NEXT SHOW will be published on or about November 21 and will be available
for about 1 year. Remember, even if you miss hearing a show the week I
record, you can always find it within the FeedPlayer’s archive of older
shows. Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from
8 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each artist.

PROGRAMMING NOTE:
On the next show I will conclude the debut airing of a Nanci Griffith tribute album
released by Huntington NY label Paradiddle Records. Titled “Trouble In The
Fields: An Artists’ Tribute To Nanci Griffith”, it contains music from
artists you’ve heard on my show plus others of their caliber. The album also
contains a narrative by Pete Kennedy. Profits from the sales of this album
benefit Mines Advisory Group. More about this album at:
www.paradiddlemusic.com www.maginternational.org

I already have another concept CD that will debut on the show after next, which is the week of 11/25.

Also for the 11/18 experience, I’m briefly reviving the New Music Sampler segment, to give airplay to artists that have been on my waiting list the longest. It will be like RCB Novus Ordo tho in a smaller, even friendlier form.

HOLIDAY music is now being accepted for airplay, both in digital and hard
copy (preferred) for Radio Crystal Blue’s final show of the year, dated for
the week of 12/16. Anything appropo for the time of the year (doesn’t have
to be Christmas!!) from indie/underground/DIY/touring artists will be
considered.

I’m still pretty excited about working in new media and getting to work on projects that will be insightful and fun for Philly residents to view. I am a few ideas in mind, and yet there isn’t much I really can do until I take a few more courses and have a crew ready to assist. No clue when more classes from the public-access network will be ready yet.

COVERAGE: 3-4 times a month I go out to Philly-area gigs to do photos, some
video, and a write-up on my website afterward. I do this for free, tho at
some point in the future I might want to barter this work or be simply paid.

I was at a showcase at Philly’s Kung Fu Necktie on Sunday 11/12.

NEXT shows I’m covering:
11/23: @ M-Room, Philly: Grown Up Avenger Stuff, Lori Citro among 5 female-fronted bands in a GoGirlsMusic event, with proceeds to benefit Philabundance and Wreaths Across America www.grownupavengerstuff.com www.gogirlsmusic.com

I’m looking for at least 2 more events to cover in December in or around the Philadelphia metro area.

Outside of radio for a moment. I received a note from Nina Gray, who manages the folk-rock duo-led band of Buskin and Batteau. Nina received a phone message from Bethany Yarrow (daughter of Peter), who runs The Action Center in Far Rockaway, NY. Bethany reported on the living conditions of families in the area, and about The Action Center’s place in the community. It truly exists to help bring more creativity and postiveness to the area. Bethany says it’s the only place in the area that is acting as a supply distribution center. Soon it will also be a warming center. You can contribute to The Action Center at www.theactioncenter.com Nina’s full note on Facebook is here: http://www.facebook.com/notes/nina-gray/hurricane-sandy-aftermath-what-bethany-yarrow-is-doing-how-you-can-help-with-tha/10152271993140788

RCB REVIEW from this week’s shows:
RCB Novus Ordo: Among the notable, you’ll hear new music from Philadelphia’s pre-eminent Celtic-folk ensemble RUNA to start off, along with transgender songwriter-activist Ryan Cassata, and Paris-based Matthias Strum.
RCB proper: Segment 1: Loretta Hagen & Danielle Miraglia share billing on 11/17 in Macungie, PA (had to look that one up). Spun more new music from Sarah Blacker and Darlingside in this segment too. These artists already performed at the Red Door in Portsmouth NH on 11/12. Segment 2 includes brand new music from solid alternative rock band Mercury Morning. The original Red Molly trio are heard in this week’s listen to “Trouble In The Fields”, the Nanci Griffith tribute album I’ve aired the last several weeks. Segment 3 contained a rather depressive vibe sorts. Lorraine Leckie released new CD with co-conspirator Anthony Haden-Guest this week. I can only imagine what celebrity LL was referencing in the song I spun. Elaine Romanelli & Anna Dagmar to share billing at a house concert in Franklin NY on 11/18. Final segment: Along with Stevie Coyle’s “Penny Wishes” was a tiny preamble containing some banter from a carny advertising cojoined twins. You’d have to hear it, I suppose. I also segued Lara Herscovitch’s “From A Bridge” (inspired by the Grand Canyon) with Heather Pierson’s meditative piano instrumental, referencing her birthplace of Joplin, MO.

RCB REVIEW:

RCB Novus Ordo: David Leinweber returns to my airwaves with his latest acoustic album. Award-winning songwriter Lee Feldman is present here with his 4th album. Kati Mac, whom I had interviewed maybe 5 years ago, returns with her latest. You can hear Rob Morsberger on piano and backing vox on “Highway 100″. Rob himself is releasing 2 new albums very shortly and is fighting cancer.I had last met him about 10 years ago supporting Jon Herington.RCB proper: In mid-August I always start with The Velvet Underground’s “The Gift”. Out of this tragicomic piece I always seem to take different directions. This year, having absorbed some history on Serge Gainsbourg, I spun the opener to his 1971 concept album re Melody Nelson. From that lovely pastiche of symphonic rock and spoken word (aha), we go to the spoken word intro and the psychedelics of The Small Faces, then some early Eno, and then the Madchester scene circa 1991 with a long danceable jam from Saint Etienne. Segment 1 following: Two NYC songwriters beginning this one (Bryan Dunn, John Brodeur), then some soft songs through the rest of this segment. Segment 2 begins with MJ Hibbett & The Validators’ concept album Dinosaur Planet. Followed up with live songs by The StereoFidelics and Sirsy. This weekend starts the first ever Liberty Music Festival, centered around The Legendary Dobbs here in Philly, with 74 artists performing. I spun 5 of those artists in one dedicated segment. My favorites are the ones from Venice Sunlight and The Way Home, both with classic pop-rock leanings. Late Cambrian is heard once again here with a great electronic-fueled song that should be in the clubs. All three with songs that remain in my head for days. Beyond this, spun another from The Timid Roosevelts, who are just about to release their new CD. Segment 4: Greg Klyma shares billing with Danielle Miraglia at The Burren in Somerville, MA. You can hear Greg back up Danielle on “See The Light” which I spun following Greg’s tune. Greg, along with Kate Klim and Meg Braun, perform at the upcoming Cutting Edge Of The Campire Festival at Passim, in Cambridge MA. Of course, I spin Meg’s tune “August” here. On the same weekend as the festival in Cambridge is the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival, as I spun music by 4 artists who are part of the lineup (Cary Cooper, Raina Rose, Anna Dagmar, Brother Sun). Closed with Heather Pierson’s summer romance song, plus a Philly subway romance song by Vance Gilbert, and an instrumental from Bolton MA’s Dan & Faith.

@ The Grape Room 4/19/12

Thursday was a day built for theatrics at The Grape Room. All the artists in this showcase had some sort of visual art going on, often leaning toward non-traditional methods of dance and performance.Opening act was local solo acoustic act boog. boog presents music with gruff voice and rough timed measures of words and chords. Gutteral acoustic blues is his fare. He was dressed virtually all in black including sunglasses, fancying himself quite cool. I enjoyed the latter two songs of his set which happened to be older tunes (these appear on his 2010 album “The Walking Club”). He’s firmly entrenched in the Philly scene and plans to do more shows in the Northeast.

Sylvia Platypus bill themselves as ‘psycho-Celtic’ rock. They are a solid six-piece with something for just about everyone. Not at all a quiet bunch, tho lead singer Janet Bressler presents a quiet power on stage, inwardly led to dancing, arms outstretched at just about any time in the set. She took her act to the audience in the first song, and performed a mock collapse during a closing medley of songs. The band includes Ruchama on bass, a well-hidden Rosalba on drums, Charlie on loud bagpipes, Bill on lead guitar, and Michael Southerton (Song Dogs & The Nightjar) with rhythm guitar. Good live show, very good groove if you dig psychedelic sounds.

VIDEO of Sylvia Platypus: http://youtu.be/P96I_yVv0lY
The latter three bands on the set have been touring together. First were The Unholy Sideshow. They are just that, unholy and a sideshow, with music piped in on keyboard and piano by someone. There was a large metal apparatus installed in stage and the devilishly half-naked emcee who performed a dozen death-defying sideshow feats including hammering metal into his nose, gettting into and out of several animal traps (including fox and bear ones), and presented an assistant, Davy Danger, clad in leather and lace. Davy Danger did an exciting Houdiniesque upside-down straitjacket escape from said apparatus, and assisted with several other tried-and-true items like the bed of nails, sledgehammering a cinder block off the emcee. A few volunteers from the audience assisted in the closing act, where their donation of various dollars would earn them staple gun clips on various parts of the emcee’s body. Offers of $100 weren’t made but they would have been directed toward the privates. Great alternative to the usual tipjar passing, eh?
Mister Joe Black, from UK, performed seemingly authentic German cabaret, both solo on keyboard, and fronting a good band. He covered Britney Spears and The Weather Girls (you know, ‘that’ song) and included a few originals with such velvet-gloved, hat-in-hand forcefullness, complete with double- and triple- entendres). Pretty much everyone in the audience had visible grins on their faces, especially after enduring the sideshow antics on stage prior.

This Way To The Egress take their name from a P.T. Barnum slogan, have a great merch table, and provide cabaret, burlesque, and gypsy-punk sounds. They shared band members with Mister Joe Black, notably the fetching Rachel Galassi on keys and violin.

I stayed for the first few tunes, having to catch the last train out of Manayunk, if not the last bus. I also had enough time to get a customary meal at Frak’s. Their ‘Manayunk Fries” with cheese and bacon, is quite literally to die for, and at a great value for the portion size. No, the fries aren’t camera shy. I was just that much hungry.
