quartet with a unique styling of mixed measures, psychedelia, inventive instrumentation, and old audio clips between a few songs.
Claire on drums, Steve on keys and guitars, Mike on guitar, Brian on bass are from a collection of 8 former Philly bands.
They have a few songs already out in the various social media circles and are recording more.
Opening the showcase were Gemini Wolf,  the dual keyboard/programming action duo of Mikronesia and Pandar. The latter does the strong vox and the general keyboard action, the former gets spacey and does more of the programming bit. They occasionally have added extra instrumentation in their sound tho Saturday’s show was simply the duo.Through about 7 selections, their songs are barely danceable but brief grooves to them, much the way Bjork and various trip-hop acts have sounded in the past, definitely moody and a bit dark. Talking with Mikronesia (er, Michael McDermott), he says he had composed an opera of their material titled Pangaea, over 10 years in the making. Michael is active in various artist projects involving sound, art, production and music for film and dance. Gemini Wolf have performed in just about every small and large venue in Philadelphia, and a select few in New York and other cities worldwide.
They’re playing next on 5/11 in Brooklyn, at Moon-ii, “an open video workshop..”
“Has anyone seen the Jimi Hendrix biopic on TV?…….Don’t watch it…it was horrible.. But really, you must see it. It was hilarious”. Paraphrasing here Dave Cope’s opening line to the audience as headliners Fantasy Square Garden prepared to stir up the masses. Having played a January residency at this stage, the band was very comfortable in their performance on Saturday. FSG’s members are active in other bands and solo projects. All of their material is penned by Dave, and all are original, tho borrowed heavily from various styles of music such as 60’s girl groups/songwriters, 70’s country rock, 80’s new wave, and a few places in between. The crowd was large and were dancing for much of the set. They are the sort of band one could picture seeing on some variety TV programs from yesteryear. A guy named Ryan, a huge fan of FSG, took to the stage to sing lead for the encore. “Business Or Pleasure” was a favorite. “I’m business, she’s pleasure” uttered stylish frontperson Ali Wadsworth, gesturing to sister and co-lead vocalist Claire. Ali was part of such bands as Unlikely Cowboy and Goldiebox. Claire, like Ali, is a Berklee College of Music graduate and boasts credits that include Andrew Lipke, Good Old War, The Wadsworth Sisters, and more. The sisters took a minute to do a playful original birthday song for Steve.
Chatting with Dave afterward, he mentioned being in the midst of writing and preparing to record songs for his solo album and doing a house concert in NYC. Dave has written hundreds of songs and is the mastermind of Fantasy Square Garden, present on rhythm guitar.
Also part of the mix are bassist Demian Mason, guitarist Andy Keenan, and drummer Kevin Killen (Hezekiah Jones, Chris Bathgate, Jason Crigler).
The stage and performance room was strewn with balloons, party favors and the usual birthday trimmings.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about May 2 and will be available for the rest of the year.
Owing to schedule demands, I usually aim for noon Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter.
You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground
songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
as many as 8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each
artist.
*********************************************************************************
Firstly, I must acknowledge the death of a radio hero, Pete Fornatale, who was one of several inspirations for Radio Crystal Blue many years ago. My condolences are posted elsewhere on the Web. I hope that I can make as much of an impact in people’s lives as he did. I will have a dedicated audio segment focusing on his influence at some point in the next show.
Apart from from learning about music (and radio) from Pete’s example, news came down that Kiss-FM, an R&B/hip-hop programmed station in NYC is also biting the dust, with sports programming taking over.   I have good memories of hearing music in the mid-80’s on this station. It will be missed.  I don’t mind sports programming, so long as it’s sports itself and not so much sports talk.  Still, one more station without music programming takes away more memories from all of us (not to mention royalties).

Fandalism is an invite-only social media website that’s just appeared on the greater Web radar. I’ve just joined tho I’m not exactly certain of its goal outside of friending/following/liking. Initially I see a lot of musicians and producers worldwide, not just the US contingent. http://www.fandalism/radiocblue

The Discussion group is kinda dormant.  Feel free to discuss RCB at http://www.facebook.com/groups/273953255983866/

I’m planning to go to a showcase at The Fire on Saturday. I don’t know any of the artists. That’s the point. I come to be educated and entertained.  I’ll have some pics of the event next week.  I go to about 3-4 shows a month to do photos/video.
I haven’t had interview requests in a while but I wouldn’t mind doing a few.  I do have to upgrade my recorder tho.
My computer is flying strong, tho it still has some issues with audio quality.  I’m pretty confident it’s recording in stereo but my recording software seems to think it’s mono. It could well be the mixer I’m using. For you gearheads, I have a Behringer Eurorack UB802. It might need to be replaced. Anyone with ideas on this?

A simple question for you to answer: What does Radio Crystal Blue mean to you?

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Songwriter-activist Lara Herscovitch returns with a new album. Some of the songs focus on the prison population in the US. Arthur Nasson has a new exuberant album that’s all over the musical map.   Adler & Hearne’s new album was recorded at Eddie’s Attic in GA.  Ronstadt Generations are 2 generations of musicians. Michael J. is Linda’s brother; he is joined by sons Michael G. and Petie on the CD “Lulo”, full of music inspired by life experience in the Southwest across 5 generations.

RCB proper: With the passing of Levon Helm of The Band, I memorialized him with 2 songs to kick off this show.  First was Professor Louie and The Crowmatix, whose history is well intertwined with The Band’s. “Restless Islands” features Levon on mandolin.   “Life Is A Carnival” is also covered by The Crowmatix, tho I opted to spin the original here.    the matthew show recorded a song at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis back in February, and this kicks off segment 1. Following this up was a song similar in rhythm and vibe by Deborah Lombardi. She and Josh Joffen performed at a new venue, 89 North, in Patchogue (LI), NY last night.  How about two songs with tuba? Jim Boggia and Tracy Bonham feature this instrument. Both appear at Rockwood Music Hall (NYC) on 4/30.  Within segment 2: My Pet Dragon and Levee Drivers are part of the Launch Music Festival in Lancaster PA tonight. Segment 3: Spun from the new album by DC’s Karen Collins & The Backroads Band, then following up with other Americana/folk groups. Segment 4 began with some statements about American life (Aztec Two-Step, Vance Gilbert).
