PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about June 19 and will be available for about 1 year. I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 8 songs, one each from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you some backstory of each.

5 YEARS AGO: This week, all those years ago, I debuted the following artusts:The Kennedys, Tam Lin, Anders Holst, and Afterdawn. On RCB proper: Did focused features on Jann Klose and Pharaoh’s Daughter. Others included in this show were Adam Levy, Jaymay, The Boroughs, The May Fire, Tracy Jane Comer, and The Two Man Gentlemen Band. I type this and wonder out loud why I don’t have active archives from this year. I did preserve a few whole shows on CD. Now, if I can only find them!

I’ve already spoken publicly on the derecho that invaded PA and tore up parts of the Ohio Valley. When I saw that the storm would persist for close to a full day and other options weren’t close to travel to for safety or financially viable, AND the fact that Philly doesn’t appear to have shelters for such a purpose unlike other places, I chose to leave until the threatened derecho passed. From what I’ve read, the storm was indeed tougher on my area than NYC itself. During my stay I met songwriter Daniel Goodman for the first time. Together we enjoyed a buffet Indian lunch and I received something of a tour of one sector of the Garment District.
***
If you’ve ever enjoyed the game of ‘count-the-jellies-in-a-jar’ as I did as a youngster, you’ll like this game I made up: Guess the amount of shows, songs, and hours I’ve recorded for Radio Crystal Blue from earliest playlist records (mid-2001) to the present. If you need a hint, go to my Yahoo!Groups page, where I’ve preserved all those old records. The thing is, I’ve yet to fully count myself, so we’ll learn something new together. No, there is no prize. If you guess closest, give yourself a prize!
********
RCB Novus Ordo: HuDost returns to my airwaves with a more acoustic-folk affair this time around, and just one original song on the album at that. The song I spun included cameos from 2 songwriters who wrote the original. Mugga, a prog-psych (psych-prog?) band from Madrid is debuted. Cold Satellite releases their second album; this is the latest effort from songwriter Jeffrey Foucault along with Lisa Olstein. James Durst exemplifies world music; I included a 500+-year-old Viatnamese song in the mix.
RCB proper: More summer songs to start the show include longtime RCB staples by Tangerine Dream and Martha & The Muffins. The Bollywood tune at the beginning remains among my favorite compositions of the genre; I believe it’s actually a wedding song. 808 State’s ex:el album was an touchstone for my early adulthood; the album’s got cameos from Bernard Sumner and Bjork. The piece “Lift” easily fits between the sounds of South India and good ‘ol German engineering. Segment 2: Spun music of a few artists performing at Make Music Harvard Square on 6/22. Segment 3: Debuted the new album from Karyn Oliver, giving the album (and my segment) something of a longing, summer feel. Segment 4 generally rocked out, tho I began with the debut of a new album from songwriter Alan Semerdjian. Segment 5: Cary Cooper and Talia Segal are finalists in the upcoming Telluride Troubador Competition. And we hear another song from Cary’s new album. The YaYa’s share billing across their calendar with Sharon Goldman and Allison Scola(6/21 in lovely downtown Metuchen NJ..I know..I’ve been there), and are touring with Honor Finnegan (6/15, 6/25, 7/5). Final segment: Lynn Hollyfield shared billing on 6/12 with Carey Creed (and spun a track from Carey’s with Lynn as a contributing backing vocalist).

Late programming/publishing this week

With my life suddenly in upheaval between bills, job interviews, and a derecho which is headed in my path, and this week’s show still not full programmed or published, I’m estimating that it will first publish on Friday.  I am seeking shelter away from home all day Thursday.

I’ve told the story elsewhere about why it’s late. All I’ll type here is that life frequently intervenes, and I’m allowing this to flow through while I wait out the storm.     You have my apologies in advance. I hope to regularly publish shows on Wednesday again starting with the next one.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 10 songs, one each from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you some backstory of each.

5 YEARS AGO: back into the Wayback I had aired music from these notable artists 5 years ago this week: Dan Bern, The Feverfew, Imaginary Johnny, Telling On Trixie, The States, Philpot, 3 Kisses, Luke Sneyd, Too Loons For Tea, and Martha Redbone. Devoted features were aired for Devon Sproule and Holly O’Reilly. In that week’s RCB Novus Ordo, debut airplay was granted to artists such as The Revelons, The Dollyrots, I Am The Heat, and Lucibel Crater. Do any of these artists resonate with you? They do, for me.

Stats for the month of May fell this way: A very slight downtick in terms of eyeballs to the website but typically there’s been a slowdown in the warmer months. The posts relevant to the podcasts have remained most popular, alongside the home and archive pages. No reviews were done in the last month. Not sure I’ll do any in June just yet. Outside of the US: Canada, Sweden, the UK and Italy have viewed my site the most.

RCB Novus Ordo: The Trailerpark Idlers from Stockholm present a unique alt-country sound. We hear from The Stereofidelics, who have released their latest CD. Best promo item of the year I’ve received (and I get my fair share) are the 3-D glasses. They are provided so that you can read the lyrics within the liner notes. Lengendary bluesman Hans Theessink is heard once again, along with Lisa Biales who presents another assortment of old and new blues. I also spun a fan favorite that appears on Jill Cagney’s newest EP.
RCB proper: Initial segment includes some of my favorite summer tunes. Dick Dale remains a staple for me. Listen to that guitar plank! Related bands The Pixies and The Breeders also give some summer/surf guitar sounds here, plus a classic from Midnight Oil. Rob Morsberger passed away this week. I had met him briefly during the time he was gigging with Jon Herington. I dug up Jon’s 2000 album “Like So” which I spun for you back in 2002. This was in the year before Jon had joined Steely Dan’s band on guitar. Rob is heard on piano on the title track. Segment 2: West Coast songwriter superstars Pi Jacobs & Garrison Starr share billing at The Sculpterra Winery, Paso Robles CA on 6/9. I went with two songs that contained a very similar downbeat (Meghan Cary, Daphne Lee Martin). Segment 3: Veteran songwriter Larry Wayne Clark also passed away this week. He co-wrote a song with Shane Guse, he of The Western Swing Authority, and I did spin “I’ve Got A Feeling”. Brand new music in this segment by Amateur Blonde. Segment 4: More brand new music here by Austin’s own Randy Stern, and also more from Ronnie Fauss’s new album. Gallon House has ended their work as a duo, and are becoming two solo acts. Their final show is on June 7 at Seven Brides Brewing, Silverton, OR. Final segment: Greg Klyma is included with what I believe is a Polish traditional song (“Dziadek I Babcia” would appear to translate into English as ‘granddad and granddad’. Is this so?). Also aired another tune from Stephen Lee Rich’s latest.
