PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about June 12 and will be available for about 1 year. I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon as possible thereafter. You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 10 songs, one each from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you some backstory of each.

5 YEARS AGO: back into the Wayback I had aired music from these notable artists 5 years ago this week: Dan Bern, The Feverfew, Imaginary Johnny, Telling On Trixie, The States, Philpot, 3 Kisses, Luke Sneyd, Too Loons For Tea, and Martha Redbone. Devoted features were aired for Devon Sproule and Holly O’Reilly. In that week’s RCB Novus Ordo, debut airplay was granted to artists such as The Revelons, The Dollyrots, I Am The Heat, and Lucibel Crater. Do any of these artists resonate with you? They do, for me.
***
Stats for the month of May fell this way: A very slight downtick in terms of eyeballs to the website but typically there’s been a slowdown in the warmer months. The posts relevant to the podcasts have remained most popular, alongside the home and archive pages. No reviews were done in the last month. Not sure I’ll do any in June just yet. Outside of the US: Canada, Sweden, the UK and Italy have viewed my site the most.

RCB Novus Ordo: The Trailerpark Idlers from Stockholm present a unique alt-country sound. We hear from The Stereofidelics, who have released their latest CD. Best promo item of the year I’ve received (and I get my fair share) are the 3-D glasses. They are provided so that you can read the lyrics within the liner notes. Lengendary bluesman Hans Theessink is heard once again, along with Lisa Biales who presents another assortment of old and new blues. I also spun a fan favorite that appears on Jill Cagney’s newest EP.
RCB proper: Initial segment includes some of my favorite summer tunes. Dick Dale remains a staple for me. Listen to that guitar plank! Related bands The Pixies and The Breeders also give some summer/surf guitar sounds here, plus a classic from Midnight Oil. Rob Morsberger passed away this week. I had met him briefly during the time he was gigging with Jon Herington. I dug up Jon’s 2000 album “Like So” which I spun for you back in 2002. This was in the year before Jon had joined Steely Dan’s band on guitar. Rob is heard on piano on the title track. Segment 2: West Coast songwriter superstars Pi Jacobs & Garrison Starr share billing at The Sculpterra Winery, Paso Robles CA on 6/9. I went with two songs that contained a very similar downbeat (Meghan Cary, Daphne Lee Martin). Segment 3: Veteran songwriter Larry Wayne Clark also passed away this week. He co-wrote a song with Shane Guse, he of The Western Swing Authority, and I did spin “I’ve Got A Feeling”. Brand new music in this segment by Amateur Blonde. Segment 4: More brand new music here by Austin’s own Randy Stern, and also more from Ronnie Fauss’s new album. Gallon House has ended their work as a duo, and are becoming two solo acts. Their final show is on June 7 at Seven Brides Brewing, Silverton, OR. Final segment: Greg Klyma is included with what I believe is a Polish traditional song (“Dziadek I Babcia” would appear to translate into English as ‘granddad and granddad’. Is this so?). Also aired another tune from Stephen Lee Rich’s latest.

NEXT SHOW will be published on or about July 25 and will be available for
the rest of the year.
Owing to schedule demands, I usually publish on Wednesdays or as soon
as

You will hear music in several segments of top indie/DIY/underground
songwriters and bands.
RCB Novus Ordo will also air separately. On this show I spin one song from 6 songs in one sitting and give you background info of each
artist.

In the prior week I had promised a review of a showcase I attended at The Fire, which included music by At Sea. Here’s a link to the review:

I’ve agreed to take part in Ariel Publicity’s 6th Digital Press Conference, scheduled for July 31. I’ll be remotely attending via Skype and interviewing some of their clients. The audio of the interview will be made available once everything is cleared. More about this event at www.arielpublicity.com
WIKI: I’d like to see Radio Crystal Blue grow its online presence with more of a Wiki presence. Some of you know that I have a YahooGroup attached to the show. www.groups.yahoo.com/group/radiocrystalblue Back in 2001 I built this to foster conversation and interest in the show. Lately I’ve become the only one contributing and posting archives of older shows. You can see every show with a playlist on here going back to 2001, just when I started to spin indie/underground songs. This actually predates the time I was really immersed in the music scene in NYC. I’d like to take all the info and make some use of it for my own website. You might wonder who got airplay in a particular show, or what segments held a specific genre, theme, an so forth. What would you like to see? I’ll take suggestions on how to build and grow this presence.

WORK: I’m seeking a day job in the areas of support/admin/clerical/research,
within a 15 mile radius of Philadelphia. Contact me if you know of a job
that befits my requirements.

RCB REVIEW:
RCB Novus Ordo: Jenee Halstead returns to the RCB airwaves with a new album, and with songs that were written just prior to recording the album. Rock band Friction Land arise out of the ashes of the band Friction. Foolish Ida is a project by Sarah Rabdau, memorializing a Maurice Sendak character in a song cycle. During the show I read the letter that she composed to Maurice, a letter she never got to send, as the author passed away just prior to the CD release event. Spun music of 2 artists who are pillars of the indie/underground/DIY music scene in Philly: Griz (Chris Grunwald), and Reverend TJ McGlinchey.
RCB proper: I dug out another CD from the long-defunct huH music service, and a great ambient-techno tune by Future Sound Of London. A lot of segments this week. Two segments contained music by artists performing as part of the Huntington (NY) Folk Festival. The 2nd of these 2 segments featured artists who have some connection to each other, mainly in appearing on each other’s recordings. Also receiving airplay were artists who are part of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Emerging Artist Showcase. Segment 1 features more music from Justin Levinson & The Valcours. Segment 2 of the standard segments includes Ratham Stone, who have recently changed band personnel. My Pet Dragon and Lisa Bianco share billing at NYC’s City Winery in August. Wormburner’s song “Some Summer’ is a good seasonal song. Segment 3: Mark Erelli & Eilen Jewell perform in NYC’s Stuyvesant Town on 7/21. Spun another new tune by Joy Mills (of The Starlings) and by Dan May. Segment 4 started with Anna Dagmar, Linq, and Beth DeSombre. Anna and Linq were part of a triple bill in MA 7/19. Anna and Beth are part of a songwriter showcase at The Burren Backroom, 7/22. Closed with another new song by Adler & Hearne, this from an album recorded at Eddie’s Attic in GA last year.

STATS. The home and archive pages of my main website are doing the best in terms of views. Not surprisingly, the posts reflecting the live show coverage are getting the most hits. So far, the show from 2/10 at The Grape Room has received the most hits, along with my Chart and Bio pages. In the running for photo of the year is my shot of The Tressels: http://radiocrystalblue.net/2012/02/12/the-grape-room-21012/2012_0211rcb0046/
Most of the viewers of my site are in North America, tho there is some love from 11 other countries including Malaysia!Radio Crystal Blue’s link appears on www.indieonthemove.com in the section listing National Radio Contacts! FANDALISM: www.fandalism.com/radiocblue Even tho I’m not a musician, I built a presence on the site to encourage conversation. I’ve started to give props to some regional artists as well as dialogue. I like the Facebook interaction through the site. Are you on Fandalism?
DREAM JOB?: It isn’t exactly radio. It’s more like film. I’ll never get away from radio, but I’m beginning to seriously explore the film industry, generally as freelance but also as a long-term career move. Next month I’m taking a class in this area, and we’ll see where it leads.TROUBLESHOOTING: One listener expressed some trouble accessing the show via an old Mac computer. Does anyone have suggestions on better listening to Radio Crystal Blue through a Mac?

In the area of handicapping, I’m exploring different variables to play, tho I only wager money now on the larger races in the year. In case you wondered, I did have the Kentucky Derby winner in advance, for the 2nd year in a row. I had selected I’ll Have Another in the 2nd of three Future Wager pools, and collected more for a win bet than those who waited until race day to bet him. I post almost weekly now to my blog on Tumblr about races and angles. The next feature will focus on Preakness Stakes Day before the big race next week. www.cblue456.tumblr.com for the rest of the story.
Currently on the WISH LIST:
A newer microphone and mixer for the show.

RCB REVIEW: The annotated version of the shows.
RCB Novus Ordo: Shupikai is NYC bluesman Bob Petrocelli’s instrumental group. New Riders Of The Purple Sage have resurfaced for a new album, out on Woodstock Records, the folks who bring you Professor Louie among others. Jim Allchin is known for his tenure at Microsoft as much as his role as a musician; I spun from his second solo album. Chip Taylor also receives airplay here. Chip is the composer of very famous songs made popular by Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Jimi Hendrix, and others. A great country/rock success story all his own. I spun the bonus track from his latest CD, which memorializes victims of a gunfire massacre last summer in Oslo and Utoya in Norway. Marc Berger’s album “Ride” celebrates his love of the American West. Listen for Eric “Roscoe” Ambel on backing vocals on the track I spun. The incredible Anais Mitchell is also part of this show as I aired a track from her new album, her first independently-released album, in fact.

RCB proper: Growing up in Brooklyn in the mid-80′s I fondly remember many a car radio blasting “Brass Monkey” tho I had little idea as to who were making that racket. Well I soon found out about the Beastie Boys and really took to the Check Your Head album all the way up through Hello Nasty, which I consider their magnum opus. Most people either love or hate Paul’s Boutique. I am not crazy about it but you can’t deny the beats they used. Meanwhile, I memorialized Adam Yauch spinning a few tracks from the group’s discography. Shambala features the chanting of Buddhist monks. I would close the show with “Namaste” off of Check Your Head, a moving tune with MCA on the mic. Segment 1: Sci-Fi Romance returns with a concept album about the John Henry legend. Stayed in a country/rock/jam/spirit vibe for the rest of this segment. The Kennedys, and Greg Smith & The Broken English performed at City Winery on May 8 for the release of the compilation “Occupy This Album” benefiting the Occupy movement. Segment 2: Spun another from the new album by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real, plus recently released music by Antigone Rising and Lisa Bianco. Both artists share billing at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ on May 11 (yikes, that’s tonight!). Segment 2 was mostly blues into rock, plus brand new music by Lisa Biales, sharing vocal duties with songwriter/producer EG Kight. Spun music of 4 songwriters who are performing at the Music In The Vineyard Festival, Belvidere NJ, May 19. Segment 4 kicks off with 2 very similar sounding songs by M’Balia and Roger Silverberg. Listening to the chords in the beginning. There were elements of bodies of water in just about all the songs. Carrie Elkin and Danny Schmidt continue to tour many shows, and their songs finish out this segment.
