PROGRAMMING:
NEXT SHOW will be published on or about April 17 and will be available
for about 1 year. You will hear music in several segments of top
indie/DIY/underground songwriters and bands.

RCB Novus Ordo is a separate podcast with 6-8 songs, one each from a brand new recording. I spin the music and give you the backstory of each artist.

*****
I don’t proclaim to have all of the best material from the best indie and underground artists. I might not have the best equipment. Despite these facts, here’s one more for you readers: My heart is in the right place. Radio Crystal Blue cannot exist without people who willfully support the show. I have no desire to be like the commercial stations, no matter how popular and marketed they are. I have enough desire to have the show grow and expand to something where it becomes your go-to for new music and a true sense of radio, in a format that belongs on the airwaves and in this era of podcasting. If I do not have or show that desire, this show fails to exist. That desire is still very strong, and I can only keep it going with those of you who give a damn.

I’ve decided on delaying the quarterly airplay chart until I have more time to devote it to. Nowadays I have much to do in my personal life that must get priority, including a job hunt, financial questions, and related.

****
PROGRAM UPDATE: I’m happy to report that I will debut a new compilation over the next 5 podcasts, including this week’s edition:
David Uosikkinen’s In The Pocket: Essential Songs Of Philadelphia: Sessions contains 10 songs, all from artists with strong Philly ties. Some amazing artists, including members of David’s own band The Hooters make appearances. The Hooters were one of several artists that helped to bring Philly’s own music scene to a national audience
****
I was at The Legendary Dobbs on Friday, April 11, up on the 2nd floor. Roger Silverberg, Larry Saklad and Brian Harmer did solo shows, and Brian’s wife Valentina Virgilio performed with 2 other guitarists, on a mix of covers and originals. In lieu of a review, I have these links for you:

SUBMISSION GUIDLINES
I focus on CDs as opposed to downloads, though I make exceptions in the event of albums that are digital releases only. Music must have a 2014 release date or not released otherwise before July 2013. All new albums debut on RCB Novus Ordo; on rare exception, some debut on Radio Crystal Blue proper.
I’m also interested in featuring, great compilation or soundtrack albums track-for-track, to help tell the story of those albums.

RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo: Fun raucous music from The Bloody Jug Band, right down to their stage names. Peter Mulvey returns with a new album, and I spun one tune that channels his inner rock-n’-roll start. Sharon Glassman is releasing a series of EPs with the concept revolving around characters in modern day Hoboken NJ. Sharon uses her creative faculties to the fullest, with experience as musician, and actor.

RCB proper: Robin Batteau last week announced his departure from the duo of Buskin and Batteau. I spun 3 songs from the duo’s last albums that he wrote. Segment 1 kept to a certain flow of songs that just, well, works starting with another new tune by Chase Gassaway. Segment 2: The Miners & The Morning River Band, two folk-rock bands in Philly, shared billing on April 12 in Pitman, NJ. Segment 3: Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Segerra, with her brand of American roots. Her album “Small Town Heroes” is largely ode to New Orleans, which she explored pre- and post-Katrina. Jennie Walker returns to my radar in this segment also. Segment 4 is sparse and acoustic. Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer, now a trio as they are parents to Rosemary, sing Child Ballad 1.

RCB REWIND:
RCB Novus Ordo: The Heart Pills debut once again, with a Wild West concept this time around. Sibling groupThe Iveys’s acoustic pop tunes are a delight. Charlie Parr with Alan Sparhawk produce an long instrumental acoustic track that closes this show. Charlie’s approach to recording eschews studios. Has to be heard to be believed.

RCB proper: Eulogized Frankie Knucles to open the show, a man who is one of the progenitors of what we call house music, straight outta Chicago, close cousin to Detroit techno and the New York scene itself. England got in on the music early too. We must remember R&B and Motown folding into the morphing disco sounds along with 60′s soul, and then this transition to house. Acid house too, which I believe came out of England, specifically Manchester (or Madchester). Geoffrey Armes from the UK, now in Berlin, did session work for Frankie Knuckles and so I spun one of his more uptempo works from the Hemisphere album. We also hear a favorite from 808 State that is similar to DJ Frankie Knuckles’ crossover hit “The Whistle Song”. Onward: Segment 1 starts with Davey O, whose bassist Jeffrey Mikulski, heard throughout the album, passed away in March. Brand new music from Amy Ray, one half of The Indigo Girls. Amy explores something of an upfront country concept on her latest solo album. Flo Anito, Avi Wisnia, and Wes Tucker & The Skillets all take part in this year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival in DC. Segment 2: Common thread here were songs with horns as a main ingredient, er, instrument (Professor Louie, Remember September, Eilen Jewell, Shakeh). Segment 3: I featured artists who performed at the NERFA One Day Conference, Chatham NJ on 4/5. We hear brand new music from Scott Wolfson & Other Heroes, and another from the sterling album Shimmer, by Lindsay May. Segment 4 kept things light and folky, outside of the closing song by Switchback, with a live version of a song-in-progress.
