THE ALTERNATE ROOT:
I’m proud to announce here that I’m joining the folks at The Alternate Root. I am assisting with advertising sales for the top music magazine devoted to American Roots, both worldwide and in the Internet world. At the heart of my own choices of genre (and I like just about all of them), some of my favorites do comes from Americana, roots, alternative-country, and close-knit sound-alikes to these. Sounds that should, and do, feel familiar, fresh, broken-in like your favorite pair of jeans or boots.
The Alternate Root operates a weekly magazine in print and online, along with a weekly airplay chart, a TV program that reaches millions nationwide along with its presence on the website, and of course, the latest in newly released material. In fact, this week the website lists their top 35 artists based in East Nashville.
As a reporting station to their Roots 66 Airplay Chart, I’m well-versed in knowing who are new and breaking to their radar, and some of that info translates to Radio Crystal Blue. Building upon this knowledge and with my years of experience doing radio and connecting with industry people over time, this alignment is a new and important step in my professional growth. There are a number of areas The Alternate Root provide for advertising and I’m happy to shed more light on this if you are willing to inquire. http://www.thealternateroot.com

RCB Novus Ordo: There’s a good buzz here in Philly about indie-pop rockers Looseleaf Trio, whom debut here. Fallen Riviera also debuts; they were first heard about a year ago on this program. Scranton, PA’s Silhouette Lies have a post-hardcore rock thing going on which I’ve seen in person and I’m now a convert. I was thoroughly impressed by the musicianship and production from Steph Barrak. Her music is easily the best I’ve spun from this program.

RCB proper: It was several years ago that my usage of music from the Grassy Hill New Folk Competition, part of the long-running Kerrville Folk Festival, served as the prototype for airplay features. I would spin the music of whichever finalists I had music of (or permission at least to spin of at least). From here I expanded to doing likewise with full showcase events and similar festivals. The idea was simply to be more inclusive of those who were not in direct focus for my airplay but who happened to share billing for an event or a festival or similar circumstances. This year, 7 finalists at Kerrville were aired on this week’s podcast. Also here I aired Pat Wictor’s ode to the campfire experience at Kerrville. In the opening segment, I included 2 short pieces with the now late keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and iconic Beat poet Michael McClure. From here, naturally, a Doors song came to mind..and then a gently intro to summer, saluting graduates and the sun alike (a well-produced piece by Baz Luhrmann, and NYC underground rockers Heth & Jed). Segment 3: Spuyten Duyvil & Bobtown share billing at Urban H2O in Yonkers NY on June 8. James Hearne, who fronts Philly’s own The Way Home takes a solo turn with an absolutely new song. Segment 4: Jo Wymer & Danielle Miraglia bring the blues in this one. Both songwriters are at the FMCU Coffee Beanery on June 8 in Media, PA. You also get to hear more new music from Polarcode, making bigger splashes in the Midwest. Segment 5: More featured performers at Kerrville in focus here, including brand new music from the almighty Amy Speace. Her songs on the album “How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat” are prefaced in the liner notes with Shakespearean references (“Hesitate” which I spun, aligns with the end of “Romeo & Juliet”. Listen and figure why) plus a fun tune from The Sweetback Sisters, and a rather engaging song from Nels Andrews (who really should be aired more often). Segment 6: Mary Gauthier. What more to say? This: Debut of a new album, her first live album at that, and twinned here with The Steel Wheels, who have a new album and a good late spring song. Both perform at Roots On The River, Bellows Falls, VT on 6/9. Final segment presents a new version of the matthew show’s “Bring Me Safely Down”, along with brand new music by Craig Sonnenfeld. The songs in this segment hope more than anything else. Closed out with Heather Pierson’s piano composition, as she reflects on the Midwest weather.

IDEALISTIC SPORT aired music from these artists this past week: Annie Wenz, Theopolis James, Song Dogs and Fellaheen. I’m continuing to seek music that would befit a sports theme or otherwise be something upbeat to fill in the time, so as not to make the show a sermonette.

Dan herman on music genres

Earlier in 2012 in several of my weekly missives steering my audience to news of the show, I openly mused on several genres of music.  I sought to clarify my own definitions of music after musing on this long enough.  So I took fingers to keyboard and added some that came to mind right away.  I’ve added a few since then.  I hadn’t dwelt on these commentaries since.
Fast forward to September, and I had heard from Beth DeSombre on Facebook, who cited that she was not to appear in a local (Massachusetts) folk blog, because she was ‘not folk enough’.  I gave my sympathy and also provided my homespun definition, which she later declared “What a fantastic definition, of folk, Dan! It’s perfect!’

Beth furthered spelled out her own definition of folk here.

I, in turn now share my definition of folk with you, followed by my further thoughts on other genres and expressions:

FOLK is old-style journalism and editorializing. Folk tells stories of what
goes on down-home, across the hall or across picket fences to the neighbors.
Folk comments on politics. Sometimes it even politicks. Folks presents a sense
of community, at once urban, rural, and metaphorical. We can relate to the
music. We can relate to the songwriter. It is our kin, our kinfolk, as it were.
Relatedness. Get it? Listen to storytellers in song like Danny Schmidt as a good
example.

ROOTS music is about our yearning and search for one’s security, one’s roots,
one’s place in one’s heart, one’s earth, one’s universe, as well as one’s
community as with folk. Roots takes us back in time; it doesn’t preach
necessarily. There is a time warp, a reminder of days gone by, as you might have possibly remembered it, or even imagined it. The first roots albums were in a comparative way, roots rock, such as Creedence Clearwater Revival’s take on rockabilly. or Dylan’s ‘Blonde On Blonde’. For an indie comparison, how about Kathleen Edwards, or Mark McKay? And how do we explain Spuyten Duyvil, with those old-time instruments and a youthful spirit making songs fit for the urban landscape? Or The Defibulators, who go steps further and brand something totally their own?

AMERICANA appears to be something that’s not necessarily in the pop category.
Akin to folk, it’s about realism, and not always positive realism. The songs
contain innate meanings of what today’s America is like. Would the songs suggest meanings relevant to the days of yesteryear, they would be called ‘roots’.
Americana differs from roots for its modernism. Remember, there is still the
Great American Songbook, all those jazz standards and easy listening songs out there. That’s not Americana, just a different interpretation. Americana
resembles roots and country and pretty much anything that are not on the major (Billboard, etc.) radio/sales charts. Suggested artists: Mark McKay, Larry McMurtryAndrew McKnightMark Erelli

INDIE…as in ‘independent’. Indie is anything that has the backing of an
indie label, or otherwise is more of a DIY approach. Indie types might have
their own vanity label and studio.  Schwervon! comes to mind as a great success story.

ALTERNATIVE: Alternative to what? Alternative to the majors, Billboard, and
the like. That’s about it, really. There’s no ‘alt’ sound, just the level
of exposure that’s given. An artist can be both indie and alternative but
once one flirts with a major or is on the charts, there goes the alternative
cred.
UNDERGROUND firmly suggests what you think it is..bands and songwriters who are generally unsigned, performing in venues that don’t advertise very much and generally doesn’t have the name recognition as their alternative peers, much less your true household-name types.
